Post Overlapping Kojima games?
I was just wondering if we could make a list of all the times different Kojima series overlap? It always interests me when he does this, so I thought other fans may appreciate a list of every reference to another series in each Hideo Kojima game. The list has grown considerably since it started, but there are still many games left to investigate. If you've noticed anything that isn't on this list that you think may be suitable, feel free to mention it in a reply.

====SPOILERS BELOW====
(If you don't want a speciffic game's plot spoiled for you, please don't read the references that relate to them)

Nice thread, although I can't really think of anything you haven't covered. I hadn't realised that the MGS radar shutting off in certain areas was a Snatcher reference - is SNOW-9 mentioned then?

Heh, I should have expected a super-comprehensive post from Snatcher.

I think Nastasha mentions it if you call her with a Chaff Grenade equiped. I think Mei Ling mentions it when describing how the Radar works, and Campbell explains why you can't use the CODEC in the area you walk through before the fight with Ocelot.

I just remembered another, too.

MetalGear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Boxes with the Zone Of the Enders logo can be found on the Big Shell. Snake can even hide in one.

I'm pretty sure that in one of the ZOE games someone says something like "So you're the Big Boss, huh?", but I can't be sure. I heard the line and it immediately made me think of MetalGear. Can someone tell me if I'm right about this?

EDIT- Turns out I was thinking of Mika introducting Benson Cunningham in Snatcher.

How'd you manage to spot that one? It couldn't have been very noticable.

It certainly is very noticeable:

http://junkerhq.net/Snatcher/MGS4/

And seeing that again gives us:

- Boktai reference in the MGS4 trailer (the Otenko Icon)
- Some of the techniques used by Django (knocking walls) are a slight reference to Metal Gear
- Link's stealth in Wind Waker.. oh wait ^^ (I loved that)

I've been tempted to include references from non-Kojima games. For instance, when you meet a particular boss in Silent Scope 2 (or 3, I can't remember) he says "It's time to play Metal Gear!" (this level is set in a snowy area). The only problem is there's a whole bunch of games influenced by MGS, so any sign of stealth in a game can be seen as a reference. It's a shame because there's a few glaringly obvious ones out there (Mesal Gear Solid for example).

There's also a few things I'm a little unsure of.

In MGS: Special Missions (or VR Missions, or even Integral for that matter) the final mystery level takes place in a carpeted area and highly decorated room. Is this a reference to Snatcher, or even Policenauts? It reminded me a little of Benson's office (especially considering you have to investigate it at the end of Act 2).

In Snatcher, Napoleon mentions a "Mr. Big" who is a "Boss of drug trafficking.". A reference to MetalGear's Big Boss?

Noticable when magnifying the image perhaps, but not so much for those of us who didn't analyze every frame of the trailer.

I agree that if you are not looking fro stuff, you'l probably miss it.. but since the desktop is something with tons of information, it was the first place to look at and press pause, when searching for information.

But that is not a magnified image, it is simply a crop of a frame from the game taken from the trailer that is just at 720p... 25% less than the resolution of the final game.

On a complete difefrent note, and speaking frmo the spin off topic regarding games that reference Kojima's work.. I loved the following, taken from Segagaga (a game where you have to erscue a dying Sega and gain share of the market by creating games, this is the cover of one such fictional games)

( The Kanji in the back are 小樽... but I don't know what it is, just that it is a noun)

I do like the better unofficial references. Playing as Grey Fox in Wai Wai Racing (Konami Krazy Racers) is particularly memorable. I'd like to play Neo Kobe 2045 Speed King sometime, too.

Policenauts

In the PC98 version, Victor has a bottle of sunscreen in his office. Jonathan looks at it in a way that's reminiscent of Gillian when he sees sunscreen in Freddy Nielsen's apartment. He notes a "familiar logo" (which he can't place). Then Victor explains he got it sent there from Earth.

There's also a sign in the intro with the word QUEEN on it.

I'm not familiar with the full details, but I'm not sure if the 'QUEEN' sign is reference to the hospital in Snatcher or if it's just coincidence. Someone might need to clear that up for me. I can add the other, staight away, though.

EDIT- I haven't seen the scene myself, so can you tell me if the logo is the sign of Neo Kobe? (just for sake of seeing how much I need to include)

The logo on the sunscreen is supposed to be the same one on the one in Snatcher - the Konami logo sideways (or however it is).

That's the Joy Division (Plato's Cavern) logo.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Meryl wears a "bullet earring" (though this time on her right ear, while her Policenauts version wore it on the left one). (Policenauts reference)
Raiden's exoskeleton was created by Tokugawa Heavy Industry (the name's written on the helmet). (Policenauts reference)

Does anyone think I should include references from different MetalGear canons? For example, Jack being the star of MGS2 (Ghost Babel) and the "Koppelthorn Engine" in Substance (Ghost Babel, again). I mean, they're practically different series', they just have a few of the same characters.

Please do. I'm interested in as many cross-references as you can dig up.

I added those two, but I'm sure there'll be more if I really think about them. I did consider whether the ability to have your CODEC memorise numbers and Fox turning into a sort of cyborg in MGS were references to Snake's Revenge, but then I remembered I was strictly keeping to games that Kojima worked on.

Metal Gear Ac!d²
* Snake must infiltrate the StrateLogic (SaintLogic in the North American version) research facility.
The name "StrateLogic Inc." appears during the boot up sequence of Scott Dolph's computer in MGS2 (you can read it here : http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/metal_gear_solid_2_codec.txt).

Interesting they changed that.. a lot of missed references by current translators, aren't there?

What I don't get is how Ryan Payton said he was "busy proofreading the MGA2 script" one time in his North American report on the Japanese Hidechan, yet it's still full of mistakes.

I have some other references.

MG2
*When Campbell introduces Kasler, he tells Snake, "We'll pick up the tab for the info... just don't ask him about whale cuisine..." This is a reference to Snatcher, to how Gillian asks Napoleon where he can find a place that serves whale meat, but as it was changed in Snatcher to buffalo meat in the English version and the translator didn't change it in MG2 to match it, the reference became lost.

ZOE
*There is a Goddard EMPS lying in the parking lot at the beginning of the game.

MGS3
*There are multiple lines taken straight from previous games. For example, outside Groznjy Grad (sic), The Boss says, in the Japanese version, "Yatsu wa kanarazu kuru" which is word for word what Liquid says at the start of MGS1 while standing on the elevator, though the English translations differ. There's also Snake's "Kept you waiting, huh?" at the beginning if you select "I like MGS2". Also Boss's "There's only room for one Boss... and one Snake..." I'm sure there are more.

- Naked Snake : You're pretty good. (also said by Ocelot in MGS1)

- Ocelot : You were lucky. We'll meet again. (also said in MGS1)

- Ocelot : I've been waiting for this ! (also said by Liquid in MGS2)

- Eva: Snake, is there anyone you like? Someone special?
Snake: I've never been interested in other people's lives.
- Meryl : Is there anyone you like?
Snake : I've never been interested in anyone else's life...

- Naked Snake: A name means nothing on the battlefield. After a week, no one has a
name.
- Solid Snake : Name means nothing on the battlfield.
