Goddard

Well, I just saw Innocence again (Ghost in the Shell 2) and was reading about it again today. And I came upon an interesting thing, that I quote from Wikipedia:
"This desire to include quotes by other authors came from Godard. The text is very important for a film, that I learned from him. It gives a certain richness to cinema because the visual is not all there is. Thanks to Godard, the spectator can concoct his own interpretation. [...] The image associated to the text corresponds to a unifying act that aims at renewing cinema, that lets it take on new dimensions."
Of course, I immediately recalled several (obvious and loosely related) things.

1) The episode 3 of Ghost in the Shell, stand alone complex, makes direct quote references to "Breathless", one of Godard's films. (This series is from completely different creators, but I believe the reference is a nod to Innocence and obviously the sharing of same interests/ideas.)
2) The relationship between Oshii and Kojima, specifically when Kojima did Policenauts and Oshii played the game. And Kojima being a fan of Oshii's work.
3) The Goddard name in Policenauts. The katakana representation of the name is ゴダード (though romanization is always (?) Goddard).
4) Kojima also likes placing quotes here and there, though it is neither as direct (or not translated as literally).

What do you guys think?

Here: Oshii and Kojima

In that interview. I do have a translation to spanish, but it is not as polished. I will put up a fully translated version some day.

That's cool. When I saw Innocence, especially the last part with that unbelievable action sequence, I thought that if there must be a GITS - Innocence game, Kojima should do it.

But wait, I perfectly know that he isn't the guy that accepts a tie-in. In fact, what would be cooler, is to see Oshii and Kojima working together on a project. It could be one of those multimedia project that span on different products... Such creative minds rarely can team up effectively (just like Oshii couldn't work at Ghibli with Miyazaki), but it would be nice to see because those two really share a similar vision.

But sorry, I'm straying from the topic. By the way, have you seen Godard's Breathless (A bout de souffle)? It's truly an awesome film. I've also seen The Chinese (La Chinoise) and I must say his works were really groundbreaking for things to come.

The EMPS models are actually named after rocket scientists though.

Robert Goddard, Hermann Oberth and Wernher von Braun (Von Brawn) were all well-known scientists in the field of astronomy. The Yuri model was named after Yuri Gagarin according to the Policenauts glossary, although it could arguably be a reference to Harold C. Urey (when you consider the "official" romanization).

Also, Tony Redwood and his brother, Ridley, share the same given names with the real life Scott brothers.

I think Gundam paid homage to Von Braun too.

Haven't seen that episode. What references are there to Breathless?

Spoiler:
Several textual quotes from the two characters, they used them alternating as if they were the characters in Breathless, a gynoid and the son of a diplomat that loves cinema.

I noticed a few things that reminded me a lot of Snatcher in the Akira manga (I bought the first two parts last week).
Most noticeably Nezu looks quite like Napoleon-

Spoiler:
The laser beam shot from the satelite that tries to kill Tetsuo when he escapes with Akira also reminded me of the laser that was shot at the Snatchers' factory at the end of the game

Just the whole scene in GITS:I when they are investing the crime scene, it seems as if they go through just like in snatcher. like they same something about investigating body samples or whatever they said...it prob wasnt so similar but when i saw it i just felt as if gillian and metal were in there helping out.
