MGS2 won't work on euro PS3

Post by Solidé »

Yup, sad but true.
Endymion from TUS forums informed about this originally.

MGS, MGS Special Missions/VR Missions, MGS3 and MGS3 Subsistence will work, but not MGS2 or MGS2 sub. You can check the specific version numbers of different MGS versions that will wok on PS3 at here: http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/

So don't get rid of your PS2 just yet...

At one time, MGS2 was the most anticipated game of all time. Now they throw it into the gutter like that, how revolting. :x

Not that it affects me; I will not be getting a PS3 for a LONG time to come anyway.

Well, this is just the list for the current firmware. They'll likely expand the list in the future.

Does it work on the U.S. PS3? I'm keeping mine anyways for guitar hero and time crisis, but I can't really test one out, since $600 is a helluva lot to pay for it...

I think it should work fine on first generation US PS3s, but they're taking out a chip from the new ones and using PS2 emulation software instead (so some games don't work).

So if I buy a PS3 now, I can play metal gear, but if I wait, I might not be able to? What I'm getting at is should I keep my ps2 or not?

As 87th said, current American PS3s play it just fin since they have the PS2 hardware inside to run in PS2 mode. Euro PS3's don't have those chips inside, so they use a new software emulator for PS2... thus the incompatibilities.

In case you want a yes/no answer, keep your ps2 if you are not buying a current gen PS3.

That's my plan. Not sure if the shop I pre-ordered will be having a midnight launch, but i'll try some Kojima games and post how they run and what's wrong as soon as I can.

I read Sony said the compatability list won't be added to because they want to focus on "the future." Not-so-great success.

No. If you've heard anything about price cuts, it's pure speculation. Sony are remaining very stubborn with the PS3, so I wouldn't expect to see one any time soon. A Christmas price cut isn't too unlikely, but with GTAIV and MGS4 both expected to be released around then, I wouldn't bet money on it.

I read future versions of the ps3 in north america somewhere down the line will switch to software emulation rather than the current hardware emulation.. So current ps3 owners should consider themselves lucky i suppose. :)

A price cut is out of the question since they are loosing around 300+ USD on each PS3. It is more of an attempt to cut the loses.

Yeah, I'd bank on them cutting out the old Sony hardware from future units in the U.S./Japan. They should have done it in the first place if they weren't going to put a fucking scaler in. Playing old-gen games in HD (or at least 480p) to cut out HDTV lag would have pleased a lotta people. I seriously would have kept one based on that reason alone, for rhythm & fighting games. Course I would need scale-to-1080i support too :P which is not in the cards maybe ever.

I just carried over a US PS3 for one of my cousins in the UK. The price difference was the biggest factor for him. He paid about 250 pounds for a 20GB US model instead of 425 pounds for a 60GB UK model.

How much is that in US dollars? America's still caught up in some interesting units of measurement. My car get 14 hectares to the hog's head, and that's the way I like it! (Long live the Simpsons...)

It means you can't watch UK Blu-Ray video or play European PS1/PS2 games (although the backwards compatibility on the PAL systems is pretty crap anyway). I'm also unsure if you'll be able to use the American PlayStation Store with a UK credit card, but I think the price difference is worth it.

I own a UK PS2 and I doubt I'll get into buying Blu-Ray discs until the standalone machines are affordable. I'm quite interested in some of the commercial digital distribution games though (Little Big Planet looks really good), so I'd be very disappointed if I couldn't use the PlayStation store.

It's quite likely that I'll keep away from buying one until MGS4's released, but I can see an advantage to buying an American one (price and the ability to play US PS1/PS2 games).

Dollars to pounds is very roughly 2-1

How does that work, running NTSC stuff on a PAL TV? Are there framte probs or is the screen aspect ratio messed up?

All new European TVs are 60Hz compatible. It's very uncommon to have a 50Hz TV, now. In fact, the PAL Metroid Prime 2 was only compatible with 60Hz TVs.

I'm still not completely sure how I feel about the PS3. Even back before the 360 was released, I had some huge doubts about the PS3 based on some of the changes Sony was making. (Thankfully, they fixed one of their largest issues - The banana controller.) Nevertheless. the only game keeping me away from a 360 is MGS4 - If there's one game I can't miss, it's Kojima's last Metal Gear game.

As for MGS2, I was one of the people that denounced it when I finished playing it. After finishing MGS3, which rejuvinated my love for the franchise, I realized MGS2 was never a bad game. Some storytelling points, most of which take place during the last string of extremely long Codec conversations, were a bit too convoluted for their own good. Otherwise, the plot and characterization is solid, and the gameplay and graphics are equally amazing. Now that I've seen the best of the PS2, I can't help but notice that MGS2 was never a poor experience - It may have been one of the best, even with its glaring faults.

That's how I feel, at least.

Sure, mainstream games are fun, but you haven't tried Snatcher yet.
