Post Metal Gear Remix v1.995, Metal Gear (MSX) Translation
Hi!

I am the coder for the Metal Gear Remix project. I'm trying to recover some of my old logins to get the word out that I have a new, final, release for the project. I revisited this, because I was feeling nostalgic during this pandemic shut down and I've had plenty of time to put some work in.

First, I'm sorry to anyone who experienced the epilogue bug with the 1.9 patch. The message was still in the game, but the pointer in the array was for the wrong address. Good news is that I fixed it in v1.91, and I have a new release for the project, version 1.995. I've done a full play through and everything is working nicely. Unless there's some other bug or issue, it will be the final release. I have sent an update to romhjacking.net for their entry on the Metal Gear Remix translation, but it will be in review for some time, I think. I will also be sending it to some other sites as I attempt to recover old logins.

I am hosting the patch on Google Drive at:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1GITxcuTdekOX50kg-6DU1um0-xRvTnh2

A readme is included and the patch works like the others, with an IPS patcher. Aside from the bug fix, the script has been fleshed out and re-edited. Space limitations with previous versions, and the time it took to do edits and tests, meant that language was always parsed for brevity. I've been able to edit the script in such a way that it comes off much more naturally to English speakers. It's true to Kojima's work and is a more enjoyable experience overall now. I'm really proud of it and hope that other people can enjoy it.

This is awesome!

First of all, it is great to read you again.

Would you like me to host the patch here at Junker? So you don't rely on third party cloud services that can be limited/shut down/dead links ina few months?

You could also attach them to your post I believe, if not let me know.

Thanks Artemio. It is good to read from you too! My career started just after I finished the patch and just have never had the time or inclination to look back at any of this until now.

I'd love for you to host the patch, yes, thank you! However, it would be a good idea to hold off for a few days. Takamichi got back in tough with me via msx.org and we've already done a bug fix. I'd like to give him time to play through it and see if he spots anything else I missed. That way you only have to set it up once.

Just an update. Takamichi made it to the Tank battle yesterday. So far so good!

We've had some interesting discussions about the structure of the game since the update. As you may know there are four messages that were disabled in the Japanese game when it was developed. A GuillianSeed on msx.org that maintains the game's disassembled code on github has suggested that they may have originally been messages from Pettrovich. Even more interesting is that each of the NPCs that communicate with the player (Big Boss, Schneider, Diane, Jennifer) have an ID in the code related to their frequency etc. It turns out that the Epilogue message after the credits also has this ID, and it's not Big Boss'. It's the ID that matches the disabled messages. There's some discussion that if these messages were edited out during development were Pettrovich's, that he was the original character delivering the Epilogue. Is it possible that Kojima intended Pettrovich to be a villain?

Artemio, I'll admit I've never played Snatcher through. Is Dr. Pettrovich in that game a villain?

Very interesting. This adds fuel to the fire, haha. I believe it is possible to enable these messages in the code, but their content would be purely creative. I enjoy the unique character of Kojima's work too much to mess with it though.

There was some debate going on about the use of "Scope" in the equipment list versus it being called "Binoculars" throughout the script. I've felt, since the start of the project, that it was important to keep the difference since MGS has the same disparity. I started to waver a bit a few days ago, after the discussion. Sure enough, I just started playing MGSV:TPP for the first time and then Ocelot has a line in the first mission that specifically references the Binoculars vs. Scope thing. I cannot tell you how loud I laughed when he said it. That's part of Kojima's flavor in the games, referencing things like this. If I went and changed the equipment list to match the script, it would undermine his humor, and I don't want to do that.

Just an update, Artemio. Takamichi is playing through Japanese Metal Gear to get a feel for some of the context. He's trying to make sure we're spot on with Schneider's death message. I think we've got it all done, but we're gonna make sure.
