Sony have claimed that a Blu-Ray disc should be big enough to hold the text and audio in many different languages, in most games. If that's true, maybe Europe, America and Japan will all get the same version of the game?
And since most games aren't being made with region-encoding anymore, imported games will be in greater demand if games aren't being released around the world at one time. I also hope they for once give us the option of listening to different language tracks.

I wonder if they're going to do English lip synching this time? They'd probably need to include both versions of the cut scenes if they did do a dual language version. That shouldn't be a problem with the size of Blu ray discs, though.

Since it is real time, it is only tiny amounts of data that correspond to the animation of the mouth. In the case of prerendered stuff, they usually never redo the thing anyway...

So you mean the cut scenes get stored as one base file with multiple smaller sub files that define facial movement for each language? Have there been any games with real time cut scenes and more than one selectable language track before?

Yeah, I can understand why they don't redo facial movement for CG, but I don't see the excuse for real time scenes, except laziness. If they claim time as an issue, they could have whoever is translating the game translate the non-real time text first. Any small adjustments caused by the influence of in-game text could then be made afterwards.

Yes in real time, and also textures and all the information is stored in such a way that it can be accessed independently. I believe that nowadays all the info for mouth movement is stored along all the motion from the models, but it is a trivial matter to separate this kind of stuff if done from design.
Osiris wrote:Have there been any games with real time cut scenes and more than one selectable language track before?
Onimusha 1 did, but it was mainly CG. I'll have to play it again in both languages to see if the language selection has any influence over the few real time cutscenes.

Hmm, in that case companies have even less of an excuse. :)

You're right, Onimusha 1 did. As I remember, the English voices followed the Japanese lip synching.

I can´t remember how the Lip synching was in Onimusha 1. But i know that the Lip synching in Onimusha Dawn of Dreams isin´t very good. If you switch to the japanese voice track.. Europeans can´t switch to japanese voice track, so they (including me) are stuck with the bad Lip Synching

Half-Life 2's engine has a feature that renders the lip-synching on the fly to make localization easier. All they have to do is run an audio file through the game and the characters make the lip movements themselves, apparently.

Apparently it's going to include Portals, Team Fortress 2, and Half-Life 2 (plus Episodes 1 & 2), so it better be good.

I remember Kojima said he wants to play HL2 but still has his motion sickness problem. The physics in it are just insane.

Up until Subsistence, none of his games would have given him a problem. They all had fixed overhead views (MG) or were still-based (Snatcher, Policenauts).

Possibly a bit off-topic, but there's a few Promo copies going on eBay, now. The double-CD case reminds me of European Snatcher. I just won one.

It says 4-discs... I'll tell you if it is once it arrives.

As much as I'd like to think Saga, or even some kind of press exclusive (bribing) content is included, my guess is that it's just a typo.

Oh well, it'll still look nice alongside UK Snatcher and Saturn Policenauts.
