As great as the PC Engine Translation is:

1) I like the Sega CD version just fine. 'Cept I feel Random and Modnar should have been named Randam and Madnar respectfully to hold true to Metal Gear's storyline.

2) I'm more concerned about Policenauts's Translation.

and 3) The extra stuff won't add THAT much content, and it's not like the English in the game is horrible.

That being said, if it is a painless procedure, BEST OF LUCK!!

Am I the only one annoyed that many musics don't appear in the Sega CD version :(?

This'll be great, can't wait to see it. I started playing a translation of the MSX version the other day, so this'll be a cool addition.

I didn't realize that they had removed a lot of it. For me, this will be a cool way to re-experience snatcher. I went from MSX to SCD, and now I'll buy the PCE version off of ebay and get to play that too! I'll be VERY pleased when this translation comes out.

I've listened to some of the removed music and some of the different versions, but honestly I love the Sega CD's versions of the songs, the PC Engine's christmas jingle wasn't nearly as upbeat as the Sega CD's, neither is Plato's Cavern or Outer Heaven. And I saw a clip where unless the guy had his BGM turned off, the "shooter" events had no music.

Everyone has their preferences, I guess, but personally I prefer the Sega CD version.

And although the turbocycle scene in the SCD version was weird, I don't like the idea of Snatcher becoming overly cartoony and silly. Again, personal preference. I love cartoony comedy, but I don't like mixing serious action or events with silly physical comedy.

I mean having a funny part is fine, but here's an example of what I mean:

-*Minor Spoilers*-

Gibson is found.. dead.. and it was very messy, suddenly Gillian complains about how his Neo Kobe Pizza got ruined and wants his money back. Very good moments, respectfully, but not combined. Sorry, but something like that would knock down my respect for Gillian Seed.. IF those events happened at the same time.

I'd mention another part but that's a bigger spoiler.

I like the SegaCD music a lot better. At least the sound quality is much nicer (like the JunkerHQ background music - I could listen to that for hours!).

I often do. Sometimes when I'm playing something on a separate system or working on one of my current projects, I'll load up a save at Outer Heaven, Junker HQ, Plato's cavern, etc.

I mean, having more music is grand, don't get me wrong. It's just after looking at the other versions... I don't entirely feel like I'm missing out on anything. The Sega CD version is still a pretty solid package.

This is cool and all, but do we really need this, with the Sega CD version already in English.

I would like, but without the spoken parts it's not as fun... Maybe they could take off the heads and put some text there?

I've already asked this on another topic, but this one seems more active. So, how do you emulate PC Engine CD games?? I really want to know and I've been trying for a while! I use Ootake.

You put the CD in the cdrom drive and run the emulator or you have the ISO in your HD, you create a virtual drive using something like daemon tools and run the emulator. Then you configure the emulator via GUI and chose the CD ROM drive letter.

Yeah it's working now. I have Castlevania so far and that's it. I have no clue where to find the isos/roms. Anyway, it actually would be cool to translate Snatcher.

As far as the PCE music goes ; I prefer it! I really like how all of the early versions sound, with really nice synth. Some really nice tracks in Act 3 which are missing also. Each to his own I guess.

Hello, finally joined these forums after much lurking!

As excited as I am for the Policenauts translation, this has been a translation I have been looking forward to for years! I first played Snatcher in English on Sega CD, but I am a HUGE, HUGE PC Engine fan so I was always bummed that a TGCD version was never localized. As much as I love the Sega CD version, I feel the PCE version is the definitive version of Snatcher as it's the first properly finished version of the game and a huge update over the original versions.

I also prefer most of the music tracks in PCE version as they have that certain Konami quality to them and sound closer to the originals, but are made from that PSG sound I love. The Sega CD tracks sometimes off a little too "wavey" and sometimes overdone, though sometimes this adds to the cyberpunk feel and the Junker HQ song is awesome. Too bad they did a pretty crappy job with the Metal Gear song with those silly African sounding drums.

Hope this project finishes! If you ever need to talk to any PCE programmers, be sure to drop by #utopiasoft on EFnet; they are pretty active there and should be able to help you understand anything. The www.pcenginefx.com and www.magicengine.com forums are also a good source for technical information. The PCE dev scene is more active than you may think ;) .

This is freaking awesome!, I mean, I've been checking the Policenauts' patch thread for years and still never ever saw this thread hahaha :P

I imagine all strenghts are focused on Policenauts right now, even so, is it there any update about Snatcher PCE?

I can only look forward to this as long as it doesn't disrupt Policenaut's translation.

But I can't disagree with playing Snatcher with the extra scenes and having more to look forward to. I feel the Sega Cd version was missing a few things and wanted more. (Especially when they visit Plato's Cavern).

I wish I had some programming skills so I could help.

Good luck!

I think they are not going to touch or even take a look at this game/project before policenauts translation is finished. :)

Tell me more about it. I thought the only difference between the MCD and PCE version was the level of gore (like animated exposed animal intestines).

In the PC Engine:
Spoiler:
Katrina is actually 14 instead of 18(!) and you have the added option of sniffing her underwear when she's in the shower! Kojima is a real perv, all right!

In Plato's Cavern, you can have Gillian watch a porn movie! Hilarious scene.

The name of the bar is not Outer Heaven, but rather "Joy Division". It was changed in the Western versions of the game, for fear of copyright.

The meat eaten in the bar by Gillian and Jean Jack is not buffalo meat, but something else (was it whale meat? Can't remember).

Obviously "J.U.N.K.E.R" stands for something far more silly if put into literal English and was changed dramatically by the English translator, Scott Hards in the SEGA CD version, for obvious reasons.

There is different music and remixed music.

The dog flinches continuously when it is thrown through the window, instead of being all ready dead.

There are no shooting sequences in Act 3 at all, and Act 3 is a bit shorter in exploration, as well.

Lisa's breasts are exposed when you kill her.

Elijah's hair style in his youth, is completely different to the Sega CD version.

Gillian's hair is noticeably shorter, making him look even more like Deckard from Blade Runner.

There is different colour palettes used in Elijah's flashbacks.

The end of the game is far more brief with only just Jaime and Gillian talking together (with no appearance from Katrina, Mika or Napoleon at all at the end)

Metal Gear is now rebuilt using PC Engine's parts, instead of Mega CD parts
There's more, but those ones come to mind (and are the most noticeable). In a sense, the PC Engine version is the director's cut, since it is the last version of the game Kojima worked on, at all.

So is this going to be worked on simultaneously whilst Policenauts is going to be worked on? Or after?

I'm going to head hunt some programmers to get this bad boy rolling.. Need more Snatcher!

Before reading the topic, I thought it was gonna be a different romanization than the SCD version. Not that I think it's bad (actually it's great), but I suppose the dialogue and manners to talk from some characters were changed in the localization in order to adapt the culture references. Seems like I will skip playing the PCE version then.

You'll probably want to play the Pc-Engine version after playing the sega version.

There's a little more to see.

But depends on how much you dig snatcher.

Well, I already saw all the censored stuff, but I wanted to play this version mostly because I expected a different translation. Not to mention to actually "understand" the Voice-acting from the characters (Inoue <3)

Still, I don't know how much different is the localization from the original work so...

The english voice overs are excellent. But I'd like to play the original Japanese version with subtitles to... besides this is a game where you have to spend a lot of time reading.. it's sort of an interactive novel.

Is there any update on this project? Or is this taking place after Policenauts?
