Last game you completed?
Pretty much a rip on the "last film you watched" thread. List the last game/few games you completed and talk about them. Spoiler tags may be necessary if you want to talk about the plot.
I'm feeling particularly proud of myself as I completed both "skate." and "Grim Fandango" today (I'm unemployed at the moment and a terrible procrastinator), so that inspired me to make the topic.
Grim Fandango was a really good adventure game, but I don't see why people see it as Lucasart's best. The controls annoyed the hell out of me, and some of the solutions to the puzzles were a little too obscure, even by Tim Schafer's standards. I don't see what was so great about the ending either (unless you include the final few moments of gameplay as parts of an ending). Still a very good game though. I'm glad that I didn't give up on it.
As for skate? I've read plenty of reviews for it, and they all seem to say the same thing; very good first-effort from EA, but there's a lot of obvious flaws. I have to agree with that. The "flick it" control system and design of San Vanelona are wonderful. After playing the game with very few breaks for 4 days, I'm still finding new areas and lines, and I'm sure that will continue for a long time. The control system works well in simulating the actions required to move a skateboard, but some tricks are too similar. This wouldn't be too much of a problem, but some goals require you to perform speciffic tricks. I generally tried to avoid anything that asked me to do a 360 flip. There's not a lot of fun in completing the goals, but you have to finish them if you want to unlock some of the better areas in the game (including the incredible "Mega Compound"). Online play so laggy it's not worth bothering. Just exploring and enjoying the skateboarding simulation is great though. I don't see myself ever buying another Tony Hawk's game.

Killer 7. And I would like to thank everyone very very very very much for advising me to buy it. It helped me coin a term hahah~; devo-to-evo games lol~
Mr. Suda51 is a unique guy... It'd take some space to properly give the run-down this game diserves, and I don't have the patience for it now. Maybe later.
I'll say one thing; those who give praise to this game aren't kidding.
Edit: Oh yeah, and Mr. Suda is perfect for Snatcher. En fin.

Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
Having been a long standing fan of the series, I was initially lost for words when I played RE4 for the first time, back on the humble Gamecube. I didn't like how much the mechanics had changed. The misleading camera angles were gone, ammo was now in plentiful supply, and worst of all - Umbrella was no more. But despite this, I enjoyed the game. It may not be traditional RE, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. The story is weak, but the action has been bumped up a notch and the inclusion of interactive cutscenes makes the game an involving experience.
However, as with most Capcom products, RE4 has seen light on a plethora of different consoles. The Gamecube version, while harbouring the best graphics of the group, lacked special features or extras - all we got was the rather lacklustre Assignment Ada and the admittedly fun Mercenaries. The PS2 version has a bevy of extras, but the graphics were reduced quality, the cutscenes were now FMVs and the character models were a bit jagged. The Wii Edition however, takes the best of both worlds and combines them with a fluid control system which, while difficult to use at first, ultimately makes things a little more 'hands-on' than its predecessors.
In short, even though it's an old game, it's been given a fresh set of clothes and can easily be described as the definitive version of RE4. My main qualm however is that there's no features exclusive to the Wii, so you're practically getting the same game that came out a few years back, but if you don't own the game then it's worth picking up.

Braindead 13.
Um, well, the artwork is pretty neat. But apart from that, what can I say? It's just another Dragon's Lair game. Personally, I like it because it is humorous and as well as being one of the most violent animations ever created, definitely. It has a novelty about it that makes you play through it again, to see what else could have happened. It's really great to see an animation that isn't afraid of making violence rather humorous, and that's coming from a person who hates excessive violence in fiction, in general. It's really just wacky fun, but nothing else at all. I'd rate it a seven out of ten, since it is enjoyable, but extremely difficult to figure out what you are supposed to do, at times (as it never tells you, unlike Dragon's Lair for the CD-i; where it flashes the direction you must go, at the given time).

I got fed up waiting for the patch, so I started playing Lethal Weapon for NES. I must say, they really faithfully simulated the blood pumping action in the scene where Riggs and Murtaugh Killed Everyone In The Park.
Why is it that Rog is always backup when Riggs drowns/gets eaten by a shark/takes in an inhuman number of bullets? Why can't I have my awesome Capcom/Sega two player action beat 'em up with gut busting humour!!?? Ocean, YOU SUCK!!!

