Yeah, well, as legend goes, supposedly Kubrick never finished the book before finishing making the movie, and he did say he regretted that decision.

Last movie I watched was "Running Scared", an 1986 film not to be confused with a more recent film of the same name. I didn't even see the whole thing.

Where'd you get that? Kubrick was told about and read the last chapter while in pre-production, but decided against including it presumably because he felt it's something of a cop-out. To say not including the reformed Alex means the film only 'gets' half the point is genuine idiocy on a base level - it's a far more interesting, complex work if Alex doesn't just decide what he's doing is wrong and goes off to start a family. There's more to it than that, obviously, and although it does break the 21 chapters thing, it's better without it.

The last film I watched was Sympathy for the Devil and the next one I'll watch will be The Mirror. Hope this is useful to everyone.

Oh come on Rick! I'm trying not to create a flame war or anything but hear me out.
Spoiler:
The original novel by Anthony Burgess was a story of The importance of moral choice and the fact that people can change of there own accord. The film gets the moral choice part but tosses away the change part which goes hand in hand with the moral choice part. In chapter 21 Alex is still under the spell of The Ludovico Technique, it's just been reversed and he's back to his old ways. But then he manages to renounce violence by his own choice. Chapter 21 is the most important chapter in the book because it expresses what the truth about humanity really is. You cant make people change. Both book and film tell us that. But they can and do change on there own. The film leaves that part out. It's like watching Blade Runner but turning it off just before Roy says "All Those moments will be lost in time. Like tears in rain." You only get part of the moral and leave out the most important section of the story.
Edit: Maybe we should just agree to disagree over this chapter 21 thing.

Back on Topic. I just saw Pulp Fiction, pretty good movie. I'm in the process of watching Seven Samurai. What a movie!! Absolutely blown-away so far!! Reservoir Dogs is next.

Well, yeah. I was disagreeing with the statement that he hadn't read it before finishing the film. That Wiki flatly contradicts what you posted.

Pre-production, mid-production, whatever - they've both got the word 'production' in them, so there.

Okay, okay, whoa, calm down dude. I know I was wrong, but I was just stating that he hadn't read that last chapter of the novel, sorry for not making myself more clear about it.

"I also heard that from someone else before as well" sounds like "here's my evidence you little Swiss dog." That is what you were implying, isn't it?

'So there' was just said in jest, hence the italics, but now I REALLY AM ANGRY.

The fun of the internet. Humour gets lost in the plain deserts quite easily. Anyway I don't actually mean to sound like a smart ass, I hate the types myself; so I'm sorry about it all, if an apology ain't good enough dude, then...well...I'm off. Later.

Just saw the 1972 classic The Godfather. I liked it a lot. My next movie is Blue Velvet (1986). I hated Eraserhead. But on the other hand I loved The Elephant Man and I liked a lot of David Lynch's short films so I'll watch this one with an open mind.

I wouldn't exactly call Godfather a cult movie. It's far too popular for that (IMDb #1 and all...) But I agree, it's an amazing movie.

And everyone hates Eraserhead, but it's for very different reasons. It's that damn unique!

Blue Velvet is sick and twisted I must say, Lynch has never been more vile, actually. Hopper is the epitome of chilling in that film...

The Elephant Man is a masterpiece, John Hurt's best acting, ever. I'm such a Lynch fanboy. Haha.

What in Jonestown makes you say that? I absolutely love it personally, and it's probably the most critically successful of Lynch's films - according to Rotten Tomatoes, it is, anyway. It has a 93% rating for gawdsake!

True. I guess I wasn't really thinking when I wrote that post. Calling it a "cult classic" was really stupid now that I think about it. I still wouldn't call it "amazing" though. I thought it was very good, but not amazing.
Henry Spencer wrote:And everyone hates Eraserhead, but it's for very different reasons. It's that damn unique!

