So I'm curious, has anyone purchased any of the new 20th anniversary editions (or the entire box-set)? I'd like to know if the games feature English or Japanese voice acting, as hearing the games in their original language would be the only feature that would compel me to pick up these new releases.

They're all the Japanese-language versions. No English subtitles, though.

Good enough. I know the translations both forward and backwards by now.

I was considering getting it (In fact, that's a major understatement- I was definite about getting it), but then I ran out of money. Now, it doesn't seem worth it for some alternate voice acting and a made-at-last-second title screen for MG1+2.

Another question -- is the edition of MGS2 included Subsistence or just Sons of Liberty?

It's just Sons Of Liberty with a free copy of The Document of MetalGear Solid 2 (I think it contains some TV commercials that didn't appear in the western versions).

Meh.... then I guess MGS1 is the only one really worth buying.

If you ask me, the VA in MGS3 is far better overall. I like playing both versions just for the voice changes, you get some plusses and some negatives from both sides (the Japanese VA seems to be more consistent for me).

I've already got both Japanese versions of MGS3, so the 20th Anniversary MGS3 doesn't interest me in the slightest.

Ah, I see. I just thought you were saying that you hadn't played any of the Japanese versions of the games. My bad.

These are all the Japanese versions of the MG games I have-

MetalGear (Famicom)
MetalGear 2: Solid Snake
MetalGear Solid: Integral
MetalGear Solid 2: Substance
MetalGear Solid 3: Snake Eater (Premium Pack version)
MetalGear Solid 3: Subsistence (First edition- includes Existence)

I'd like some Japanese VA versions of MGS1+2 sometime, but I'm between jobs and moving out of my house, so I shouldn't think about it just yet.

Wow, you got MG2: SS!!
That's just awesome, where/when did you get it and how much did you pay for it?

It's my favourite game of all time, so I had to get it. My first copy was unboxed from eBay, and cost £50. My second (current) is boxed, bought from Mandarake in Den Den Town, Osaka, and comes with the Konami registration sheet. It was 10,000 yen (£44.25).
I recently sold my unboxed copy for £32.00 on eBay.

hmm... strange, i've heard that MG2:SS is one of rarest MSX titles available.
And it usually costs more... well it seems that i've been wrong about this.

I have to get this too, and also the first MG. (i only have NES version)

It seems it being released on cell phone and included with Subsistence has reduced the worth of the original MSX version considerably. At least now that it's been made more available, the MSX version is really only good as a collectible or for those die-hard purists who can't live with the slight changes made to the updated versions.

Actually, the collector in me finds a sort of sadness in that, even though the gamer in me is just happy the game is available to him in a playable (and affordable) version.

My original copy was bought when there were two copies on eBay, one was boxed, accepted Paypal and international orders. The other was unboxed, only accepted postal orders and only delivered within the UK. It was obvious that unboxed one was going to go for cheaper, so I set my targets to get that one. This was around 2 years before the mobile phone port was announced, I believe.

As for my boxed copy? Prices in Den Den Town are extremely competitive. I got my barely used, boxed 60GB PS3 for roughly £170/$340/¥38,000. You'll find several copies of even the rarest games if you look hard enough. One shop (Game Tanteidan) had a full shelf of Virtual Boy titles. Another (Big Tiger) had a full wall of Neo-Geo AES games. If I bought a decent number of those and sold them on eBay, they could have paid for my trip. I was more interested in buying stuff for myself than trying to make money, though. I actually found a few copies of MG2:SS, but the one in Mandarake met my price vs quality requirements the best.

I don't know why the copy I sold did so shit on eBay. Maybe because I had only sold two items on eBay before that? I don't know. I'm not bitter, as I didn't need the game anymore, but I do believe it should have sold for a higher price.

Another question before I decide to buy: Is MGS3 the Subsistence version or just the standard version? I know they didn't include any of the Snake VS. APE stuff in the collection, but does it at least have the improved camera?

I understand that it's disc 1 of Subsistence. Disc 2 is cut down though (it only includes MG1+2, instead of MGO and everything).
