Kojima denies Uwe Boll MG movie rumors

Post by Marc »

On the latest Hidechan, Hideo said, "That rumor is completely untrue, you can relax."

Ha, he must think his movies suck, too.

Did Kojima deny a movie is being planned/worked on, or did he just deny that Uwe Bowl will have anything to do with it?

That the movie is even being planned, as well.

I figured Kojima wouldn't let Uwe Boll do an MGS movie.

In fact, I bet Kojima never lets a Metal Gear movie be made.

Kojima has stated in the past that even though he feels that Metal Gear is best as a game he would be fine with a movie being made. He just said that he would not be interested in producing the movie or anything like that.

I think if the right people ask if they can do it, he'll let them. Until then nothing's being done about it.

Uwe Boll is the most preposterous film-related name I've heard since Rip Torn.

That's too bad. I'd actually enjoy seeing Uwe Boll's rendition of Metal Gear. I don't think any of you can deny you'd want to see it either, regardless of its quality.

And at least it would shut the fanboys up who continue to plead for a film.

The only director for a Metal Gear Solid film is Mamoru Oshii. Anyone who appreciates the artistic advantages of an animated film in bringing to life Kojima's material should not deny Oshii is the sound choice for the job.

It's interesting that you would say that...

However I find that in terms of a Metal Gear Movie the artistic qualities of the film would be bled out of it in the end. The best thing you can hope for is that if a movie is ever made it stays out of the hands of Japanese directors simply because they tend to make there films more true to Japanese styles. Metal Gear in general is mostly about America, therefore an American director with experience in action and well delivered dialog and developed story lines should get the job. Oshii would take the story and turn it into a artistic sci-fi piece just like Ridely Scott would. John Carpenter (god bless him) would probably not be able to make it because he doesn’t have the directorial skill to pull off a story line of Metal Gear Solid's size.

I personally prefer the Japanese style. I'm sure some people would want to see an American director handle the kind of overblown action sequences we're used to seeing in the Metal Gear series, but I don't think an American director could take the deeper themes to heart the way the Japanese do. It's partly cultural, as you just don't see that kind of intellectualism in very many American films the way you do in Japan. I can imagine had Ghost in the Shell been just another American action film, it likely wouldn't have delved very deeply into the philosophical areas that film ponders.

You've never seen a George A. Romero movie, have you? He makes a lot of horror movies that are generally viewed as trashy (he did the original Night of the Living Dead), but his movies are extremely deep if you feel like delving into them. Not many people have really heard of him from what I understand, but he's very revered among hardcore cinema fans.

I'd say that MGS wouldn't be too hard a project for a Jaanese director. The games concentrate on the reasons behind war, and the people behind it, rather than the explosive fights.

EDIT- Oh, and even though they have no new info, SPOnG have a pretty amusing write-up on all this- http://news.spong.com/article/9626

Honestly, who hasn't heard of Romero? I'd hardly call him of all people underground. Romero, along with Hitchcock and possibly Clouzot, are responsible for the new wave of horror films you see nowadays, and is most definitely an undenied talent. I don't think many cinema fans would consider him trashy, but conservative types would certainly frown upon the wanton amounts of gore in his films. But he's only one of many great directors who were liberal in their gritty depictions of violence. Sam Peckinpah was another for instance, who didn't shy away from showing violence in its truest form, though few would deny his greatness either.

So yes, I've heard of Romero. He's one of my favorite directors (if you couldn't tell).

Ah. See, where I live, Romero films are pretty much considered smut (and thus, I'm considered a dangerous smut-watching waste-person, which is ironic for reasons I'm not going to go into right now)... sorry about that.

Given Boll's latest attitude towards his critics, it's made me wonder how a boxing match between Boll and Kojima would go. As much as I love Kojima, there's no doubt he'd fit the stereotype of the puny wimp going against the gigantic bully and getting the shit kicked out of him in the process. Still, I bet it'd be a damn entertaining "fight".
