I was in a situation recently were I was pretty badly-off gaming wise. All I had was my laptop and a pathetic wireless internet connection. So I got online and downloaded a bunch of random abandonware games. One of these was a little text-only game called Zork: The great Underground Empire. I enjoyed it very much and decided to track down more games made by the famous IF company, Infocom. I got my hands on as many as I could find and soon discovered that I'd stumbled upon a treasure trove of seemingly cased aside gems that, despite their lack of graphics and sound are some of the most Immersive adventure games I've ever played. Great stories, great puzzles and great writing. All I can say is, check them out. My personal favorites are, in no particular order:

A Mind Forever Voyaging

The Lurking Horror

Trinity

Cutthroats

PlanetFall

Infocom's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy game has been put online by BBC for anyone to play free, and they've added a pleasant interface with some graphics (gasp!). Douglas Adams himself worked closely on the game with Infocom.

Some time ago BBC held a contest to create new graphics for the game. Here is the page of one of the winners with some amusing commentary:
