Platform Sega MegaDrive/ Genesis
Title: Zero Tolerance
year: 1994

A console FPS with some interesting gameplay/ effects you wouldn't expect to see on a 16 bit console :

[*]Your part of a team , you can only control one at a time but if they die there gone for good.

[*]Each team member has diffrent skills , demo guy , marksman , start out with body armor etc

[*]Bullets can damage walls , enemy blood splatters on the wall , drips in a satisfying way!

[*]You can melee , one guy can even do a kick!

[*]Can melee dead bodys and push them around like go- karts

[*]You can travel back to cleared floors to scavenge for heatlh and ammo.

[*] Awesome elevator midi when you change floors.

According to wikipedia Zero Tolarance is freeware now.

It's been a while. Time to continue:

The Red Star
Image
Initially, one may be put off by the game's visuals, but I can vouch for the excellent gameplay; The Red Star is an excellent, addicting top-down shooter. The game truly shines when played with a second player, and the frequent boss battles make the game horribly fun and rewarding. In addition, an upgrade system ensures that players will try their best to survive and accumulate kills. Mastering the simple lock-on system and maneuvering enemy bullets is essential and amazingly entertaining. The game is $9.99 USD and is well worth the cost.

Fatal Frame
Image
The franchise has become a bit more known in recent years, but relatively few have given these great survival horror titles a chance. The Fatal Frame games host excellent atmosphere, interesting stories, and plenty of mood-setting visuals and special effects. Tecmo wasn't completely behind the X-Box during the previous generation, and that turned out to be a huge plus for PlayStation 2 owners. If you haven't given these games a chance, you should definitely go find the first game. (Both the first and second games are available for the original X-Box as Director's Cuts, as well.)

I've been working to acquire a few of these games, as you can tell from my Avatar/Signature transformation. (It was time for a change.)

I'm a bit on the fence when it comes to Odin Sphere - Who here has played the game? Is it fun or simply repetitive and/or unrewarding?

I played it and have it. Being a fan of sprite based games I simply couldn't miss it. It is fun, but the extended replay vaue is given by finishing the games with multiple characters. That part is repetitive indeed.

My PS2 fascination continues with more titles for the platform.

Mister Mosquito (PS2)
Image
Here is another game no one played: Mister Mosquito. Sony, Zoom, and EIDOS (Under their "Fresh Games" label.) were adventurous enough to give the game a shot with international audiences. The game has a number of flaws, but it's highly addictive and entertaining. I recommend fans of obscure games give it a shot just to admire its very Japan-influenced qualities.

Ka 2: Let's Go Hawaii [Mister Mosquito 2] (PS2)
Image
The sequel that never reached the US. (Even worse, few people know of the game's existence!) I had the opportunity to play the actual game with my importing pal, and it is much improved over its predecessor. The graphics boast a higher resolution, Mister Mosquito himself no longer crashes into everything, and there's even a point system for upgrades! This experience feels much more complete and polished compared to the original. Despite not being in English, Ka 2: Let's Go Hawaii is excellent for fans that found the first game entertaining.

I think Mister Mosquito is awesome.

I haven't played it, but have any of you guys heard of Rule of Rose? Haunting Ground reminded me of it.

And this would be the part where I'd mention killer7, Beyond Good and Evil and, if this was any other forum, Policenauts.

Herzog Zwei is one of the first RTS's on console. I've never run across anyone besides my close friends that has even heard of this game. I got it because it had a cool transforming jet like on Macross. But lucky for me it turned out to be one of the best games on the Genesis. It also has one of the best soundtracks.

I found this game in one of those cds filled with roms and emulators back in the 90's, and when I played it for the first time I had no idea what did you have to do. After months of playing it i finally got it, and fell in love madly with it.

Herzog Zwei is not really obscure, at the very least not to anyone who owned a Genesis in the US. It was on every promotional poster included with the first four generations of carts.

Whoa, I haven't checked this topic in quite some time. I'd like to add that I own Herzog Zwei, as well, and played it extensively with a friend of mine back in the day.

