Slither (2006)

This is a film that I've been meaning to watch for quite some time now, despite the fact that it garnered quite a number of negative reviews and had all the makings of a sub-par comedy horror. Slither takes place in the fictional southern town of Wheelsy, a place populated by a whole manner of strange and quirky individuals, rednecks, yokels and game hunters. However, the once "peaceful" town is thrown into chaos when a mysterious asteroid harbouring an extraterrestrial parasitic lifeform, crashes nearby and later infects one of the town's residents (Grant Grant, portrayed by Michael Rooker) with that lifeform - which has plans to devour the entire human race. As time goes on, Grant eventually degenerates into something less than human and begins a series of bizarre activities, such as consuming large quantities of meat and later killing local pets to satiate his growing hunger.

Image

Fortunately, "help" is at hand with the town's sheriff Bill Pardy (played by Firefly's Nathan Fillion), who pretty much finds himself the only man able to put an end to Grant's reign of terror. There's some amusing characters in here too to keep things interesting, such as the Mayor of Wheelsy, a coarse foul-mouthed slack-jawed redneck, who has some of the more entertaining lines in the film and there's also a number of references to other films in the genre, the most prominent of which being John Carpenter's The Thing. But despite the fact that it was intended as something of a homage to the B-movies of the 1970s, Slither doesn't really do much for me. There's plenty of gore and dark humour to whet the appetites of fans of this genre, but it's definitely something that's more of an acquired taste. In a few years it's almost destined to become a cult classic. But if you're in to screwed up things or if you're a fan of bad movies in general, then give this film a try. I can't promise that you'll like it, but you might find something here that I didn't.

I actually thought this movie was more like a 3.75 out of 5. Maybe it's just because I think Nathan Fillion is an awesome actor. Speaking of Nathan Fillion, did anyone else watch the very short-lived series "Drive" on fox?

Nope, but I remember him from Firefly. Another short-lived television series.

You gotta feel sorry for the guy. Fox is always canceling his shows, but then they arrive on dvd and they sell really well. I believe the Firefly series holds one of the records for sales in dvds. Drive was another good series, but it was so short. What happened was that season 6 of 24 was losing a lot of viewers, so fox needed somebody to take the blame. It ended up being Drive. Has anybody seen White Noise 2? I heard he was in that.

Zombie eh? I have that on DVD. Got it for $8 USD

"We are going to eat you!" is on the cover... Funny! It works as a blood and gore zombie flick.

As for the films I saw. Too many since I last posted to mention them all. (like 40 of them)

Here are a few standouts:

Sukiyaki Western Django (its in English but its a Japanese film! LOL!), A Very British Gangster (doc), Ikki Tousen (anime), American Gangster, Warlords (2007 with Jet Li), Hoop Dreams, Beowulf, Justice League New Frontier (animated), Gokusen (live action and anime as well- kind of like GTO but not), Genshiken (anime), Zeitgeist (doc), The Kingdom, Gaslight (both the 1940 British one and the 1944 USA version), from Johnny To Exiled and Breaking News.

And a few more...

That is that!

The last movie I saw was "The Birth of a Nation"(1915). It's really just racist propaganda. Very well shot racist propaganda, and very innovative for it's time, but still, racist propaganda. I really only watched it out of obligation because it's so important and considered by many to be a classic.

And, speaking of racist propaganda, I'll probably see Gone With the Wind next(again, obligation).

Don't bother with GWTW man, if you're watching old movies about racism then watch To Kill A Mocking-Bird. That's a MUCH better movie. (I don't know if you're a guy, but if you are, then you just might want to forgoe GWTW. It's one of the oldest chick-flicks I've ever seen. Then again, there are probably a lot of guys who think it's a good movie, so...)

That film's glorification of the KKK made me sick and the depictions of the "good" blacks as borderline-retards happy to be slaves and the free ones as sex-crazed murderers was just evil on film. That said, it's a very important movie and without it, we probably wouldn't have a lot of the film-making techniques that we have today, so I saw it because it's was responsible for a lot of what is now necessary in modern cinema.

