Who has actually played through Policenauts flawlessly?

Talk about Kojima's hard sci-fi masterpiece.

Who has actually played through Policenauts flawlessly?

Post by Junker_05 »

Out out of curiosity, who here has played through Policenauts without any trouble understanding Japanese... or have just fluked their way through the game with no knowledge of Japanese language whatsoever?

I understand Japanese, I know a few other people here like Johnny Undaunted do too. There are still new bits I'm discovering after all this time, for instance I only recently found out that if you drink too much milk during the dinner with Ed's family, it turns into this running thread of Jonathan having a stomach ache and diarrhea until the end of Act 2. It has some pretty funny lines. He gets rid of it at BCCH's bathroom after you load the CD-ROM.

Then you can also use the microphone for the PA system in BCCH's reception area and Jonathan tells the entire hospital he's "in love" with the receptionist, then she cuts it off. I think Policenauts is definitely Kojima's funniest game.

I played it without understandind japanese... and I still loved every bit of it.

Come to think to it, my first playthrough MGS was in Japanese too... That game looked just too good to wait for a western release!

I'm learning Japanese, but at the time I played Policenauts, I didn't know a damn thing that was going on. I still did fine though. It's enjoyable enough just watching the nicely animated cutscenes. The only point I had trouble with was the damn bomb disposal. But if you read a FAQ, you should have no problem getting past it.

I've played through the Sega Saturn version recently, and I found a curiosity that I don't think is being mentioned on walkthrought sites. Anyway, after completion, and having saved the game just before the Epilogue, you get to see the normal version of the ending credits, which is:

- Credit Sequence with several BGM playing, "Photo and watch" anime sequence, Policenauts crest.

If you load the Epilogue again, you get different versions of the Credits sequence, depending of how many times you've loaded it beforehand:

2nd time - You see the normal credit sequence, but with an arranged version of the Policenauts theme playing, "Photo 'n watch", Policenauts crest.

3rd time - "Photo 'n watch" sequence first, then the Credits sequence (normal) and then the Crest

4th time - Credits sequence, but this time in addition to the normal BGM tunes playing, you hear several bits of dialogue from the whole game, and a bonus one (don't know what they're saying though), "Phot 'n watch", Crest.

edit: Now I don't remember if in the third time you already hear the dialogue bits. But eventually, if you keep loading the epilogue, you return to the normal sequence.

That's it.

Yeah, the order changes after you've beat it once. I'm not sure about the photo and watch cut being moved before, though. I've never seen that myself. That was the order it went in the 3DO version, but they switched it starting with the PS version. It works much better that way, I think.

There are a bunch of secrets in the game that aren't on any of the sites I've seen. Of the top of my head:

Shooting Trainer:

-You can see Dave shoot in Act 1 if you get more than 50 points in Training Mode.
-You can see Redwood shoot in Act 1 if you get more than 400 points in Training Mode.
-You can see Meryl shoot in Act 2 if you get more than 200 points in Training Mode and didn't make the bet with her to touch her breasts in Act 1.
-You can touch Meryl's breasts if you click on them in Act 1, then get over 550 points in Training Mode in Acts 1 or 2.
-Rats will run across the screen if you get a perfect score of 100 in Target Mode.
-If you shoot the two wall targets 100 times in Combat Mode, you'll get a larger clip of 20 rounds for your gun.

Bomb Defusal:

-If you fail to deactivate the vibration sensor 3 times, you can have Ed do it (pick the top option). When he fails, if you pick him to do it again, it'll be a much easier maze and he'll pass it. If you do things this way but then fail at a later stage of the defusal and choose to do it yourself (the bottom option), the maze will become much harder.

Breast Touching:

-If you have touched over 4 womens' breasts by the time you get to the bag store, you can touch the hostage's breasts.
-You can touch the breasts of the 2 girls at Tokugawa's party (and kiss them, too) if you ask them things in a certain order. Choose 電話番号 a few times, then 3サイズ, then click on them and pick 触る. For kiss, pick キスする after asking for her number a couple of times.

Dinner:

-If you drink too much milk at Ed's house (keep drinking it until you get the same sick-sounding response), Jonathan will get stomach problems and later diarrhea, until he goes to the bathroom after watching the Narc CD at BCCH.

There are a lot of other little lines in the game, but they're kind of meaningless if you don't understand them because the humor is the point.

I haven't managed to get to the hostage's breasts... pehaps I haven't exhausted all of the options at the Tokugawa party. I remember I got a "3 size" though, from one of them.

Heh, the Tokugawa building receptionist doesn't take those things too lightly, eh? The first time I got there, I was kicked out... (maybe because I was thinking of breaking into the elevator before she realized I was a Police-nut.) although, she takes it too well, for real life standards, anyway! Ahh, the Policenauts world - where you can wobble any women's breasts (several consecutive times) and get away with it nicely! The museum girl's breasts get a 9!!! (in the Richter scale)

The shooting sequences are a pain for me, not having the gun. No matter the cursor speed I choose, I always get shitty accuracy and speed. I was literally scared to death in the final showdown. Aiming the huge red dot at the half-inch people... fast or else!!

