Snatcher Sega CD Ported to iOS...?

Post by best name ever »

Here's an interesting article Hardcore gaming 101 did about his recent interview with Jeremy Blaustein.
http://blog.hardcoregaming101.net/2011/ ... o-ios.html

Thought I would give you guys the heads up. I wonder if Kojima really does have anything up his sleeves for re-releasing Snatcher.......ugh, not this crap again.

I would totally buy it !

Actually, when I started learning iOS development, I thought of what sort of game would be easy for a beginner to code, and I came to the conclusion of a point 'n click.
I even started developing the scene when Gillian arrives at Junker HQ and meets Mika, but well, I just did it for fun, and to see what sort of things I could do with what I learned, I didn't go further into it...

Kojima Productions has a good number of developers, a team already developed MGS Touch, so they have have developers who know the iOS system.
What's more, they actually have all the codes and all that stuff of Snatcher.
So, I think they could make an iOS version of Snatcher in little time ! That would be easy for them...

But even little time is money for Konami, and how much money would they gain by releasing a retro game no one knows ?...

I'd buy a Re-Release (everyone at JUNKER HQ would), but on iOS? Give me a break.

Snatcher is a game that demands attention from the player.
Putting this on iOS would unleash it onto a demographic that only plays games for about five to ten minutes, mostly just to keep themselves occupied.
That alone would completely botch the feeling of the Game.
Snatcher isn't meant to be played in small intervals.

And besides, the gameplay isn't anything to brag about.
Most games on the iPhone are of the Puzzle/Action variety.

No one with that kind of attention span would want to play this game, let alone be able to follow the story with it being all cut up.
(The Story is where 99% of the game's popularity comes from!)

Just cause it sounds like a cool idea doesn't mean its going to turn out well.
This would never make any sales. All it would do is waist time and money, and we all know what Konami thinks about that.
Why would anyone whant this to happen when it'll only solidify the fears that this game won't sell.
(Destroying even more possibility of a future release.)

Why not just put the PC-Engine or PS1 versions on the Japanese PSN like they did with Policenauts?
They could even make a Snatcher-Policenauts Bundle on PSN.

I know, I wouldn't like it on iOS either but that's just what Jeremy Blaustein recommended and they rejected it.
I would rather have (as you said) it re-released on something like PSN or VC,... but I have a feeling that's not going to happen. I have this vibe that Kojima's ashamed to talk about the original Snatcher since it was one of his "earlier" works and copied allot (at least the look) from Blade Runner and Terminator.

Of course you read a 1000+ Page Novel on iOS. You knew you were going to read a Novel.
Snatcher is a game that you Read (and Watch).
There's nothing wrong with this, but let's read that again.

YOU READ A GAME ON iOS

A Game and a Novel are in two different worlds, my friend.
The demographic I talked about is the one that plays Games. When they buy a game, they don't expect a book.
This doesn't really fit in with the iOS's Game Library, especially when most users go by this logic:

"If you want literature, you read a Book."
"If you want to play a Game, you play a Video Game."

Would you ever think that the iOS's consumers would ever go outside of their boundaries for expectations?
"Hmm. I need a new KeyBoard so i think I'll go down to the local Swimming Pool and get one there."

Or what about people expecting a normal Game.
I already talked about their expectations when it comes to iOS Games, which are mostly just used as a quick Time Killer.
Snatcher isn't meant to be a time killer, it's a "Sit-Down-and-Play-Seriously" Game.

Like I said, everyone on this forum would buy it, but there are so few fans it woudn't amount to anything.
Barely anyone else is going to take this seriously without complaing about some stupid shit.
I can already see this getting One-Star Reviews by dumb 12-year olds going:

"wtf tis gaem suckss!!!!!!11!1! ima play angre burds dats a realz game!!!! fcukin rip offffff"

Ohh, you just spent $5 on a Game that normally costs +$100, some Rip Off.

Would you really want a negative response to further damage a beloved game's horrible sales-history?
(Especially a one with a sales-record so bad that it potentially kept other games from being released)

Even if they passed it off to Sega for porting to iOS as a Retro Game, that would only ease the blow.
Atleast Sonic and Ecco the Dolphin can still appeal somewhat to a mainstream audience.

With all that said, I still remember that no one is forcing people to buy it, or like it.
No matter which way I see it, it won't do very well.
If its not going to do well with the mainstream, why even bother.

I guess too few people would play that sort of game on an iOS device, like you said, most of the people just play to kill the time, so KP won't consider doing it.

But I still think point 'n click adventures can be good games on those devices, especially the iPad.
When I think of the gameplay, I'd actually prefer Policenauts than Snatcher on iPad, just because you can click anywhere on the screen, as opposite to the menu system of Snatcher.

Too bad there's almost no serious games on those devices. Well, I still enjoyed Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars and 1112 as good point'n touch games, but the quality is far from Snatcher or Policenauts...
