Killer 7 Question
Killer 7 Question
The game Killer 7 seems to be a cult hit among some people, despite many low reviews. So i was wondering, will I like this game? I generaly like adventure games a lot. Snatcher and hotel dusk being one of my recent favourites.
This seems to be the perfect place to ask this since there are many adventure game fans on here and i was wondering what your opinions on this game are. It looks like a very interesting game storywise, with a very interesting art style. It seems many people respect Suda for this game because of its uniqueness and storytelling. Most reviewers say the gameplay isn't that great etc, but is it so bad that it ruins your enjoyment of this game?

This is awkward. killer7 is my second favourite game (1st being MG2:SS), but I can't recommend it to everyone.
Basically, I feel Capcom were aiming to completely optimise the Resident Evil series, so they made two games that would take different elements from the series and develop them into two seperate games. One was Resident Evil 4, and the other was killer7.
Resident Evil 4 was a high action game with controls that reflected that. The "Horror" element was derived in the overwhelming enemies and the eerie surroundings. killer7, however was a psychedelic, plot-heavy game with a completely original gameplay style. The "Horror" was derived from the bizarre plot, shocking taboo-breaking scenes, and a claustrophobic atmosphere.
It's very easy to label the game as "style over substance" and toss it aside, but the fans will tell you that such a statement couldn't be more incorrect. The plot, which first comes across as insane and almost unfollowable, runs on many different levels, and will have many gamers enthralled if they're paying attention.
The gameplay, which strikes many as a poorly thought out, becomes incredibly involving. You travel down a set-path, with only the ability to move forward, change direction (at certain points), turn around, or aim your weapon. This also means that enemies will travel down the same path, so you are set with the option to confront them or turn back and run away. For those who "get" it, they should find it really intense and exciting.
Some of the characters are particularly memorable, especially the bosses, which compete with some of MetalGear Solid's best. Not always due to clever gameplay, but originality or abstract ideas.
In summary, the game is very creative and it refuses to follow convention in what's expected of a Survival Horror game. If what I've said intrigues you, please play the game, and stick with it (I felt the start of the game was very slow when I first tried it). Those who have enjoyed it seem to have loved it entirely. I'll gladly include myself as one of those people.
On a personal level, I feel I might have grown tired of new gaming releases if I never played it. My love of killer7, and with it, Goichi Suda's direction, has reinvigorated my passion. It's like what becoming a Kojima fan must have felt like when he was just starting to become a brilliant creator (I'd claim that would have been with the release of Snatcher). Fucking wonderful!

No, as I was 3 years old in 1990. I enjoyed New Zealand Story and the Dizzy games on my Atari ST by then, but it would have been strange if I was playing a japan-only MetalGear game back then. I first played it when I found out about emulation (2001, I think). I had to buy it for my MSX before it became my favourite game, though.

I see. I asked because I know Snake Plissken played it when it first came out, the lucky bastard. He was one of the people who played both the originals before MGS. I think he said his family was living in Europe at the time and he was big into MSX gaming. I saw a photo of his collection once and sure enough it's there.87th wrote:No, as I was 3 years old in 1990. And JC; it's a great game, I know what your tastes are like and you could really appreciate a game like this (put into perspective this game is 'on rails', so no free movement really), so I think you should enjoy it at least. The storyline shall capture you, if anything.

I personally enjoyed Killer7 (one of the few games I have beaten in recent years). The style is like nothing you've seen in modern gaming with an extremely deep and complex storyline to match (although, a good majority of the complexity is inferred rather than bluntly presented).
The gameplay is sadly it's weakest link. It's very linear and repetitive, which will drive away most gamers. However, if you're more into storylines, this isn't a game you should pass up, especially used for 10 bucks like you can find it at most Gamestops.
