No more Hidechan?

Post by Marc »

On the latest Hidechan, Kojima said he's not sure if the show is going to continue, since he feels he should be spending the time on game development. Maybe it'll be changed to a bi-monthly show, maybe he'll go back to the blog, or maybe he'll stop all of it altogether? He said once before that the blog takes several hours to write sometimes, so that seems longer than the time they put into recording the radio show... That was one of the reasons he stopped doing the blog in the first place, too.

One person left a particularly harsh comment (and in the plain form at that): "If you do this you'll have betrayed your listeners."

As someone who doesn't speak Japanese, I don't see any loss from this. I was quite disappointed when they stopped updating the Kojima Productions Report, though.

Well, look at it this way - if they stop doing it, we won't be able to pass on any scoops anymore.

The KP Report was all right, but it was sometimes just about PR. Another thing that bugged me about it was I never understood why, given the access they have to the studio, they never saw fit to pass on all the juicy info that's made available through Hidechan. They just sat on it, leaving it to myself or someone else to pass it on, then they'd "unveil" it a few weeks later after everyone already knew about it (a case in point being the MGS movie announcement). There are also those 3 sessions they did at TGS that have been MIA for 2 months.

Eh, I'll stop my rant here. :???:

Well, I think you've passed on more from the Japanese gaming press and Japan only "Making Of" books than HideChan, alone.

Truth to be told, the number of scoops from Hidechan has been limited, I guess. The ones that stand out in my mind right now are the Uwe Boll directing denial, the movie announcement, and the MGS4 trailer preview.

By the way, I can't remember if I mentioned this before or not, but the translated MGSNaked book will slowly be uploaded to TUS, piece by piece, over the course of a couple of months. The first 2 articles (Kojima's Favorite Films and A Portrait of Hideo Kojima) have been done since about forever, but the staff has been a little busy, right guys? :P

It looks like all the negative reaction from last week has made Kojima decide to continue the show for the foreseeable future.

Poor Kojima, he's only wnating to do whats best and work on the game; he must be one busy guy having to jump at fan's requests like that and make MGS4, MPO etc; I bet it is all very draining. I hope the end product that is MGS4 does not lose any of the quality it could have had with all this work he is doing at one time.

If you ask me, he's being the fool for constantly trying to appease his fans. I'm not saying he shouldn't take advice from others on how to improve the quality of his games, but he needn't do things he doesn't want to do -- or in this case, doesn't have the time to do -- to make others happy, while he remains unhappy. I just hope this doesn't lead up to him directing MGS5.

That seems to be different. He commented publicly on it in 2003 at the time of the game's most recent re-release in Japan when he said it's a part of his past he couldn't go back to, so I'm guessing that's an exception. Goodness knows certain people (myself included) have tried pestering him and Konami for it several times, but he doesn't seem to want to do it. I'm sure the fact that he wants to work on new games also plays a part in it.

I think it's Konami who's to blame rather than Kojima. He always tries to please his fans, especially now, but it'll be very hard to sell the pitch to the publishers. I mean, it's a 12-year old text-based adventure game which is heavly anime stylised, isn't part of a franchise, and would cost a lot to translate and dub. It's very risky. The only way they'd have any chance of selling it would be if "FROM THE MAKERS OF METAL GEAR SOLID" was written in a much bigger font than the title.

I agree with all your points. I don't know if we'll ever find out the entire story. All we have are the little bits and pieces over the years, and some of that is speculation.

Fact:

- The 3DO version was shown at E3 '95.
- KoA did prepare a press release around May '96, for a Saturn version, but the game was a no-show at E3. (This is available online somewhere but I can't remember where; can anyone help?) It was due for release at the end of the year.
- In August of '96, Kojima said the nature of the game system made the game hard to translate. They'd planned on doing an English version and had discussed it 3 times, but had to let it go.
- An employee of Working Designs, who tried to release the game as a third party, said the situation was far more complicated than it appeared and a lot of it was due to KoA's decisions.
- Mock-up box art for the English Saturn version (a drab shot of a Goddard EMPS on the moon) was distributed in '96.
- In 2000, Chris Mike, KoA's VP of marketing, pushes to release the games outside Japan, but loses his job soon after.
- KoA say they "can't release games just to please a small contingent of hardcore players" (personal correspondence with employees).

Rumor:

- The game's translation was X% completed.
- There are betas of the game somewhere.
- Jonathan's smoking prevented a PS version.

Fiction:

- Jeremy Blaustein offered to translate it for free on Konami's message boards.

Feel free to add any others or make corrections.

Why though? It could be released as Kojima's 'new' game, it will sell well. It is well sought after and people would buy it since it would be Kojima's next game after MGS4! It wouldn't bomb at all. Stupid KoA!

Maybe you are not thinking with the mainstream in mind. The genre is not something that will draw masses, most people don't bother to read, and a big chunk of the consumers skips the cut scenes. Most of the Kojima fans nowadays are because of Metal Gear, and they regard it as an action game and hence, play it for gameplay reasons. Besides, they'd need to update it to appeal to current "next gen graphics" hungry consumers.. a thing that won't happen.
From the mathematical perspective, consciousness might be regarded as a second derivative of sensation.

MGS isn't really that action packed though. MGS4 maybe, but aside from that; it's really all about the plotline.

They could get voice actors and stuff for it as well as update the graphics in some sections. Or maybe, just maybe do what they have done for the original MG games and release it with MGS4's add on (ala Subsistence)? They translate dit all over again for the mobile version of the game and then used THAT for MG. Why not for Policenauts?

Those were MG games marketed as add-ons to another MG game. It's not the same thing.

Policenauts is not for all tastes. It's a slower paced game with less "control" than a 3D game. It's a cinematic game as well; a lot of its feel would be lost on the small screen of a handheld system, which is probably the only way they could release it now.

Yes I know, but if you think about it, release with MGS4's add on and slap Hideo Kojima's name on the front of it and people will be interested. Because after MGS4, he is no longer continuing that game, this could be a good way for people to see what his other games are like.

An English Policenauts would probably sell worse than boktai 2. That's the game that sold so poorly it convinced Konami to rebrand boktai completely, to sell it to America.

I'd say it was unfortunate, but I haven't even felt interested enough to play it for more than two hours, so far (that's after around 2 years of owning it, I think).

They would've done that already if they wanted to. It's a great game, one of the best I've ever played, but what's good and what'll sell don't always match (just look at Hollywood).

I am saying it could be put in the add-on for MGS4; would be a good idea, like they did for MG 1 and 2 in MGS: Subsistence.

By the way, if there's one older game that I don't think needs a graphical redoing, it's Policenauts. It's aged better than most games from the mid-90s, thanks to its anime graphical style. It still looks incredibly good.

I'm assuming they used cells rather than computers to animate Policenauts, so I think it might need re-mastering to be able to cope with high-resolution TVs. Otherwise, nothing needs to be done (graphically, that is).

I meant what 87th said.. by updating it, they need to redigitize everything to match current gen resolutions to appeal to customers. Of course it all depends on what platform they'd choose, but it is all idle speculation anyway, and it is also improbable that they woulnd't fiddle with content if they are redigitizing audio, video and stills...

Wow! The game looks more impressive to me than most games I see being released nowadays (which version of the game was that anyway?) There are games out there with the same 'arty' approach to the look of the game that is popular; Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Okami, killer7 etc. Plenty.

That's from the PlayStation version, though the graphics in the 3DO and Saturn versions are virtually identical to it. The 3DO has a little pixellation due to the compression method used for the graphics, however.
