Snatcher Soundtrack inspired by Michael Mann's Thief?

Post by Modnar »

Hey everybody! I think its actually been over 10 years (joined waaaaay back in 2004) since I've posted anything in here but I must say that it still warms my heart to see the old place is still kicking. To the point!

So I finally got around to watching Michael Mann's directorial debut of Thief starring James Caan...the criterion sale is happening and took the opportunity to snatch this bad boy up. The film itself is a candy land of visual treats...rain soaked streaks reflecting beautiful neon signs, vibrant blues, greens, and pinks that just ooze that cyberpunk feeling (also predating Blade Runner by a year). While the film itself wasn't exactly cyberpunk in nature it certainly carries the aesthetic, and I could definitely see how this could have inspired the looks of movies and video games to come...perhaps even Snatcher (probably a stretch)
But its not just the look! So somebody can stop me if this connection has already been made and I'm late to the party....but Pleasure/Pressure of Tension (my favorite tracks) seems like it was directly inspired by a couple tracks by Tangerine Dream on the Thief soundtrack. Both tracks evoke that same emotional element in their respective games/movie. Check the links below to compare...

Pleasure of Tension -

Tangerine Dream - Diamond Diary (starts around the 2:30 mark and speeds and slows down throughout the track)

Tangerine Dream - Burning Bar (speed to 1.5 and it fits even better)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgkF2hT ... Cw&index=3

Not sure of the title but starts around the 30 second mark

Maybe I'm reaching too far but I figured id see what you guys think

No, you are not reaching too far. there is a lot of similarity here. Thank you very mcuh for pointing this out, I always am interested in this type of relationship which seems to be very common in these 80s games.

As a casual lurker for years, I just noticed this thread from 15 years ago.