Halo 3 on legendary >_<
Im playing persona 3 now. Now that is one disturbing game. Basically its a dungeon crawler/date simulator. You play the role of some highschool student in the day and at night you fight "shadows" in the "dark hour". Also you summon these avatars to cast spells.... The disturbing part is the way you summon these avatars. The characters have these things called "evokers", which are basically guns... and to summon the avatars the characters shoot themselves in the head <_<

The worst part about Jack Thompson is that we have the same first name and the same initials... That last i completed was: Halo 3.
Single player was disapointing, and the story was kinda ok-ish. I know Halo 3 got a lot of 10 and perfect scores, but if ya ask me, it derseve a 9, it's good, but not as great as the reviewers makes you believe...

That is called hype and marketing... I only played it for 10 minutes or so when a friend brought it and it seemed like just another FPS. For me, that is just an 8.
From the mathematical perspective, consciousness might be regarded as a second derivative of sensation.

That's my qualm with the Halo series, it never really does anything different or new for the FPS genre. Once you've played one, you've played them all. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed playing through the original with a friend on two-player cooperative, but after playing Gears of War, there really is nothing left for it anymore. The storyline is your typical cliche, "humans versus aliens", etc.
Just to clarify, I'm no console fanboy but Halo delivers very little to me.

Well, Halo was solid entertainment to me, simply because the multiplayer offered a lot of laughs with my friends. Still does. As far as campaign mode is concerned. I enjoyed the mass crossover of humans, aliens, zombies and machines all battling one another. In Halo 2, that aspect is all lost, as well as the gameplay in campaign being incredibly short. Not to mention that certain changes in gameplay are awful. Halo 3 is a step up again, bringing back the melee action that the first did pretty damn well, along with the certain epic feel I had about it all.
I agree though, Halo is the most overrated gaming series of all time, the ten out of ten scores are stupid, the gaming press just either buy into the hype or know the developers as friends, and wish to push the product to sell well, for their benefit. I bet some reviewers may even see it as a way of gaining access to a job in game development, wouldn't surprise me. Not forgetting the fact that there are many certain fanboys who would be 'crushed' by the term 'opinion' and not liking the game. Oh my gosh, do people really not like that game? Oh dear, blighty God! We're all doomed, now! IGN just gave a bad review for the game of the year, oh noes!!!1 *Angry fan responses commence, by the bucket load*
Those fans really need to get a grip on reality. But eh, as much as it sounds like it does, it doesn't bother me that much, just a little.

On the contrary, it does a lot of things poorly where other FPSes manage. The original Halo has, and I stand by this, some of the worst level design of any FPS I've ever played (and I come from a background in PC gaming, so I've played my fair share).Synthoid wrote:That's my qualm with the Halo series, it never really does anything different or new for the FPS genre.
In between working part-time and studying I haven't had much time to play any games, but most recently I completed Bioshock (PC version), and I'm not quite sure what to say that hasn't already been said. It's was very very hyped and didn't live up to the expectations as far as I think. Gameplay is essentially the same as that of System Shock 2 (but with some elements removed, to scale down the difficulty I imagine) and that in itself might be fine to some extent as SS2 had pretty interesting gameplay, but it's been eight years since then and you'd imagine they'd have found ways to work around or entirely eliminate problems SS2 had. Not so, they're still there - the whole slew of side-tracking quests which ultimately end up feeling like fodder as they contribute little or nothing to developing the game's story line (the whole Cohen-thing is a good example of this. I ultimately felt it was just a pointless time waster) are still there. Level design was also rather inconsistent - it gradually degraded to the point where in one of the areas towards the very end I was getting flashbacks from playing Final Doom, not a good thing for a game developed in 2007.
There are other things I could complain about as well, such as how I find the story exposition (which is handled primarily through audio logs - snippets of audio recorded by various NPCs you'll find throughout the game) rather stilted, but it's been done already by a number of people. Suffice to say, it was a fairly decent game and I'd take it over Halo 3 any day, but still nowhere close to a number of more complex FPSes (or FPS/RPG hybrids, take your pick) I've played over the years.

Eternal Sonata. I finished it playing it "co-op" withmyu girlfriend, playing during weekends mainly. It was a great game, althout too easy as an RPG. It's main strengthgs are its visuals, character development and music.
