Who "cheated" when playing Metal Gear?
Who "cheated" when playing Metal Gear?
I just wanted to see, out of all the people who have beaten the original Metal Gear, how many have used cheats or walkthroughs. I myself (shamefully) used a walkthrough because backtracking wasn't doing me any good, and I was looking for the compass. I didn't use it all the way through or anything like that, but I guess I still sorta cheated. Anyway, I guess I was just wondering if anybody else has had problems and had to get outside help to finish the game.

I'm always scared to go view a FAQ because I might see something that'll spoil it for me. Luckily MGS games are pretty linear, although there was one part in MGS4 that frustrated me. In the middle east. After that it was a breeze.

I used a walkthrough for the two original Metal Gear titles, just because I didn't know where I had to go and I kept missing vital items.JimboKudo wrote:I just wanted to see, out of all the people who have beaten the original Metal Gear, how many have used cheats or walkthroughs. Re: Who "cheated" when playing Metal Gear?
I look at guides and stuff after I've completed each title, to see what is unlockable, how to achieve and whatnot. I also look out for guides that offer secrets, like funny codec calls, events etc that happen in each game. There's bound to be something I've missed from each game, they're all so detailed, including Snatcher.
Re: Who "cheated" when playing Metal Gear?
Well, at least I'm not the only one who has used walkthroughs for the original games. I guess it doesn't matter as much since they're stealth/combat games, so it's more about getting from A to B. I'm not very far in MG2, so I haven't used a FAQ for that yet, but we shall see.

I've used a Pro Action Replay on the Playstation version of Meal Gear Solid. It was pretty sweet to jump from the scene before the Darpa Chief to after Snake is capture by Ocelot, and with Meryl's good ending intact.

Re: Who "cheated" when playing Metal Gear?
I used Action REplay MAX infinite health for a good chunk of MGS3 and to beat the last few bosses and to get through the part where you escort EVA. Also I used the infinite Rations cheat(AR MAX) to help beat the metal gear RAYS the first time I played MGS2. I couldn't have beaten the game if I hadn't.
By the way, this is all on very easy mode. How pathetic is that?

Re: Who "cheated" when playing Metal Gear?
What exactly does action replay do? I've heard of it many times, but nobody's ever really explained what it is (mostly since everyone already DOES know). Do you need a computer to use it or what?

Re: Who "cheated" when playing Metal Gear?
An action replay or similar devices are tools used generally to cheat or access unavailable features in a game. What it does, in computer terms, is alter values in memory to ones not predefied or intended by the programmers. For instance, allow health to be 1 million when the max value allowed by the game is 100, thus it is virtually unlimited. Since all values in a game (or computer program for that matter) are numbers, it allows to change any of them. Of course the user is not supposed to use it at that level, but simlpy enter codes or select the desired effect for specific games from a menu.

Re: Who "cheated" when playing Metal Gear?
Although I had the Limited Edition guide a week before the game was released, I was not reading the walkthrough section. And when I started playing the game, I still wasn't looking at the walkthrough UNTIL I got to that fight with VAMP! Man, I could not kill the guy! I kep on repeating the codec message of Otacon, but I just couldn't figure it out... So, with just one quick peek at the walkthrough....I was able to finish the game... #-o

I thought MGS4 was pretty easy. The Japanese version feels even easier too.

Re: Who "cheated" when playing Metal Gear?
I had to use a walkthrough on the first one because, i couldn't find the damn Thermal Goggles since i didn't grab the SOCOM from the back of that truck. And in MGS2... those dogtags were hard to find, lemme tell ya!
And then the long pulse of Zion Dub...
Re: Who "cheated" when playing Metal Gear?
I don't think I found more than a few dogtags. But I plan on buying Substance, so I'll be playing it again soon anyway.
So action replay is kinda like a cheat program? I didn't think that it was so easy to change quantities in modern videogames. Do programmers purposefully leave it open for programs to do so, or is it something that they don't want and just can't do anything about?

Not much can be done about it, if there is software to do it, it will be done. And since there are commercial interests for doing so, it is simply like writing graffiti over a sign, you can do it if you have the resources.
