what exactly makes Kojimas games so great ?

Post by damasch »

I'd like to ask what exactly makes Kojimas games so cool. What do you like about them so much ?

I can't say much because I only played 3 of his games (MGS1/2 / a little bit Boktai1) , but I was so impressed when I first played MGS1... I was so impressed, by the plot It was soo exciting on the one hand and on the other hand it was funny as hell and had / still has , a very interesting story to tell. Same for MGS2. The characters all have their own pasts and stories to tell and so you can identify yourself with them. Of course that isn't necessary for a video game, but that's why I love Hideos games. He puts so much "love"(wrong word, I can't find the right one) into every part of his games. I didn't see anything like this in other people's video games. It's so wonderful that games can make you think about real life, even though they are just fiction.).

I wish there were more Koima-like people out there.... lol

anyways.... whatt do you like about his games ?

In my case it is very simple... attention and depth of detail, expansion of the game universe by introduction of "irrelevant" elements (again, attention to detail), and background information (once again...).

It is a common trend in all of his games, adn you can feel his touch when events you did at the beginning of the game affect some other part in irrelevant but great depth, just like in Snatcher when you do a game over just at the beginning or spend the cash at Outer heaven, or in Metal Gear Solid 2 by using "diazepam" (can't recall the name) as Solid Snake and later calling Snake as raiden, or in the same game staring at the toilet on the women's bathroom and calling Rose/Colonel, which adds one line to the Colonel ones while at Arsenal...

Creating a personal experience.

I am not saying those are the specific details I love, just that those are examples of the depth in creating a real world in there... appart from giving the characters the same treatment, as well as to the gameplay elements.

Interaction with the player is very important, too. Whether it's being told to turn up the volume to hear a timebomb, or having your controller become posessed, it always seems to have a great effect and grabs your attention. The game starts to play with you, rather than have you play it.

There's a constant sense of humor in there, too, which never gets too out of control, but can be really fantastic when it works. Gillian and MetalGear in the Runaway Turbocycle is one of the most memorable scenes i've ever played, and distracting guards with soft porn is great experience.

Kojima also has a great need to experiment, which quite often works out for him. Who else would force you to play a game outside? Wonderful.

I just feel much more involved when playing a Kojima game than any other, and mastering each one is something that really entertains me.

His games are so compelling to replay. No matter how many you play them, they don't really get dull. I can't even begin to imagine how many times I've played MGS1 or MGS2 in my lifetime.
