Ripping the MGS vocal tracks, is it possible?

Post by Kojima Hideo »

Fellow Kojima devotees, I'm new here but I already have a request.
Can someone manage to rip the vocal tracks from the PSX version of MGS in order to create the greatest audio drama ever?

How cool will it be to be able to listen to the vocal tracks whenever, wherever?
I already heard from a member (GirianSeed573) that it can't be done, but won't give up my dream.

I'm a noob myself, but I'm sure that there are enought intelligent people on this forum who can do it.

Am I right, or am I right?
Please let me know if it's possible.
Like I said, I'm no technician myself but I'll help in any way I can, if someone can do this for the community.
Damn!

Look at how the Policenauts translation stalled, but we have it now don't we?

Ah, sorry, in my enthusiasm I read too fast perhaps.

So, who is up for it? There must be someone at this forum who can do it...right?

(On a different matter, I'm ashamed to admit it, but I still must play the translated version of Policenauts. But I really want to play it on my PSX/PS2, but then I first must mod my console or buy an already modded one.)

If we were to rip the vocal tracks from a PSX ISO, then Policenauts would have a fan dub already.

I meant that if it had been easier to rip the vocals from the iso, it would've happened.

Like Girian said, it's not impossible. I bet you that both the PSX version Policenauts and MGS have the same audio format and MGS already has a dub, but I doubt that anyone who doesn't work for a gaming company knows how to dub a game nor extract the vocal tracks.

For the love of...

No, I do believe that someone out there that does rom/iso hacking (not working for a game company) can extract the file, but everyone's too lazy to even look up how to edit an iso file. Actually, I doubt that there's a software for editing files from a PSX game.

You guys are making a big deal out of nothing.

http://snailrush.online.fr/
Here's a link to a program that can play PS Sound Files.
Open up the help menu to see which games are supported.
Metal Gear Solid is on the list.

If you have a .ISO file, you'll need to mount it in a virtual drive.
You'll also need WNASPI.DLL installed on your computer to scan the disc.
I don't know much about it myself so do some research.
SnatcherMkII wrote:Actually, I doubt that there's a software for editing files from a PSX game.
You never know what you can find on the web.
Kojima Hideo wrote:There goes my dream...
Just a tip, I wouldn't go around saying things like that. It sounds amateur and un-professional.
After all, Sometimes it's all in how you present yourself.

I would also reccomend becoming more technically versed and experienced before making such requests.
Being able to contribute (at least in knowledge) is very important to projects.
Dumping requests on people and expecting things to be completed without any imput from yourself doesn't usually end well.

"Study your subject, before closing in for the kill."

It's nothing personal. I'm just trying to make sure you don't get eaten alive on 'the Interwebs'.

You're both right. I'm too lazy and technically not versed.
It was selfish to post such a request, truth is, I was hoping that someone already would have ripped it.

I'm just very enthusiastic because there's some much treasure on this forum, let alone the site itself.

This was a good wake up call though, I will try and put effort in it myself.

No, that's not right, really.
It's I just feel you rushed into this and dind't exacly know what to expect.

You look like you'll shape up into a good community member. :)
You just need some experience, And that is gained from being a part of the community.

Again, I reccomend becoming more technically versed if you wish to take on projects.
You allways need to know at least something about what you're talking about.

Yes, because my own spark has reignited my interest in such a 'cd' to own, I'm looking up some facts right now.

Mind you, I won't lie; I haven't got much time because of my 'real life'.
Just like most people (everyone?) around here who contribute. My respect for these gods is growing every second I'm dwelling on this forum.

How do you do it? :-)

Sorry to double post, but I feel this needs to be said.

A community is always going to have those who converse and discuss and those who work on such projects.
That's how any community is, really. And those two parts need to be in balance with each other.

If a person isn't experienced in the technological side of things, that's okay.
Feedback and Input is allways the other side of the spectrum and is needed for a full community.

If a person wants to take initiative and lead a project, that's great, but does that mean other ideas should be left out? No.
Even proposing ideas is key to get things moving.
Who knows who will have an answer for you. Ideas should be mentioned and considered, even if all that'll happen is them just floating in the air.

Granted, they have to be reasonable.

Basically, What I'm saying is that if you want to take on projects yourself thats fine, if you cannot contribut to a project yourself, proposing ideas and feedback is important too.

Just bee sure to allways present yourself in a polite and respectable manner.
Don't get too excited over thing either. Getting attached and looking like you're depedant is a critical blow to presentation in a community.

Kojima Hideo, I hope you're reading this and take my words to heart, as well as anyone else who will happen to stumble upon my sentiment.

Jonathan, thanks for your feedback, I'll take it into consideration.
For now I have to accept that I belong in the group of community members who take but can't give (yet).

Nevertheless, I contacted some other MGS afectionados and they all like the idea to rip MGS from its vocals.

Too bad that my network doesn't contain technicans and the like. But now I know that the demand is indeed there, I'll find a way to create the ultimate MGS 'radio play'.

Off topic: In the meantime, I think I'll help (if he likes) El_Ash with his script of Snatcher. I read the third act and it's very amusing.

I'm sure he'll allow you to translate the script into Dutch when he's competed the master draft.
Actually, translating Snatcher into other languages sounds pretty cool. :)

Though you need to localize Snatcher the same way Blaustein did (i.e. reverse engineering, customization, etc.).

Hey, guys. I'm new here, but I saw your topic regarding ripping the music from the original MGS game and thought I'd throw in my two cents...

I've kinda always wanted the instrumental tracks from MGS (for example, the scene at the end with Gray Fox, the dialogue between Snake/Meryl after Mantis, etc.), and I recently discovered PSound and cracked the Konami .DAT file with it. I was honestly kinda crushed to find that they're all one track as far as the cutscenes and specific codec files go.... but I've been experimenting on my own and managed to get one or two.

I'd be totally willing to help out on the project if anyone else is interested... Here's a brief example of something i grabbed recently. I just kinda screwed around with removing the vocals, then tried to re-mimic stereo and add an EQ, but I'm definitely not the expert.

I have a few others. if you look at both the english and the japanese versions, the music in cutscenes line up perfectly enough to extract them via subtraction, but then you end up with a weird hybrid of the two voice actors talking over each other.... basically everything I've done so far is possible in Audacity.

Again, if you'd either like more info or for me to lend my services if someone who knows better than I is up for this, feel free!

I think here is your answer:

I just checked the files, it seems complete. Sometimes, music is in the background, but scenes, like the intro scene dialogue is music free.

Sincerely,

Mano
