Bokutai /Megaman Crossover Battle

Post by Rolman »

I just stumbled upon this interesting news, you can connect Boktai 2 and the upcoming Rockman EXE 5 to have Django and Rockman in a battle against Shademan, at least in Japan.

Basically, you need two GBA with wireless adapters (the feature doesn't work with the Link Cable) and a copy of each game, then input a special command in Boktai so that the "Crossover Battle" menu will appear (the Rockman game doesn't need a special command), then the fight begins!

You can check the info directly in Konami's website:

http://www.konamijpn.co.jp/products/zok ... ob_01.html

The second page shows screenshots of how each game's rules apply to the fight.

I saw a screenshot of Megaman Battle Network 4 with Django in it, and was a little confused. Apparently Megaman's also in boktai 2 (it's not out in Europe, yet). Seems a bit of a strange crossover, if you ask me.

That is really interesting in all senses...

What I really wonder is how this came to happen, what kind of approaches and negotiations went in there... It is known that Konami and Capcom help each other out from time to time, although they are "rival" companies I have come to understand that they have the camadery of being on the same industry, the same "side".

Who approched who? Interesting...

There was a lot of talk around a year ago about a Kojima/Mikami collaboration. I wonder if this is what became of that.

I don't think it's a strange crossover. Rockman (the EXE version) and Django share quite a bit of similarities:

The isometric view for exploration (although Rockman uses a different one for battle)
The shooting style (frontal shooting, both acquire different weapons with variable effects to their enemies during their adventures, although Rockman has the gun embedded in his arm)
The genre (Action-RPG)
The target/audience (kids and teens)
The gaming platform (GBA)

Also, the creators of both characters come from a long history in their respective companies, so probably they knew each other for a long time. But Snatcher's questions still remain interesting, nonetheless. Who approached who? What do they get from such a niche thing? After all, the wireless adaptor is not extremely popular, and the cable doesn't work for this particular feature, why?

I can help with some of this stuff.

I've actually done crossover battles. If you want I can post the results of what I did, and how they work.

As for how the crossover started... I've heard a few different stories.

1. Kojima's son is a fan of Rockman.

2. Mikami's child is a fan of Boktai.

3. Both children are fans of the opposite.

This first cameo happened with Django in Rockman exe 4 (Megaman Battle Network 4). After that, Konami and Capcom secretly coded in the Crossover Battles into Boktai 2 and Rockman exe 5. They let the secret out just befor Exe 5's release.

Besides the Crossover Battle, Rockman (Megaman) makes a cameo in Boktai after you beat the game, and enables you to do a special mission. Upon completion of the mission, you get to use the Rock Buster (Mega Buster).

To get the Crossover Battle feature to appear in Boktai 2, you need to input a code. I'll post it later, as it has escaped me.

In crossover battles, both Django and Megaman race to defeat Shademan in their respective game play types. Defeat Shade man first or last the longest to win points. After that the points can be redeemed to get special items in both games.

In Boktai 2, you can get 4 new armors; Rock Power, Guts Power, Blues Power, and Toad Power.

In RM exe 5, you go to an Otenko terminal/vending machine and redeem you points. You can get Django, Django SP, Django DS, Gun Del Sol 1, Gun Del Sol 2, GunDel Sol 3 chips. There are a few other chips, but again, those have escaped me.

There was also a manga that featured both Django and Rockman against Shademan. It was only a special 1 issue by the same artist that does the Taiyou Shounen Django manga.

More later...

Just to clarify- I don't think Shinji Mikami had anything to do with the direct development of Megaman Battle Network, but he could have introduced Kojima to the team (as he is a friend of Kojima and a big name at Capcom).

He doesn't. Mega Man is Keiji Inafune's (of Onimusha) baby.
