Your gaming history?

Post by 87th »

Got the idea from an interview in GamesTM, thought it would make a good idea for a topic here.
Here's a questionnaire to fill in about your experience and preference in video games. Feel free to make your answers as long or short as you like-

What was the first video game you played?
What was the first gaming system you owned?
What was the first game you bought for yourself?
First games system you bought for yourself?
Have you made any friends through your interest in gaming?
What is your most treasured game-related memory?
What is your favourite game of all time?
Do you play games as much as you did when you were younger?
How much has video games affected your life?

Here's my answers:
What was the first video game you played?
"The New Zealand Story" for the Atari ST. It came in a triple pack of Taito platform games, alongside Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands which I played shortly after.
What was the first gaming system you owned?
According to my parents, we had a Commodore 64 in the house before I was old enough to play it. The Atari ST was the first I actually got to play.
What was the first game you bought for yourself?
"Sonic The Hedgehog 3" for the Sega Megadrive. My parents had bought me Sonic & Knuckles the previous Christmas, so relied on a friend's copy of Sonic 3 to play the full game for a long time. Eventually, I found someone selling their copy for under £10 in the local newspaper. I personally phoned and visited the house to collect it, which was quite a big deal considering I was only around 7 or 8 years old at the time.
First games system you bought for yourself?
The Nintendo Gameboy Pocket. I sold my Megadrive to get a Gameboy, as I was excited about "MetalGear: Ghost Babel". I didn't get enough money for it to buy a Gameboy Color, so I bought a Pocket instead, hoping Ghost Babel would be compatible. I can't tell you how annoyed I was when I learnt it wasn't.
Have you made any friends through your interest in gaming?
Besides everyone I talk to on message boards and the like, I have made a bunch. Most of my friends in school were gamers. We used to act out games of "Streets of Rage" and "Mortal Kombat" on the playground the whole time.
What is your most treasured game-related memory?
It's very difficult to chose. I'd probably chose to remember all times I played Streets of Rage II and Gunstar Heroes with my best friend when we were kids. It sounds cheesy, but we share a flat (apartment) now, I've bought both the games for the Virtual Console on the Wii, so we still play the games together every now and then. It's surprising how well they can help the conversation.
What is your favourite game of all time?
"MetalGear 2: Solid Snake" on the MSX2. No one other than Kojima could put as many successful, original ideas into a game. It was so ahead of the time when it came out, that people called the same ideas "ahead of their time" when they were put into MetalGear Solid eight years later.
Do you play games as much as you did when you were younger?
Oh, even more! When I was younger, I just played games for fun. Now that I have an interest in the industry and the artistic merits of the medium, there's a whole new depth to them.
How much has video games affected your life?
I can say without reservation that I wouldn't be the same person at all if I didn't play games. I started playing them at such a young age that they helped develop my personality, my interests and my perception of the world. They've probably had a bigger part in my life than my family!

@_@ Egads... Lesse...

What was the first video game you played?
Prrrrrrrobably Super Mario World. Oldschoolers can smack me now....
What was the first gaming system you owned?
A Super Nintendo.... I cried for it, haha~ Just to show how old I was when my parent(s) bought it for the family.
What was the first game you bought for yourself?
It wasn't that long ago, as I've been poor for a long time, but... once I got a job, I bought so many games lol.... It was most likely either Zelda II or Ninja Gaiden for the NES, my memory gets pretty fuzzy before yesterday, lol...
First games system you bought for yourself?
My PSP... with a good bit of a paycheck. Or was that my Dreamcast?
Have you made any friends through your interest in gaming?
I don't think so, where I come from, there's not that many gamers... The ones I've met were self-concious, and never intended on a friendship after the first meeting.
What is your most treasured game-related memory?
Crying at the end of MGS2, maybe.... Fighting for my dinner in Soul Calibur... Or was it jumping five feet in the air with the dramatic arrival of the fucking Regenerators in RE4.... I can't remember alot, nor can I choose, lol....
What is your favourite game of all time?
Err God, that one's hard... It's a toss-up between Dead Or Alive 2, Policenauts, Silent Hill 2, Vagrant Story, the Director's cut of Resident Evil... Fuck, there's too many lol~
Do you play games as much as you did when you were younger?
I actually don't, for a number of reasons, but the most prominant being that noone's buying me games and systems anymore, aha..hhah....
How much has video games affected your life?
It affects my way of thinking. The way I process thought, lol.... I feel odd when I go a day without playing something, something....

