Perfect Blue

Post by ratperson665 »

This movie made almost as much sense as MGS2, had quit a bit of T&A and shocking graphic violence. But I loved it!! It was a hugely immersive thriller that kept me engrossed from its convoluted beginning to its illogical and insane climax! I just saw it last night and there is NO doubt in my mind that this is a film to buy and to watch many, many times! If you like movies that make you think, enjoy intelligent psychological thrillers or are just in the mood for a unique and eye-popping experience you can't go wrong with Perfect Blue!!

Maybe you do need to watch it a couple of times more. It is very logical and not insane at all. Also, you should check out other of Satoshi Kon's works, like Paranoia Agent or so.

I love Millennium Actress as well, but maybe it is not for you.

I haven't scene Millennium Actress but I looked it up on IMDB and it doesn't look like my taste. I don't go in for that "lost love" stuff, oh well, each to his own. I do like Paranoia Agent but I haven't seen every episode. I think Perfect Blue is one of those films that leaves itself open to interpretation. Kon said in an interview on the DVD of the film that he and the screenwriter deliberately made it vague to allow the audience to draw there own conclusion. I have yet to draw mine.

I've only seen Perfect Blue once (or is that twice?), but I really enjoyed it. I didn't have trouble understanding it, either. Very dramatic and interesting. :)

Glad you agree that it's a great film, ratperson. It is best to forget about the logic of the story -- as it should be with most films -- and simply immerse yourself in its atmospherics and pervading dread. It's Hitchcockian at every level, and instantly recalls Psycho in its conception, though it's content is perhaps far more disturbing on a psychological level. Is the extent of the violence and nudity unnecessary? Perhaps -- but I'm no prude, and therefore have nothing against it being included. Besides, I would never be so facetiously critical of such a brilliant piece of filmmaking. Don't anyone tell me that animation is second-rate to live-action filmmaking, when masterpieces such as this are being created. Satoshi Kon is a true auteur, and I'm a big fan of his other work as well. I recommend you check out his immensely enjoyable Tokyo Godfathers, as well as his short piece in Memories.

Paprika was released November 2006, in Japan :P
And I heard it would get released in the USA somewhere at the end of this year, but who knows...
I already saw it at Fantasporto, tho. Having seen all his films, Paprika clearly tops them all ;) Which just means it's better than the other 3, not that the other 3 are bad.
