Don't get ahead of yourself, Final Fantasy XIII is way bigger. Just look at the sales figures for previous MGS installments vs. FF-installments that were released around the same time and you'll know what I mean; MGS2 sold about 5.5 million copies worldwide whereas Final Fantasy X sold nearly 8 million. MGS3, despite being released a year earlier, has sold one million copies less than Final Fantasy XII (about 4 million for MGS3, 5 million for FFXII).
Osiris wrote:Yeah, I know that, but it's still not as popular as those other two games. You think stores will open at midnight for MGS4 like they did for Halo 2? Will MGS4 score pre-orders in the millions like GTA does?
Probably not, especially considering how MGS4 will most likely sell less than MGS3 (which in turn sold less than MGS2). One should remember that most people play games out of novelty, and I'm honestly not sure MGS4 offers too much of that. The MGS formula has been executed three times already and unless there's some significant addition this time, it'll inevitably attract a smaller audience than the previous iteration.

Yeah, there are more aspects to what sells a game (which would provide explanations as to why MGS3 sold less than MGS3 for instance), but I'm pretty apathic to the subject so I'll just leave it be.

I said out of the PS3 exclusives, not the ones which have, um, well, gone astray. Like FFXIII and GTAIV.

Ummm FFXIII is still (sadly) exclusive. There's like 800 expansions and sideworks for the FFXIII universe in the works apparently, but the main game is still for Sony.

By the end they might all go 360 though, who knows. I think MS would petition more for MGS though -- they might as well give up on Japan already.

I was referring to the main game (forget all the spin-offs), which is still being released exclusively for the PS3.

Fair enough. I just remember Squaresoft saying something about FFXIII going to the 360 an eon ago, seems it was a fake report.

Here's a translation of the MGS side of the timeline from the 20th anniversary site.

Would someone mind checking it up and translating the real history part too ?

There could be interesting info in it (for example, I know they mention the 9/11 attacks, the creation of the Mossad, ... in the real history part, which could play a role in MGS4).

I looked at both of them but didn't see anything that important. The MGS3 timeline has a lot of those events on it as well.

Well, there are these new facts : Snake being on that Japanese boat during the Bravo Shot (and not on an American base as stated in MGS3), President Kennedy having angered the Philosophers and The Boss forming the Cobra unit during the Battle of Stalingrad.

Yeah, but do they give any major insight into MGS4? That was the criteria I had in mind when I skimmed them.

Well, the 9/11 attacks are mentioned, so the "Manhattan incident" refers perhaps to 9/11, not to the Arsenal Gear crash.
The creation of the Mossad is mentioned : maybe Snake will have to fight one of its members...

Nothing major, sure...

BTW the official site has been updated (http://www.konami.jp/gs/game/mg20th/20th_campaign.html).
It's apparently about some kind of MG party.

Interesting, they say they're going to reveal details about upcoming projects related to the series at this event (at the Tokyo Grand Carlton on July 24th). 50 people will be invited to come out of all the people who apply.
