MetalGear Solid: Portable Ops + Announced
Saw this coming from the second they announced bonuses in the PAL MPO.
http://uk.psp.ign.com/articles/805/805614p1.html
Judging by the screenshots, it'll just be a load of levels based on other games in the series. Unless they include MG1+2 levels, I'm not too interested.

"Infinity Mission" sounds promising. Anyway, looks to me like they're testing how much of Metal Gear imagery is realisable on the PSP. Perhaps this means we can look forward to remakes of the original MSX games, or at least a legitimate port of the original Playstation MGS. I'm still curious to see how Kojima would come up with a PSP equivalent of the Psycho Mantis battle.
Also, Old Snake looks surprisingly impressive on the PSP. Doesn't blow me away, either, but I relish the chance to play as Solid in some capacity, anyway.

It's like Integral, Substance and Subsistence. The original game plus extras. *cough*Missing wrote:About PO+, is this simply an add-on to the original game, or the original game revamped? I don't understand why they'd package it in Japan with the original game if it was everything in the original plus more.

Let's hope that if he does more, he goes back and revamps the stories of Outer Heaven and Zanzibar Land. If MGS4 is meant to be the "last chapter," that's fine, but if it doesn't turn out to be the last game, I really hope they just decide to play around with prequels and in-between stories from how on. I don't want to see Kojima letting his apprentices make a whole slew of sequels that have little or nothing to do with what could turn out to be a very nice closed storyline.Missing wrote:Kojima will announce it alongside his latest gaming project - Metal Gear Solid 5.Osiris wrote:So as much as Kojima says otherwise, is an updated MGS4 in 2009 all but certain?

I agree. I just hope Kojima pays attention to what's being done. Besides, it's fertile ground for him to try out new ideas in game design. Perhaps we could really see him explore the experimental side of MGS after the responsibility of telling the story is done. I'd particulary enjoy a 10 hour long Fission Mailed/The Sorrow experience, myself.Osiris wrote:Whatever happens, more games is a certainty. It's a huge money-maker for Konami.

Yeah, I get that much, but why re-package it with the original PO if it's not simply an add-on? What I'm asking is, if I already own PO, would this be a self-contained disc of additional extras, or an alternate version of the complete game?Osiris wrote:It's like Integral, Substance and Subsistence. Might be a new version that works with the same save files from previous played sessions of MPO, so the first purchase wasn't a waste. Not that I'd ever think it was, of course.Missing wrote:Yeah, I get that much, but why re-package it with the original PO if it's not simply an add-on? I'm not too excited about this title as usually when they annouce new Metal Gear title.
Of course i'm going to buy it when it comes out(as collector), but i don't think i'm going to play it too often. I didn't really enjoy MPO Online nor MGS3 online too much. ??:
right now i'm looking forward to Bande Dessinée 2.

To be honest, there's very few MetalGear games I like less than Portable Ops. I rate pretty much every canon-MG game as some of the best games I've ever played. Bearing that in mind, I thought that MPO was just an average PSP action game.
There was so much about it that I hated, and it actually made me fall out of favour with the series as a whole for a couple of months. I had to play MGS1 again before I remembered that I actually liked the series more than any other.

Really? I thought it broke some pretty interesting ground, in a few areas. Granted, the camera system proves why the classic, top-down angle is best, and some of the level design was a bit too claustrophobic, but I was surprised, for one thing, by how Kojima's use of boss battles really matured this time around. He's always had a reputation for having nicely climactic showdowns in the past, but really, so many of them are pretty standard fare that I was surprised to see how well the old shoot-out tactics matured here. I was particularly impressed by the Cunningham and Gene battles, both of which had some pretty clever prodecural puzzles, once you got past the rote gunplay tropes. Also, the 4-item restriction when going into battle was a marvelous little touch. Added an extra level of strategy, and helped cut down on the laughably implausible amounts for characters to carry, as they usually do.
I'll admit, I would like to see an MGS title for the PSP that adheres to the single, long mission style, rather than the many bite-sized ones, but the fact that Kojima is willing to open up and try to cut down on some of the linear tendencies of the series proves that he takes his criticism seriously, at least. Frankly, the gameplay here reminded me most of the original MSX games, at times, as it had something similar to their Zelda style overworld maps (or Super Mario Bros. 3, if you will.)
What can I say. It worked for me.
