Sorry to bump a dead topic, but I must mention one thing I noticed during MGS2; there is a reference to Snatcher when Vamp calls Fortune 'Queen' all the time. If this was a waste of your time, I am sorry, but I tried. 8-[

Sorry to be blunt, but I really doubt that's a reference to Queen's Hotel in Snatcher. An underlying theme in MGS2 is some characters' relation to chess pieces and playing cards. Some bosses move like chess pieces (I can't remember which relate to which, though), while Solidus is supposed to be a King, Fortune a Queen, Raiden (obviously) a Jack, while Snake is the "Ace in the hole".
No problems about bumping this, though. I find the topic quite interesting.

Yeah, I was just really plucking at straws saying that really. I think you guys pretty much made such a good job of spotting them; you got them all!

I'm not sure about that. Besides, Kojima's put a lot of them in MGS4 (judging by early trailers), so there's likely to be a lot more to come (anyone spotted anything new in MPO yet, btw?)

Darn! I wish I had MPO. No PSP you see; my brother and mum wanted a DS; oh well.

Also, I agree, MGS4 looks set to have loads of Snatcher and Policenaut's references, which I look forward to.

Oh yeah, is it me, or does Modnar look just like Liquid Snake in the picture in the church?

Just you. Liquid looks much tougher and less boyish.

And Mei Ling and Mika Slayton?
And Liquid's coat is similar to that of Gillian's.

Wasn't Mei Ling designed after a japanese actress? i forgot the name but there definitly was a resemblance. I'll see if I can find her again.

Now that you mentioned it...I've always wondered what's with the coats, in MGS most of the FOXHOUND members wore them and that's the same for Vamp in MGS2.

I think Gillians coat was just a reference to Blade Runner, (And not the only one.) it's a long time since I've seen the film and I don't remember it well, but as far as I know the main character, or at least some of the characters wore those coats. So even if the FOXHOUND coats are references to Gilians coat, they're basically references to Blade Runner. And since coats are perfect for the winter season, the coat itself is a reference to the winter. And the winter is part of nature...earth and stuff...so wouldn't it have been the best Blade Runner coat reference if Gilian and the FOXHOUND members would've been naked, as a reference to the Blade Runner coats, which are a reference to coldness, which is a reference to the winter, which is a reference to nature, which is a reference to being naked?

Here's a possible reference: in MPO, the first soldier you capture is called Jonathan (at least for me he was). The others I've captured so far don't have normal names like that (Eel, Porcupine, Dalmatian).

Plucking at straws again; Johnny's sneeze in MGS, might be a reference to Napoleon in Snatcher and Snow-9 of course too?

Due to the spelling (J-O-N rather than J- and the context, I'd assume that was a reference. I'd rather see it for myself before I could make a judgement on it, and add it, though. My copy is being shipped from Canada, so it'll probably be a while before I decide whether to put it up.

Even if it is, it's too subtle a reference to even bother noting. Oh, and don't you mean Snow-9?

Edited, oh dear, what a horrible mistake

I'd be interested to know if Hideyuki Tanaka plays "Jonathan" in MPO...

By the way, in my second playthrough the first soldier I picked up was from a completely different area and he was also called Jonathan. Add that to every other soldier being named after an animal (except the unique characters like Snake and others), and I think it's very possibly a deliberate reference.

I'll agree with you, based on the description, and add it.

I haven't seen it mentioned yet, but in MGS2 isn't MG Ray's cockpit HUD boot-up sequence the same as those for policenauts? (It's visible when Ocelot hops in Ray in the Tanker story)

Another MPO reference: the password to unlock Cunningham is JUNKER.

^

The obvious same name as the Chief, also.

Also in MGS2 when you are uploading the photos to Otacon in the Tanker chapter; for a brief moment before Otacon pops up when you are logging in, you will see a directory line that says something like; "c:policenauts" before ending with Otacon's ugly little drawing appearing discussing how good the photos were.

Some more MPO trivia: the actor who plays Cunningham in the Japanese version, Yusaka Yara, plays Gillian in Snatcher.

I added that before you told me. I also added the references to characters from the AC!D series.

87th, have you added DGN1? If you go to page 135 and zoom in behind Otacon, there's a poster of the cover of the 3DO version of Policenauts, under the library entry JAPANIMATION.

I hadn't. Thanks for that!

EDIT-
I've been playing Integral again, today. Do you think I should include the Staff CODEC number as a reference to the ability to read messages from staff on the videophone in Snatcher, or are those too unconnected?

Hmm... The thing is, they're slightly different. In Integral, you have no control over whose message comes up, while in Snatcher you can specifically go for certain employees, can't you? I'd call it more of a similiar feature than a reference.

Found those on Wikipedia :

- The city of Chernoton where the "Catastrophe" occurs is the original target of the nuclear warhead in Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid.

- Additionally, in an early version of MGS3's script, The Boss also wore goggles during the battle at the end of the game, and the flowers in the field where the battle takes place were going to be poppies, the plant featured heavily in Policenauts.