I wanted to like it. I really did. But it was JUST SO BORING! No plot, no dialog, nothing happens! NOTHING! Lynch made some good short films and I saw part of Blue Velvet and liked what I saw. And he directed The Elephant Man. Enough said. He has talent! Why did have to make something so boring?!
Henry Spencer wrote:Blue Velvet is sick and twisted I must say, Lynch has never been more vile, actually. Hopper is the epitome of chilling in that film...

From what I've seen so far, I'm inclined to agree
Henry Spencer wrote:The Elephant Man is a masterpiece, John Hurt's best acting, ever.

Agreed! That's one of my all-time favorite films!! Just one question though.
Spoiler:
Why does everyone always say it has such a downer ending? It's a sad movie over-all but I always thought the ending was really a happy one. I mean for starters, who would want to live like that? Second, when he died he died in comfort, surrounded by people who cared about him. Third, his last night of life was one where he was treated like a king. Fourth, he had a vision of his mom who comforted him just before he died.

Yes, Eraserhead is hated upon for many reasons that I hear so many times, it just drains me when I hear the same ones over and over again. 'It's boring/too weird/self-indulgent/boring/likes to think it's something it's not/not weird enough (funnily enough, people tend to use that excuse when they can't of many other things to say negative about it/I just don't like it (easy way out)/boring/impossible to understand and did I say 'boring' yet? The amount of times I have heard people say it's 'boring' is unbelievable. Too weird, I can understand, but boring? Come on!

That's what I meant by that expression, Rick; everybody seems to hate it for 'different' reasons. They just don't know how to form their expression when it comes to negativity, and have their opinion heard about it. I love Eraserhead, in fact, I named myself on just about every forum I have signed up with after (only TUS in which I have not), under the alias, Henry Spencer; the protagonist and the antagonist of the movie (in my opinion).

As for Elephant Man; like people say, fiction is only subjective, it should be different with every viewer, everyone takes something different from another person, that's the beauty of a human being, we're all so different, so unique. I personally found the ending upon first viewing to be really upsetting and I decided to watch it again a month or two after, since it was on my mind a lot, and watched the ending again with another viewpoint entirely. I could tell you the same thing after watch One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, I had a similar feeling of sadness after watching the film, and watched it again and found that there is a glitter of hope by the ending, it was just not how I predicted it should or would end.

I was bored rigid while watching it. I mean, maybe I missed something but what I saw was just a bunch of meaningless images strung together by a crying mutant and a guy sitting in his apartment. That's it!! I swear this movie is probably the most un-watchable piece of trash I've ever seen! Of course, that's just my opinion. I hate Eraserhead and you love it. Like you said, the beauty of human beings is that we’re all so different.

Henry Spencer wrote:As for Elephant Man; like people say, fiction is only subjective,
The Elephant Man wasn't pure fiction though. I'm pretty sure there was a real John Merick.

Currently watching "The Big Lebowski". Pretty funny movie.

Don't worry, my parents hated it as well, hell, even I did when I first watched it, but now I think the world of the film.

And I think a lot of occurences in The Elephant Man was fiction, it wasn't meant to be an accurate portrayel of John Merick.

Mine hated it too. I watched it with both of them and 20 minutes in my dad turned to me and said "Ben, I've had all I can stand from this thing." and walked out. After the movie was over the first thing I said was "What the hell was that?" my mom, who suffered through it with me, said "It was a waste of time." I just nodded.

But maybe we should end this argument about Eraserhead here. This is clearly something we'll never be able to agree on. Let's just keep moving.

I said it wasn't pure fiction. I'm sure most of it was fiction but there must of also been some factual elements.

Watched '300' and animation called 'Spirited away'.
Both were good movies, 300 is little bit overrated IMO, but still it was good.
Spirited away was nice looking animation, fun and interesting story too.

rating for both movies: 3½/5

next i'm going to watch 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' and Luc Bessons 'Nikita'

Yesterday I watcher "The Fountain" for a second time on HD-DVD, I love the music as well.

Tonight I'll watch Pirates of the Caribbean on Blu-ray with Michelle (She loves them, and I want to see how good the transfer and audio are, getting ready for friday anyway).
