I completely forgot this.

If you are playing on PS1 or PS2, your brand of CD-R matters for the intro movie.

1. You must burn the CD-R at 1x-4x (do 1x for best results). And you really should use a burner that absolutely does 1x-4x. Forcing the burner slower with programs like ImgBurn got me an intro movie with no sound.

2. I made 10 Hypermedia coasters before switching to Memorex and that worked for me. Someone on SA had problems with that, but from what I heard, Verbatim discs are actually the best.

I have used Sony and Memorex CD-rs without problems, always at 4x speed. 16x-40x always gave me trouble, not during the intro but in certain parts during the game it would simply not load and report a disc error.

During those, I could burn the new CD-R at 4x and change the disc and the game would recover from where it left... better burn them slow for just once I say...

I usually use the memorex brand cd-rs with the black tint. They never fail me.

1x-4x burning speed...man, i hate that shize...where the hell am i going to find a cd burner from 2000? Its so strange too. The konami logo and intro dont work on disc 1 but they work on disc 2. Everything else works fine also. Its so...frustrating.

There's nothing you can do about it for the intro movie. The reason is the PS1 and PS2 have cheap lasers, so to really read CD-RWs, the dye needs to be really dark.

It doesn't matter for a lot of the other stuff, but the intro movie is a special type called "XA data" - I don't know why it's like that and nothing else. You can use a program called ImgBurn to "force" your burner down to 4x or below. I found I'd get an intro movie with no sound when I did that. (Everything else worked otherwise)

The thing is that XA has no error correction when in Mode 2, the file uses up the CRC space as well.

I'm a newb to this forum, but for what it's worth:

I've successfully booted and watched the intro on disc 1 using averate "Intenso" (Moser Baer) media, on an older PS1. How? 4x burning on a Plextor PX-760A

The drive is just as important as the media, but even average quality media should work fine as long as you can get the best burn out of it.

Those of you with sub-standard burners (sorry, there are many out there), consider an AD-7200 or AD-7240 by Optiarc. Here is why:
http://www.cdfreaks.com/review/15981-op ... er-review/

CDFreaks may also give you an idea about brands. I'm lucky my drive will make the best of nearly any disc (that's not a boast, go read up on Plextor), but if you want the very best burns, read up at CDFreaks. Some types of Verbatim discs, and any proper Taiyo Yuden discs are generally considered the finest available.

Oh, and thank you so very much to the translation team. I'm looking forward to settling down for a few nights with some sessions of Policenauts. :)

So the intro on disc 2 isn't xa data also? Im tempted to believe that my cd burner burnt well 1 time out of five because the videos on both discs look identical.

Memorex and Sony brand CD-Rs appear to work fine on my PS1 burned at 8x (the slowest my Macbook Pro's drive will go).

How's this for bad luck though? The laser unit on my PS1 started failing the day the patch was released. (I haven't used it in several years, but it had previously worked fine). At first I thought it was the media or burn speed, which is why I also tried Sony brand. Luckily a shop around here sells used Playstations for $14.99, so I bought one and swapped out the laser unit. Works like a champ now. I'd emulate, but I prefer playing on actual hardware.

I just patched my copy of Policenauts and burned it on a CD-RW, but the PlayStation (which recognizes burned Japanese and American games) doesn't recognize it.
Doesn't the modded PlayStation recognize CD-RWs ? Or is it only CD-Rs ?

Only CD-R's I think...

I finally got some Verbatim discs and used my modern burner with Imgburn forcing down to an average of 5x and got the game to work all the way through. I only had a couple of times where the system lost track of the disc, but recovered quickly.

Overall no problems.

I finally burned the first disc on a CD-R ; I'm not sure, but I think the brand is TDK.
Well, I used the older computer I have with a Superdrive, but I couldn't burn under 6/7x burning speed, so I have a lot of freezes when there is something to load.
Sometimes I have to play a part of the game with the Japanese version and save to advance through the game... :|
But I can still enjoy the game, wich is very great !

Thanks again for this amazing translation !

whitetrashshayno : 714 MB is the normal size of the patched disc 1, I didn't get any trouble to burn it, I read that a CD can have up to 900MB of storage...

My LG Blu-Ray Writer drive wouldn't burn a CD-R at 4x, but i used ImgBurn to force 4x, and it works fine. I finished the game yesterday - no problems with sound or video. I'm using some no-name black dye CD-R's.

Sorry for the necro-bump, just wanted to share my experiences getting this game to work.

I found that Disc 1 is especially difficult to get working since of all the XA data and the fact that the game exceeds standard CD size. I tried Fuji (Prodisc) and Verbatim (CMC Magnetics) but experienced random crashing with all my systems (1 PSX and 2 PS2's).

I sourced some Taiyo Yuden's under the JVC brand, but found that even recording them at the slowest speed I had didn't guarantee success. Using a quality Pioneer BDR-206 at 4x wasn't enough to solve the problem.

I flashed my Optiarc AD-7260S with experimental firmware from the CDFreaks website. It doesn't record slower than 8x, but still it recorded the TY discs perfectly so they play on all systems.

Moral of the story: The disc and drive you use are most important. Slow speeds are better yes, but they alone won't make up for the first 2. In fact, when I used to have a Plextor 716SA, they worked perfectly with PSX at 52x record speeds.