Birth of a Nation sounds terrible. Did they really have the KKK as "good"? It kinda reminds me of The Amazing Racist on youtube. He went around a city in a KKK outfit, and, obviously, he got in a bit of trouble because of that. Rightfully so. To me, that type of thing can be joked about, but it needs to be done in the right way, where everybody knows it's a joke. I don't buy into a lot of people complaining about racism. What about the Jews? They've been persucuted by everyone at some time. You don't see them complaining. I know quite a few black people who would never complain about racism (except sometimes in joke). I think it's just those stupid politicians who HAVE to worry about being completely PC all the time.

(sorry if this is too political. and if anyone disagrees with me, sorry, that's just the way I feel)

Just saw Gone With the Wind, and it needs to go with the wind. 3 HOURS AND 58 MINUTES of Vivien Leigh crying, screaming, whining, crazily chasing after anything with a penis, acting like a brat and saying "fiddle dee dee". You want to know what the first soap opera was, look no further. Clark Gable gave a good performance and the photography and score were both really beautiful, but
Spoiler:
You thought I was going to use the famous line didn't you? Well I won't because then the movie wins. What I will say is, despite the gorgeous Technicolor cinematography and stunning music, this is still just a 4 hour epic-scale soap-opera, and not even remotely dissevering of it's status as one of the all time great film classics!(I wonder what those people consider a bad move?)

Lol, spoken like a true man. I always love when shows like the simpsons make fun of GWTW, because it's so ridiculous. I think the reason that most women seem to like it is probably because it IS like a soap opera.
I just watched the Seven Samurai over at a friends house earlier, and that was WAY cooler (if you're into samurai films). I'm a fan of Akira Kurosawa's films. While they are sometimes a bit slow at first, they always have an awesome climax.

Yojimbo has always been my favourite Kurosawa film.

I watched Casino again the other day. Great pace to it, directing is incredible as it is a Scorsese classic what sets this one away from other crime movies however are the outstanding performances of the three leads; De Niro, Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci are all incredible in their respective parts, and how they manage to completely fuck over one casino and the lives of those around them. The supporting cast are brilliant too, which comes from the likes of James Woods and Frank Vincent who are on the top of their game in this movie.

I still find the baseball bat scene both shocking and hard to watch for its brutal, heartless execution which seems so scarily realistic. I'd say it's Scorsese's most shocking moment he has ever put to film.

A real pleasure to watch this one, great scene after great scene with a brilliant plot with interesting characters that are made larger than life by the actors and actresses in their roles. 9/10
One of my very favourite Scorsese classics.

The next film I'm going to see is the '60s War and Peace. Very excited for this one. It looks to be a really great epic and, clocking in at 403 minutes, it sure as hell better be.

Geez man. I've never seen that movie, but that's freakin' long!
I just watched an Austrailian horror film called Dead Alive. It took me a while to get used to the humor, but after that, it was pretty good. I'd give it an 8/10. I also just finished watching the British Comedy series called Black Books. If you're a fan of british humor, then you've gotta see this. It's definetly one of the funniest british series I've ever seen. It's about this Alchaholic who owns a book store. The alchy ends up hiring this guy off the street who was just fired from his job, and the show just launches off from there. It's insane how things go on (even though it sounds mediocre).
Next movie I plan to watch is a weird anime that's based off of the count of monti-cristoe. One of the guys I know told me to watch it, so I've got no clue what's in store.

From the few Kurosawa films I've seen, I must say Yojimbo is the only one I didn't like. It felt kind of... pointless. Same with its remake, For a Fistful of Dollars.

Last film I watched was Alvin & The Chipmunks. I thought it was boring. But I liked the message it tried to get across. It's about the music, not style. Next movie I want to see is Speed Racer, even though it's bound to suck ass. Hollywood's ruining another great cartoon. First Scooby Doo, then Underdog, then Alvin & The Chipmunks, and now this!!!

...And yet you still keep watching them! Hahaha~
Last thing I watched (over and over) was a quaint little Russian film called "Igla", or "The Needle". About a guy who returns to his home to claim a debt owed to him, finding an ex-girlfriend addicted to morphine (if I'm not mistaken), and his attempts to set things right. It's interesting, surreal, and just fun to watch. Not... fun fun, but... fun to digest. Recommended if you don't mind the year 1988, aha.

