Jesse's easy guide for Policenauts emulation on Windows/Mac!
Right, here we go. This is my first guide I've written, so it's probably not very good.
You will need -
*Policenauts - PSone version, any original or Private Collection or remake or whatever
*PCSX
*NTSC/JAP PSone BIOs
Right. If you can't find the bios (they're pretty hard to find), you can email me on jessequan@optushome.com.au, or PM me and I'll send them to you.
Once you have this, go to your Application support folder (I use a Mac, so I don't know where to put the BIOs on a PC), find the folder labelled PCSX and put the BIOs file in the BIOs folder, or whatever it's called. Once you have done this, pop in your Policenauts disc and and open PCSX. Go to File>Run CD or just press Command+R, or Control+R, or whatever it is on PC.
If you experience some major problems like I did at first, so you'll need to go to the Preferences option and do this, doesn't matter which order you do it in.
*On the "Emulation" tab, select "No CD Audio" and "No XA Audio". There will be sound, so don't worry about this. If there is no sound, try checking both, or one or the other. It might be different for other computers.
*Under the "System Region" tab, select NTSC (USA/Japan)
*Click the "Plugins" tab and press the "Configure" button under "Graphics". Under the "Dither Graphics" tab, select "Never". This will only faulter the graphics and make Policenauts look really awful.
*Check "Enable Hacks" but don't select any check boxes unless you have a slow computer and need to speed the game up. If this is the case, check "Lazy Screen Updates" or "Use PC FPS Calculation" and "Use Old frame Skipping". If your computer is indeed that much of a piece of shit, you might want to select all three. Play around with the checkboxes and see what suits your computer
*If your sound lags and fucks up real bad, click the "Configure" Button in the part of the window labelled "Sound" and check "SPU IRQ Wait" and "High Compatibility Mode". Have "Enable XA Playback" checked unless your sound fucks itself up real bad, then uncheck it. These are just my settings I'm describing, and once again, it might be different for every other computer. But try my settings first anyway, and see how they are.
Contact me or fiddle around with the settings, and bada-bing, bada-boom! You have successfully emulated Policenauts!
If there's any trouble, or you are not sure what I'm talking about in parts of my guide and would like screenshots to help you, please don't hesitate to ask.
Peace -

BTW (and sorry for the double-post), it may be early for this, but... well, I went ahead and bought Policenauts and tried emulating it. Got it running beautifully with pSX (very simple, just set up the bios and go), but I couldn't figure out a way to enable Playstation mouse support in that emulator. I hope whatever tutorial you guys write-up will include setting the game to run with a mouse, because it really seems designed for that. And I'm not sue I'll be able to get past the shooting scenes without it! I also bought the Private Collection, and man some of those shooting gallery scenes in that are HARD.
Anyway, that was first time I actually played some of Policenauts. Even managed to get through the whole prologue with random clicking. It looks beautiful, can't wait for the translation!

Thanks Osiris.
Really, there's a lock-on feature? How do you enable it?Kaz wrote:I played through Policenauts without a mouse (I don't have a Saturn mouse) just fine. There's a lock-on function in the shooting scenes so they're no big problem.

In the Playstation version L1/2 or R1/2. It depends if the enemy is left or right from your crosshair position.Snatcher42 wrote:Thanks Osiris.Really, there's a lock-on feature? cool, this means, it will be pretty playable on the PSP (L/R2 are mapped to the analog stick, which is kinda sucky, if they have different functions than L/R1)Charlie Johnson wrote:Snatcher42 wrote:In the Playstation version L1/2 or R1/2. I do have custom firmware, and I've emulated about everything (except for pc-engine, which is a friggin' pain to set up). I've played ps1 games on my psp before, but I usually format them using autopopstation, so that they work perfectly. I was wondering if I could somehow use autopopstation with the patch or if I needed to go get an emulator (homebrew) to emulate the ps1, so that I could use the patch that way.Anubis wrote:To play on the psp you will first need Custom Firmware
If you have it, it's extremely simple to do.
Re: Jesse's easy guide for Policenauts emulation on Windows/Mac!
you just patch your ps1 image before converting it to psp
