PC Engine Version Translation

Post by Marc »

Junker HQ.net is pleased to announce it is beginning a project to create an English language patch for the PC Engine version of Hideo Kojima's Snatcher. The translation will consist of transplanting the English text from the Sega CD version to the PC Engine version, with additional original translation of deleted scenes and lines as necessary. Transcriptions of the dialogue sequences will be available online, as the game does not allow for the inclusion of accompanying subtitles. Translations of both instruction manuals will also be provided.

The PC Engine version contains numerous differences from the Sega CD version, such as:

- Japanese voice-overs directed by Hideo Kojima.
- The last version of the game to be overseen by Hideo Kojima.
- Several scenes deleted from the Sega CD version, and original versions of scenes censored in the Sega CD version.
- Additional uncensored dialogue.
- Higher on-screen color display.
- Music not present in the Sega CD version.

At this time, we are looking for a person, or persons, with sufficient free time to work on the technical aspects of the project. This would involve extracting the text from the PC Engine version, reinserting the translated text back into the game and making necessary code changes, and graphics adjustment. The Sega CD text has already been extracted. Contact can be made through the email address in my profile.

I'm really happy to hear about this, as it seems to be the most interesting untranslated version of the game. You have all of my support on this one. :)

You make an image of your copy of the PCE version, apply the translation patch, then run the new image in an emulator.

Good thing, I was almost at the edge of getting tired of replaying SCD Snatcher.

This should be badass, just a little sad that the spoken parts wont have subtitles.

Not the lines of the porn video dialogue.

But I'm really surprised about the sudden start of the project, since the Policenauts translation patch isn't even released yet. Glad to hear about the PCE translation.

I've come up with some difficulties with my emulator as of late, so I was wondering; are you going to be putting up a guide on how to play the game emulated again, like with Policenauts and the PSX emulators?

Which emulator are you using?

I'd recommend Ootake, it runs absolutly flawless. At least with Snatch0r.

Yeah, but that's only a few lines, so it shouldn't be a problem, right?

Anyway, this project shouldn't be as complicated as the Policenauts one (fingers crossed). But we still need someone to work on it, so feel free to ask around.

It costs about 20 dollars but Magic Engine is the best PCE emulator.

Check the Policenauts forum on 'how to play the game'. It's pretty much the same steps for Snatcher PC Engine, I think.

Although I dislike the idea of paying for an emulator, I can't do anything but agree regarding Magic Engine's prowess.

As for ripping PC Engine CD games, it's not as easy as you'd expect given that PC Engine games use a custom file system. cddissect is ideal for ripping them, it's minimalistic and does its job well.

Hmmm, see, HU-GO worked really well for me, and that was free, I checked up on the Magic Engine, and it didn't really display much more that was better than the HU-GO emulator, that's just me though. I'll try that link Charlie provided me with now.

Some of the deleted lines can be found here: viewtopic.php?p=8632

The candy stuff with Gibson was added to the 32-bit versions, though.

I always had problems with Magic Engine, the game froze after 20-30 minutes and there were annoying graphic glitches.
Using Syscard3.PCE the glitches were gone but the game froze even more frequently.

The graphics look worse with Ootake but at least it runs without problems, at least for me.

yessssssss
I knew this was coming
I admit I've NEVER played Snatcher, as I've been hoping, for the past 5-6 years a for PCE patch

just one thing

will it work on a PCE as well? I know that CDRs can be played on a PCE no problem
I'm probably just asking the obvious but, I refuse to play it on an emulator

Yame is another emulator that runs it well. The only area it has problems is the end credits, but maybe that can be fixed with some tinkering.

I suppose, if it can run CDRs.

cool
let's hope it'll work

I've just made an amp mod for my PCE and it looks like never before on RGB
Little note to anybody who's interested:
PCE is VERY picky on what CD brand you use. I made several copies of my most expensive titles (DraculaX, Ginga Fukei, etc...) and so far only the Verbatim datalife plus didn't give me any problems.
In same cases (ie cheap asian discs) games won't even start

P.S.
you guys will probably have your place in the history of videogames 8)

You've never played it? Go and play the Sega/Mega CD version, really. We can't say when this will be finished.

Yeah, go play the Mega/Sega CD version, it is worth it. The VA is very good for its time, and the changes from the PC Engine version are quite good in parts, actually. The music is good as well, and different from the PC Engine version (not better than, but still good nonetheless).