I recently watched "Night Watch" and "Day Watch." Two excellent russian movies. They are definetly the crazies movies I've ever seen (particularly Day Watch). Anyway, here's the trailer for anyone who hasn't seen it: <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZtVD97ss7rU&hl ... ram>

Gone Baby Gone

Really good film. Ben Affleck is a much better director than he is an actor, and his brother's a much better actor than him. The plot was pretty good, and it was interesting to see Morgan Freeman as an antagonist for a change.

8.5/10.

Okay, I just watched this REALLY weird movie called "We Are The Strange." I can't really explain it, because I don't really understand it. It's about this blue haired chick and this dollboy, who fight evil and stuff....it's really hard to explain....
Anyway, the creator/director/producer (it's all one guy) did pretty much everything by himself, so even if you don't like this type of movie, you should watch it because the stylized graphics are amazing. Here's a link to the trailer:<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/6qCSahatkbk&hl ... ram>

The guy who made the film released it on youtube for free, however, it's youtube and isn't the best quality, so I suggest getting the dvd. If you liked films like Corpse Bride, the Night Before Christmas, and weird humor like in Evil Dead 2, then you should just go out and buy it. Watch some of it on low-quality youtube, but you'll want the dvd.
This movie gets a 10/10!

Rebuild of Evangelion : Evangelion 1.01 : You are (not) alone.

First film in a series of four which are meant to remake Neon Genesis Evangelion and The End of Evangelion.

It depicts the same events which happened in the first six episodes of the TV series, but with a few twists and changes (for example, elements from the later part of the series are already present or mentioned, revised logos, design changes, totally new plot points), most of them for the better (more logical), some of them for the worse.

Most comedic scenes are left out ; the overall tone is seriousness.
Shinji is also far less "whiny" in the film (which takes less time to show his psychological problems), to the point I felt he sometimes acted more like the "classic" Japanese animation hero (i.e. in the end).

The worst part of the film is probably the beginning : it felt like watching a summary of the first episode. Then the movie gets better and better, culminating with the fight against an updated Ramiel.

The details and animation are, of course, miles better than in the TV series. I was especially impressed by the expressiveness displayed by the character's faces. The way their (and the EVA's) bodies move is also more realistic. CG scenes are overall limited to computer screens and EVA fights (The EVAs themselves, some Angels, Tokyo 3 buildings, ...).

It was a great prologue, but I wonder how they're going to be able to "summarize" 13 episodes within 1h30 in the next film...

N.B. The "DVD" image is too dark : it's hard to distinguish something if the character / EVA is already in the shadow (i.e. EVA-01 in the fight against Sachiel, characters during briefing before Operation Yashima).

8,5/10 (I'd give the series a 9)

I heard about that movie a while ago, but I don't think that they've released the dvd for it in the States. From the trailers, it seems to be an excellent way to redo the series. As long as they don't have the same stupid ending as the tv series did, then I'll probably be reasonably pleased with this new remix. BTW, do you think it's better to have Shinji whining or not (which turned out better)?

The Special Edition DVD was just released a few weeks ago in Japan.

You're perfectly entitled to have your own opinion, but, as far as I'm concerned, the TV series ending wasn't terrible. Quite on the contrary, it was a pretty good ending which nicely wrapped up Shinji's evolution from a psychological point-of-view. Too bad they couldn't it for most of the main characters (like in Episode 25). However, I agree that it's maybe a bit too 70s-like / experimental for some tastes. Besides, there's no real conclusion about what "really" happened.

IMHO, The End of Evangelion gore+sex mess was terrible.
JimboKudo wrote:do you think it's better to have Shinji whining or not (which turned out better)?
Personally, I really liked TV-series Shinji, but I know many people found him too "whiny".

Rebuild Shinji doesn't seem to mentally rehash so much his problems with others : he feels perhaps a little less "deep" (basically, he seems to be a bit like "Okay, I'm emotionally hurt by others, but I'll do the job anyway").
But it's probably due to the fact that the directors don't have as much time as in the series.

Both work in my opinion. But I guess I prefer the series' version.
