Kojima's western inspiration
legendary mgs creator hideo kojima has repeatedly claimed that he will not be heading up the develiopment of mgs5, saying that he'd rather leave that task to his younger teammates while he helms an all-new project. Well, if our Q-spies intel is legit, it sounds as if kojima might be looking to dive headfirst into the competitive realm of first-person shooters (sorry , zoe fans). Japanese developers have traditionally had a tragic track record in the genre, but kojima could very well be the pioneer who changes all of that. He was recently spooted meeting with some of the western game development community's top FPS teams. including infinity ward (call of duty), Treyarch (quantum of solace), and Guerrilla games *kill zone 2*. Perhaps he's just getting advice... or maybe seeking a develipment partner.

End.

Kojima WTF

I don't see a problem if Kojima's working on an FPS. I'm sure it won't be the standard Blacksite/Area 51/Brothers In Arms/Medal of Honor average shooter, anyway. I think it could have the potential to be as interesting as Half-Life 2. Of course, I'm being optomistic, but if I don't like the look of the game, I won't buy it. The fact that Hideo Kojima is working on it isn't all that important, really.

I am hope'n that it'd be more story orinented than most fps's. I really don't want another game that you beat as fast as possible to get to the online mode.

I'ma try and stay optimistic.

As was the case for many years, but I heard he's not so bad with it anymore, after working with the 3D cameras in Subsistence and MGS4.

Couldn't it be possible for this to be the Project S? Hopefully he figures out quickly enough that cutscenes don't make a great fps, because all of the best FPSs have been immersive in the fact that you feel like the character during gameplay (Bioshock, System Shock 2, Deus Ex). Other than doing a FPS-RPG I don't really see how it could turn out well.

If Kojima really is working (or even just interested in) on some FPS then i might as well just give up videogaming. I'd also burn my collection....
How could anybody (on these forums at least) be excited about this is beyond me. FPSs are the worst thing ever happened to the videogame industry.

FPS games are the reason that graphics cards for computers (and computers in general) have gotten so good over the years. Doom's done a lot more for games than most other games have, console or otherwise.
Life and Death hang in perfect balance...I'm only here to tip the scales.

The majority of Snatcher was essentially in First-Person, as the scenes were generally drawn from Gillian's viewpoint (the only exceptions are generally in scenes that show Gillian doing something physically important). There's every chance a modern day Snatcher game would be in First Person (if not an FPS).

Yeah, not to mention I always imagined a new Snatcher game being just like Deus Ex, set in the cyberpunk world, a first person adventure where you could interact with everybody and go do missions. Shooting everything would actually put you at risk, and the best option would be to take things cautiously, taking the enemy out one at a time. In fact, I think Deus Ex is pretty much what a new Snatcher game would be if it were being made today as a FPS title (it would certainly get comparisons). I wouldn't think Kojima would make the game totally action focused, shoot everything that moves or anything.

Holy shit, that is the worst thing I have ever seen on a forum, you are entitled to your opinion but.. damn man. You are sadly mistaken, they are more realistic than other games, they also make you feel the game by putting your perspective right on the main character instead of around him. They are the top of the line in gaming, in my opinion, and your harsh comments sicken me, my friend. I for one think it's good that Kojima is working on an FPS, if you mix his talent at creating a story with a game developer like Infinity Ward or Valve or even Guerrilla you will get an instant, epic title for sure, of course there is the possibility that he will screw up big time like he did on MGS4, but like MGS4, even if that happens it will still be an awesome game. I'd like to think optimistically about any new title from Kojima Corp, this is anew direction they're taking, so they are starting with a clean slate and don't have a bunch of prequels who's story needs to be followed to the dot, I think it's going to be good.

True, but I find it really hard to completely hate an entire genre like that, especially when there are games like Half Life 2 and Halo in the genre.

and it's just as hard to understand why someone would blindly fallow a genre. Like I said, FPS', RPGs, and every other genre are the same in one aspect; there are good games, and bad games. To hate a whole genre of gaming, or to blindly love a whole genre are basically the same idea taken to the opposite extremes. Ya gotta take games on a game by game basis. I'm not saying it's 'wrong' to say "yeah I like RPGs" or something like that, but to take that to the extreme and say I only love this genre, or that genre, or I hate this genre or that genre is closed minded and immature. I think you understand the point I'm trying to make here.

Also, to even put Halo in the same sentence as Half Life is a major faux pas, but I digress.

Music, books, and movies are exactly the same way. There ARE certain genres that seem to go through more pitfalls than other. The two genres in videogames that seem to have the most problems are RPGs and FPSs. There's Chrono Trigger (fantastic) and then there's Final Fantasy XII (craptastic). This Kojima FPS will be different I'm sure, but that's only the starting point for a good game.

The only problem I have with FPS games are that they're a very easy way to present an action game. Generally speaking, a developers' choice to make an FPS game shows that they aren't thinking too originally with the gameplay mechanics, and the games often come across as worse for that. So much FPS games focus on straight action, but play very similarly to others, so I have little interest in a lot of them.

Of course, this is a wide generalisation, and games like Half-Life, System Shock, Deus Ex, Fallout 3 and Metroid Prime all prove that a first-person view can be used effectively in high-quality and surprisingly original titles, and each of the games I've listed would be worse if played in a different way.

I'm sure Kojima can put together a high-quality FPS with many original ideas that uses the perspective well. Kojima never makes a game if someone else is already developing something very similar, and I'm sure he's not dropping his standards to appeal to a new audience.

in a perfect world making an fps (or an rpg or whatever other kind of game) would just be another way to get your vision across. People kind of over complicate it when they go on tirades about how this or that genre isn't worthy, or that they don't like a whole genre due to a few bad experienced with a handful of games and they seem to grossly generalize the games in certain genres. Fact is no matter what genre you look at, the majority of the games in it will be mediocre to bad. There are gems in every genre, it just depends on how hard you want to look. <-- generalization, but it's true so I don't care if it's a bit hypocritical of me.

I don't think it's a problem with the general quality of FPS games, but the lack of innovation within the genre. Since we've had 3D FPS games that allow us to look in all directions, not much has really changed within the genre. These games often have very similar settings, too. It's difficult to get enthused unless a game looks like it's offering something unique.

The same can be said for pretty much all styles of games, there hasn't been much innovation (thats not to say there hasn't been any, however) at all in the past 2-3 years regardless of genre, it's basically been the same shit with prettier graphics (for the most part).

True that. I've honestly had enough of those third person over the shoulder shooters. 90% of the time you shoot aliens too. I don't want to shoot aliens anymore.
