HD-DVD and/or Blu ray anyone?

Discussion for anything non-gaming.

joey, if you're saying everyone who watches movies and television will be downloading everything in 4 years, then I don't think that's true. Broadband penetration is still not ideal for that, at least in the US. If the HD format war truly does end early this year, then that leaves time for people to adopt Blu-ray if they know that's the only HD choice. A lot of people who would have liked to jump in already have been waiting it out to see who emerges on top. But what I'm saying is, it's going to be at least 10 years before downloads replace discs the way DVD has replaced VHS now, and during that time spent waiting for downloads to begin en masse, Blu-ray would be the best bet for people who are HD ready.

I believe this story. It really is over. They can never dig themselves out of the hole they're in.

Well, it has been coming to this from some weeks now. It seems positive that Blue-Ray has won (at least for now), but I'll still pick HD DVD for quality, anytime.

True, it seems liek a well coordinated effort to make the ebst out of the situation. I explain myself, it seems that everyone agreed to favour one side for the sake of confused consumers, and to make more money out of the situation since the sales were low and the window of opportunity for HD disc sales is not that wise. I don't believe it will reach the level of popularity DVD has, since people favor convenience over quality. And people don't seem to notice a quality loss/gain or don't believe the bang for the buck is right.

Of course with that in mind HD-DVD would be the way to go, since it is cheaper (discs and players) and offered better quality, but it is not mainstream enough. Sony is way more popular with the masses (even if tehy make really low quality audio and video equipment it has strong marketing just like Bose). That is a strength I believe will be good for the brand, and let's recognize that Sony has done good stuff in the past that was indeed superior and didn't sell either (Super Audio CD). Hence I believe money arrangements were made to give a way out and a solution.

So all in all it is a positive thing the war ends. Again, let's hope they do give us quality and not half baked releases as they have been doing.

Hmm, that's too bad that they couldn't have just made a format together. Heck, that would have meant that they would both win yaknow? Oh well, I guess I was planning on buying a PS3 eventually anyway. If Blu-Ray is gonna be the only next-gen video format out there then they need to at least update the audio codecs and such so that they'll eventually be higher quality than the HD-DVDs.

Yes, I'd expect the PS3 to support the rest of the HD audio formats soon. I am sure it has already been done and they are sitting on it, they are just waiting for their stand alone players to support them too, otherwise they'd kill their own market themselves.

It is annoying to have discs that you can only hear on lousy DTS or DD, just as if you only had toslink/"fiber optic".

I don't think they will be downloading EVERYTHING... But downloads are the wave of the future and will be hitting video big time in about 4 years. Even cutting into the Blu Ray market by the time 4 years comes up.

Apple is now doing them and you can get a VOD porn only box. Networks and studios are looking at this tech anew.

CDs sales are shit (half of teens did not even buy one last year) and iTunes is #2 behind Wal Mart!!! This and its only been in the past less then 5 years that it really took off.

4-5 years is a HELL of a long time trend and tech wise.

Look what happened with that World Wide Web thing from 94 to 98...All those changes to how we live and work and buy.

How did trends in consumer habits (and technology) change between 2000 and 2005? Take a look and you can see its a life time! (or sorts)

In fours years with this YouTube generation getting the media as they do, DVD will still be here (as CDs are now) but the ability to download what you want whenever will be the mainstay.

It will first pick up 1-2 years out from this year and from there will do what music downloads did for the CD.

People and companies have been trying it (VOD and such) since 2000. They all failed.

That means tho that the new model learned from the mistakes of the past and can do it right this time.

Early bird gets the worn but in business the second mouse gets the cheese!

The time of the second mouse is only about 4-5 years out.

Alot of the need to update the Internet and get more broadband is coming from media groups who want to be pure digital (well they now have to be) and have VOD and downloads be a major part of their revenue streams.

JMO tho on all of this...

Yes, it had been discussed before.. Blu ray is way behind technical implementation when compared to what HD-DVD already delivered. For instance The HD-DVD of american ganster had online sharing of playlists and around 10 items that could be downloaded to the player (trailers, deleted scenes, etc), as well as online trivia, statistics and polls.

Besides that, using Java will request them to either have in house programmers or they would need to develop software for authoring interactive stuff, which would be limited and only able to select from a small set of assets and permutations. In HD-DVD designers could do the job, since it was just an HTML like scripting language.

Hopefully they can overcome this problems soon and offer an integral experience with BD, so that the market can grow. Today's kids only want quantity aand not quality, and that will have an effect when they have money later in life.