What was the first video game you played?
Probably Donkey Kong Country. I still think that's one of the most graphically amazing games that was released for the Super Nintendo, and it's fun too.
What was the first gaming system you owned?
Some form of Atari. I don't remember which one, but it had color and a fun game called B17 Bomber, which I was never able to play well (I was pretty young), but I did watch my older brother play it, so that was cool.
What was the first game you bought for yourself?
I'm pretty sure that it was Speedy Gonzalez for the original Game Boy. This was when I was about eight years old, so up until then I never bought any games (my older brother did).
First games system you bought for yourself?
A playstation or maybe my N64, I don't remember. I got my N64 in 2000, so I think that came first.
Have you made any friends through your interest in gaming?
None that I can think of. None of my friends were interested in gaming after the age of 12, so I guess that shows you how "into" games they were. I've met people who liked videogames, but I don't really get to hang out with those people often, so I wouldn't say that they were quite friends.
What is your most treasured game-related memory?
Definetly running over to my neighbor's house every day and watching him play videogames from about 4 pm to 8 pm (I would go back home for a quick bite to eat in between). This was from the age of 4 until I was 12 (we moved to another house that year, unfortunately).
What is your favourite game of all time?
Probably, either Earthworm Jim, or Earthworm Jim 2. I don't know if you guys have played these, but they're basically what they sound like, except way cooler.
Do you play games as much as you did when you were younger?
I play more than when I was younger, but it's less fulfilling now, because I have so many that I no longer truly appreciate the value of a game. The only games I ever finish and say, "Wow, that was freakin' awesome!" are probably the Kojima games, and maybe a few of the final fantasy games as well.
How much has video games affected your life?
Let's see...Now that I'm playing more videogames than ever, my grades have dropped from an A average to a B/B+ average, so I guess I've gotten less studious. (My theory is that people should figure out how to balance out their homework and fun so that they experience a lot of fun, while also getting good grades. I think I need to play less though, because I really wanna get my grades back up.)

In any case, this is a good topic, so everyone interested should certainly post something.

What was the first video game you played?

I think it was "Adventure" for the 2600. I remember getting that big wooden bastard on my 5th Christmas.

What was the first gaming system you owned?

The 2600, then the 7800, then the NES, Turbografix 16, Sega, SegaCD, Sega 32x, SuperNES, PSX, Dreamcast, PS2 then lastly, my Xbox360

What was the first game you bought for yourself?

I've picked out every game I've ever owned, but the first one I've actually PURCHASED was... Air Zonk, I believe.

First games system you bought for yourself?

I bought my SegaCD with cash after my trip to Sicily when I was 13.

Have you made any friends through your interest in gaming?

I'd say most of my friends were made through that sort of connection (that, and most of us are certifiable).

What is your most treasured game-related memory?

Does receiving fellatio whilst playing "Fatal Frame 2" count?

What is your favourite game of all time?

Honestly, I couldn't say. I love "Snatcher" with all of what's left of that area I call a "heart", Don't make me choose!

Do you play games as much as you did when you were younger?

Not even CLOSE! I would spend easily 8 hours of my day playing games when I was younger. Now, I'd be lucky to clock in 8 hours a week.

How much has video games affected your life?

Well, I suppose it spurred my interest in everything else computerized in my life, on top of my interest in programming, so I'd say it's effected enough.

What was the first video game you played?

It was Spider-man for the VCS 2600, back in Christmas 1982; I played Pac-man the same night if I recall correctly. It was at a friend's house, and it was the first time I ever slept outside home. I was 6 at the time.

What was the first gaming system you owned?

An Atari VCS 2600 as well. We had to buy it from the "gray market" here in Mexico, since there was still no official distribution. It was the wooden model. I still have it with me, although I have aquired another one that is boxed and complete. Mine barely survived in one piece =P

What was the first game you bought for yourself?

From money earned by myself, from work I did professionally? It was Snatcher.
With money I had raised by myself by saving it, it was Raiders of the lost Ark for the Atari 2600.

First games system you bought for yourself?

Again, by saving money and during a school exchange program to Portland, it was the Sega CD. By earning the money by myself, it was a Playstation.

Have you made any friends through your interest in gaming?

Several good friends, some of them go back to 1984 and we still play together or talk about the industry. Many of them have works related to game journalism, development or indirectly related to the field (computer programmers).

What is your most treasured game-related memory?

That's a difficult one to answer. But I believe it was when we bought the Sega Genesis, with savings by my brother and me (that's why I didn't listed it earlier, it was a shared buy). We arrived home and there was no electrical power. We read all the manuals we had (Golden Axe, revenge of Shinobi, Soccer and Altered Beat), even the Genesis manual. When the power was finally back we player for quite a while. But I recall many good times playing with friends, just having random fun with 2 player or multi player games, such as playing Mario kart or sharing the experience of Snatcher or Lunar with my brother.. or playing FF VIII and Metal Gear solid with friends, as well as getting all the secrets in Fighters Mega Mix.. way to many.

What is your favourite game of all time?

Again a difficult one. I tried to keep a list: http://junkerhq.net/favs.html , but of course it is incomplete. I'd have to say that Snatcher, Adventure for the 2600 and Lunar are some of the most beloved ones, but all the ones in that list and then some more newer ones do have a big place in my heart.

Do you play games as much as you did when you were younger?

No, I cannot. If I get 2 hours of play per week it is a rare occasion. But when a game comes out that I really want, I can give it as much as 20 hours in a week... but that hardly happens once a year.

How much has video games affected your life?

Quite a bit, it shaped many things and relations with people. I consider it a big part of my life, such as with movies or music. i still keep my consoles and games for all of them, and although I cannot play most of the games I'd like to, I still read news daily and talk with my friends about the current state of the industry, A sham eI feel that it has changed a lot for the worse, but I also believe it is a cycle that has to close in the near future.