In fact, an interesting story goes along with my acquisition of Herzog Zwei. The game originally belonged to this aforementioned "friend." When he stole my Sonic 2 and Mortal Kombat 3, he stupidly left Dune: Battle for Arrakis and Herzog Zwei behind. We never spoke again, but it turned out to be quite a nice "trade."

Herzog Zwei does have a kind of odd level of obscurity going for it. Even with those ads, it was easily overlooked. Perhaps it depended upon age; Back then, kids were only concerned with the next Sonic over any other Genesis release. That's the only explanation I can give.

Whatever the case may be, Herzog Zwei gets a huge thumbs up; Go find and play it.

Some descriptions might be a little off I dont remember some of them to well.
And some have alternate covers.

Image
Image
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 and 4(PS2)
I haven't played the first two yet so I cant recommend them.
But these two are amazing rpgs great somewhat dark stories
(mostly just the 4 is dark) with excellent characters and a
bit of grinding. The games play day by day with a few elements of
a sim like dating and making friends which affect different parts of the
game. They easily took over as my favorite rpg series. Especialy after
being beat over the head with all the ff7 bs and spin-offs recently let
it die already!

Image
Image
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 1 and 2(PS2)
Fight demons, capture demons, used captured demons to fight other
demons lol and in the second talk the shit out of demons hahaha
they're actualy cooler than I described them.

There are many other great series of games under the
Shin Megami Tensei name that are way to overlooked and
obscure games especialy smt: digital devil saga.
Image
Image

Image
Ristar(Sega Genesis)
Made by team sonic. Its a plat former. Dont know how to describe it
exactly...

Image
Clock tower 1(PS1)
Watch out for the scissor man!
Its a fun survival horror game.
(same as the snes game?)

Image
Popfull Mail (\sega cd, snes and a few others)
Side scrolling beat'em up adventure game. sega cd over snes.

Image
SkyGunner(PS2)
Cartoony airplane shooter with fun chain scoring.

Image
Brigandine(PS1)

Image
Hogs of War(PS1)
IDK found this looking for Brigandine cover
art haha

Arc the Lad 1-3 (PS1)
not totally obscure but w/e

Image
Star Ocean(snes)
My favorite one in the series.
The PSP remake is bullshit. Play the original fan translation
of the game. The original didn't have a word map like the
psp version. The world map really ruined the game it took away
all the life of the world.

Image
Covert Ops Nuclear Dawn(Playstion)
Fun action shooter with multiple endings.
shooting is kinda like mgs if I remember
it correctly. Moving sucks a little.

How can anyone forget
Image
Saga Frontier(PS1)
This is one weird distracted rpg... It will have you
saying wtf am I doing again? Multiple playable charecters
with their own overlapping storys.

Image
Tomba(PS1)
One of my favorite platformers
ever!

Tobal No 1
Fun fighter with adventure mode in a dungeon..

lots more....

I digress, though. I recommend this game heavily, but beware of the Sega Saturn sequel.
Agreed 100% about the SEGA CD game, disagree 110% about the SATURN game. I'm one of the lucky few to have the Europe exclusive english version of Keio 2, and I have to say it's one of my all-time favorite side scrollers. Fun fun and more fun in my honest opinion. It's just a silly romp from beginning to end.
Image

My favorite obscure game other than those 2? :

Image
MAGIC KNIGHT RAYEARTH (Working Designs) for the SEGA Saturn

I believe it was the last SEGA Saturn game released in the U.S., so at least the system went out with a bang. I had been reading the manga when it was released (the anime was released years later by AnimeWorks in the U.S.) so I was ready to pick this up in a heartbeat. Got it as a birthday present when I went into an EB store (now GameStop) and pointed at it and said, "Mom, that's what I want for my birthday". Mom ruled. :D

It plays almost exactly like the SNES Zelda game (except with three characters), and that is in no way a bad thing. It follows the manga and anime somewhat closely, but does take some liberties as far as certain characters dying in the game who lived in the other mediums. Also features some of the prettiest 2D graphics the Saturn ever produced and an incredible soundtrack, a few of the tracks pulled right from the anime.

Can't recommend this one enough.
