Who are your favorite authors?

Post by Anubis »

I figured I'd give the thread a shot. Right now my favorite authors would be Kurt Vonnegut and Haruki Murakami.

Currently I'm working my way through Welcome to the Monkey House by Kurt Vonnegut. It's a really amazing short story collection so far. The stories remind me why Kurt Vonnegut is easily on of my favorite authors.

I just made it through the stories Welcome to the Monkey House, A Long Walk to Forever, The Foster Portfolio
His characters and stories are all extremely memorable. I love how he drives home such simple yet profound ideas about life.

Haruki Murakami is a very similar author to Vonnegut. My favorite books by Murakami so far would be Sputnik Sweetheart. It's one of his shorter books, but I still found it to be very intense.

Both of the authors dabble greatly in magical realism, sometimes entering the realm of pure fantasy.

What about everyone else here? What are your favorite authors and books?

Herman Hesse, I love "SteppenWolf". Taught me a lot, I felt very close to the main character.

Other favorite authors are Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral, Ernesto Sabato and Tom Clancy.

The last Kurt Vonnegut I read was Cat's Cradle, loved it.

I've been reading a lot of Orson Scott Card, aside from the Ender Saga I loved Hart's Hope and Enchantment. I have also been reading a lot of Philip K. Dick, even his essays. They are great.

For non fiction, Ray Kurzweil and Douglas Hofstadter are some of my favs.

Clancy, Orwell, Isaac Asumov, Bob Bryson, and I'm finding a lot of others that I really like too. Right now I'm reading 1984 for the first time.

Truly a classic. 1984 is such an amazing book for a variety of reason. Occasionally it can be a bit dry, but definitely a must read for anyone that enjoys literature.

Ha! Thats just the thing, I don't like literature and I still like 1984. I'm not the reading type, I'd rather watch a movie.

Yeah, I'm not much into Lit either, but it's still a fantastic book. I'm surprised that it came out so long ago, since there's some scenes in it that would probably be considered VERY risque for the 40's/50's. At least that's what I would think. One of the main reasons that I like it is because it's about a dystopian country. It's the same reason I liked Equilibrium (a movie). I heard that Farenheit 451 is also supposed to be very good.

Huge H.P. Lovecraft fan, Clive Barker, although I haven't read very much of him in a long time.

Clive Barker is pretty cool. I liked Jericho, I played the game, I don't know if that one was originally a book.

Ed Brubaker.

Although his current run on Daredevil has been a bit stale (Lady Bullseye looks to shake things up however), his work on Captain America has been spectacular.

Don't think you're better than me because I read comics. At least I read SOMETHING.

Now that someone's brought it up...

Garth Ennis. His Punisher comics are amazing. MAX is one of the greatest things I've read in a while.

Cabal which was turned into the movie Nightbreed, The Hellbound Heart which is the basis for the Hellraiser movies. The Books of Blood series, which I guess technically Cabal was part of. The short story The Forbidden was turned into the movie Candyman. The Damnation Game is another one. He's done a bunch, he may not have the greatest track record when it comes to movies (although I do admit to enjoying the first couple of Hellraiser movies) but he's a great writer. He's done some really cool art too.

apparently you are one of few. But no the game wasn't based on any novel, or short story Barker wrote.

Do you mean the Hellbound Hellraiser series? I heard those are really freaky. I suppose that probably means that they're good too.

Well, I said I liked it, I didn't say I loved it. It was okay. It had some obvious flaws but it was a decent rental.

I was just mentioning The Hellbound Heart being the basis for the Hellraiser movies, so I assume you're talking about the movies? I know the second Hellraiser was called, Hellbound: Hellraiser 2.

For comics it's Warren Ellis for his ability to write the grittiest comics I've ever read that deal with real crimes (Scars was based upon a real life case in England about a child raping and killing by a school janitor) and then go on write something really unrealistic and over the top and for it still to be a gripping read regardless with an underlying message. He never forces it on you thickly, he pulls no punches. He also does a fair few comedies as well, which are really funny and cynical. Very much a versatile writer. Then there's Alan Moore, can't get away without mentioning him.

For novels it is definitely the likes of Stephen King, Franz Kafka, Agatha Christie, William Hjortsberg and Dean Koontz.

Mystery has been, and always will be, my favourite genre of fiction, could anyone recommend any writers for me? Cheers.

I think that's the one. I heard it starts out with a guy being held up by meathooks.

Not an Orwell fan myself. Too depressing. Couldn't give you my favorite authors to be honest, but right now I'm reading Dune(awesome), Outlaws of the Marsh(Yeah, it was written 700 years ago in medieval China but it still kicks ass) and Arther C Clarke's book of 2001: A Space Odyssey(enjoyable but it can't hold a candle to the movie in terms of scope and power).

Frank Herbert. He had amazing ideas about politics and religion and used them very creatively to install depth and insidious plotting into his Dune-series (My favorite body of work in literature)