Are you Japanese, by the way?

You can use the lock-on buttons to help with the aiming. You can also touch the girl at BCCH if you look at her breasts and then pick 背伸びする

No, I'm not Japanese.

Which is the lock on button, by the way?
Yeah, I've managed to have a swing at the BCCH receptionist's breats, too. And at Kris'. Kris starts asking me if I'm a pervert, after a while, denying me any further handlings :(. (That countdown before the Sharon Stone moment was nice as well).

The lock-on buttons in the Saturn version are the L and R buttons.

Interesting tidbit...

I decided to read this thread at school during Physics (we're working in the computer lab all week) and the teacher came by and saw "touch Meryl's breasts" on the screen.

No word yet on how much trouble, if any, I'll get in for reading "pornographic material". Heh.

They probably will. They're always looking for a reason to take me down though. Apparently I have "dangerous ideas" (long story)...

Come to find out I'm only getting 5 points knocked off the assignment I was working on at the time. It doesn't sound like much, but keep in mind that the most points we can make on this assignment is a 20. It could've been a lot worse.

Sorry, it's my fault for starting this... :(

Anyway, I'm getting through the game again, and this time I'm picking up a little more of the dialogue. My understanding of Japanese is very minimal, but I can still read hiragana, katakana and some kanji (at least some kanji in a few significances/readings). For example, in the first conversation with Tony Redwood at the AP room, Tony starts suggesting Jonathan to return to Earth (I noticed that the Kanji are "tchi-kyu", but the furigana reads "HOME", which probably means that furigana is not always a spelling of the kanji, but rather an explanation of sorts), because this is Beyond Coast. I don't understand really is what does Tony mean with this. Is he implying that Jonathan is some sort of grunt that doesn't belong in an evolved environment, or is he implying that Beyond Coast is a tougher environment, and they "work for a living" there?
Then Jonathan mentions something with "zombie" in it. Maybe he's calling Tony a zombie, or something?
After that, finally, Ed settles Jonathan down.

Looks like Tony is also telling Ed that to disarm a bomb, the blue wire is the one to cut (which seems to be not true later on).

In the shooting range, looks like Ed has a problem with picking up a firearm. Maybe Ed became traumatized after killing Tony's brother?

I'll try and answer your questions. There are some spoilers in here.

"Home" is slang for Earth in the game. Tony is telling Jonathan to go back to Home because, being a Terrestrial, he won't survive on Beyond (so he says). Frozeners are genetically engineered to be well adapted to outer space. They have artificial crystalline lenses in their eyes, which aren't affected by changes in atmospheric pressure; they have artificial hybrid bones, which won't be affected by calcium loss due to weightlessness; they have artificial auditory ossicles, which helps prevent SAS (Space Adaptation Syndrome, or a type of sickness caused by exposure to zero gravity); and they use artificial blood, which has a higher oxygen transportation efficiency than normal blood, so their body isn't negatively affected in areas of low oxygen density. And their genes are already well adapted to space to begin with, because they are fathered with sperm from past astronauts. So all that makes them well suited to space's environment, more so than Jonathan or a normal human. He considers himself superior than a normal person.

Jonathan calls Tony a zombie because he's joking that he looks like a zombie - his artificial blood is white, which gives him and all other Frozeners a pale complexion.

About the bomb part, he's explaining about a bomb he says he just defused earlier. He's asking them which wire they would pick to cut (red or blue) to disarm it if Redwood were to set it.

Ed's excuse for not shooting in the Shooting Range is that his eyes "aren't what they used to be", but then later you find out he hasn't been able to use a gun since he shot and killed Marc's father in order to save him from being killed by him.

Thank you, Osíris. That helped a lot understanding this a little bit more. It's a bit painful and tiring for me to slowly read the captions to get the going ons... and still losing most of the subtleties...

It would be a good idea perhaps, that when the text dump is achieved, to release the dump here so we can all see what we can make of it. Even people with four year old Japanese skills like me could help advancing the translation one way or another, since it's a huge ammount of text, and it would perhaps be more efficient to release it in pieces and hand them to several people. After that, one single person could clean it up and revise the whole thing for consistency.
That's just a suggestion, but it all depends on the preferred method of work for the current people involved in it.

(I do know a person which is fluent in Japanese, and some of it's dialects besides Tokyo-ben. But I have my doubts that he could be of help right now due to the ammount of work he already has between hands (he's a translator for Newtype USA). I don't know, but this Policenauts thing sounds like *work*... so I have my reservations in approaching him for this. I'll see...)

I hope we can finish the dump and get a translation out someday, too. Right now we're just trying to focus on the dump, and get a workable one done.
