Most memorable game trailers?

A forum to talk about stuff that doesn't fit in other categories, such as general Kojima games discussion, other games, etc.

Most memorable game trailers?

Post by Marc »

What are your most memorable game trailers? The ones that really impressed you at the time and still do (to an extent) today? Here are a few of mine. I'll add more as I think of them.

MGS2
I dare say this game really kicked off the phenomenon of movie-like game trailers in video games. I'll never forget how impressed I was not only by the graphical quality but also the attention to detail, especially in the shooting scenes.

Resident Evil (GC)
I'll never forget seeing the updated main hall for the first time... then the lightning started! Wow. This was the game that made me buy a GC. Still looks great all these years later. I was disappointed RE2 and 3 didn't receive the same treatment (maybe even making 2 a little like 1.5 in the process).

Another World/Out of this World
As this was the early 90s, I saw this trailer on a video tape my cousin had. He subscribed to this monthly game magazine on VHS; there were a few of these around back then, but have since died with the times. Anyway, we were both impressed with its vector graphics, and he bought the game as soon as it was available. I got scolded by my aunt for telling him it had arrived, as I wasn't supposed to say anything until he'd finished his homework.

Symphony of the Night
I first saw this in motion on a trailer on an issue of PlayStation Underground. Needless to say I pre-ordered it as soon as I could after seeing it.

Resident Evil 2
What we would call 1.5 today. I nearly forgot this, but remembered about it after doing the above entry. This was also on the PS Underground, only as a hidden trailer this time. I'm still sorry it never came out in some form. It looked like the first game on steriods.

Doom 3
Another technically impressive game. I dare say this ushered in the new wave of PC graphics we've seen over the last few years.

I know I'm forgetting some others. Maybe some of yours will be among them!

Anything by square enix, they have become the gods of CG images.

Aside from the ones already mentioned:

Max Payne - immediately impressed me, bullet time in gaming was created, with great storyline.

Shenmue - I first saw this way back in 1999 on Sky services (didn't have the internet back then), and it took my eye from the moment I saw Ryo walking around in this immersive world, 'FREE' the words said on the screen. I was amazed. I bought the Dreamcast that Christmas along with the game, one of the best decisions of my life!

Silent Hill 2 - looked incredibly chilling, and was incredibly impressed with what I got in the end.

I would have to say that the best game trailer ever is MGS3 TGS 2k4.
Best trailer soundtrack, best directed and just simply... best trailer ever =P

I also loved MGS4's fake trailer too, where they had Snake and Raiden fighting over who's the main character in the next game.

3 and 4's didn't floor me as much as 2's (though the TGS 2005 4 trailer did look pretty damned good).

I agree with Osiris, the MGS2 one had the biggest impact, the ones for 3 and 4 diminished a lot.

Bad Mojo

I love this trailer...its just so...damn cool...one of those most original games I have.

The Longest Journey
http://www.gametrailers.com/umwatcher.php?id=47115

Probably my favorite game after Snatcher.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey
http://www.gametrailers.com/umwatcher.php?id=47024

Not the actual trailer but the music video that plays when you leave it on the title screen. Beautiful music that fits the story perfectly.

Virus
http://www.gametrailers.com/umwatcher.php?id=49864

Once again not the trailer...This is the intro to the japanese Saturn game Virus. I was on my snatcher/policenauts buying spree when I came across another cyberpunk game, so I decided..."What the hell"

I need to get more videos up

It's really just the Kojima Productions trailers, the Grand Theft auto trailers and the Nintendo tech-demos that really stick out in my memory.

That Virus game looks like a rip off of Policenauts (space colony made me think it was). A good looking rip off even at that, how does it play?

It's hard to get into. It's really slow-going, and the save points are sporadic. Text-heavy game too, so it's even harder to enjoy if you don't know Japanese. I got a few hours into it and haven't felt compelled to go back to it. I get the feeling I'd like it even a little if I only had the time to play through it.

It also isn't entirely like Policenauts. There are these 3D first-person dungeon segments with battles. Those are incredibly sluggish.

...yep thats pretty much what I would have said...If it didnt have those shitty dungeons it could be a cool game.

Am I the only one a little sick of hearing about Resident Evil 1.5? Now I've seen the photos and watched some brief clips of it in action, and around the time that the true Resident Evil 2 was released, I could understand why this footage might still have excited people. But nowadays, with as much as the series has evolved -- Christ, even RE3 would've been more advanced by comparison -- there's no point whining over some preliminary demo footage that only accounted for a brief section of the entire game. Now if Capcom decides to remake RE2 -- which they definitely should do -- and design the levels to seem more realistic, which is I assume what enticed so many people about 1.5, I wouldn't have a problem with that. But to continue sensationalizing a game that most never even got to experience is rather ridiculous at this point.

It's an unreleased game from one of gaming's most popular franchises. Of course people are going to be interested. It's also an alternate version of one of the most popular games from the series, so I would have expected people to be very interested in it. On top of that all, it was rumoured to have been around 70% finished when it was scrapped, and with the accessibility of the Sonic 2 prototypes, many are determined to find a leaked beta.

Good point. Why shouldn't I be surprised that people are so excited over some scrapped game footage for an already well-renowned game released some ten years ago? What was I thinking? And maybe they'll find that playable beta version lurking somewhere too. I have a feeling that it's sitting on a shelf along with a three-quarters translated copy of Policenauts.

I didn't claim to believe the rumour. You don't have to be so obnoxious about it.

There's a lot of interest in scrapped games (or at least early versions), and although I doubt people would have rather had RE1.5 than the final RE2, I'm not surprised in the slightest that Resident Evil fans would like to play another official game (albeit an unfinished one).

I think he was referring to how I mentioned it under my RE2 entry. You usually want what you can't have; that's part of it, sure. But I'd still like to play the part that was completed.

Anyway, Missing, please try to be more civil. That's what Snatcher would say if he were here.
