I just saw 2001: A Space Odyssey. What an amazing movie! Wonderful shots, some of the best sound design I've ever heard in a film and a truly incredible ending! This film moved me beyond words! It really is a tragedy that Kubrick is no longer with us. Just watch it! You won't regret it!

Great movie, yeah. One of my favs. Amazingly, the special effects still look stunning after nearly 40 years.

All of Kubrick's film have that timeless quality to them. He's my favourite director for a reason. :P

This is one of his finest though, so yeah, great film. If you haven't yet seen The Shining or Barry Lyndon, do so now, ratperson.

I've always considered Kubrick to be overrated, even though he does have several masterpieces to his name. I guess it's not so much that I feel Kubrick shouldn't garner the attention he does, or that it isn't rightfully deserved, but it just needles me when people talk about the same guys over and over while so many others continue to go on forgotten or unnoticed.

Three films up for evaluation!

The first was Dark City, a film that came highly recommended to me. I'd very much like to talk at length about the similarities between it and another more popular film, but I don't want to spoil this rather excellent movie. It's well worth a watch, a great twist too. It's got Kiefer Sutherland playing a jittery, hunchbacked scientist (a far cry from his current role as Jack Bauer), and Crystal Maze's very own Richard O'Brien!

Second film was Ryuhei Kitamura's Versus, which I borrowed from a friend of mine. The plot isn't too deep, but it's enough to keep you interested. The action sequences were delightfully cheesy, plenty of gore to go around too. I think there was a part where a man's head was punched through and his eyeballs got ripped out.

Finally, there's the 2004 film version of Appleseed - which again came recommended from someone, namely because they said it drew parallels to a story I was working on. So, naturally, I gave it a watch in hopes of finding some inspiration. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. The special effects and the overall visuals of the film were excellent, the fight scenes were decent with plenty of action going on, but ultimately I found the plot and characterisation rather bland. I simply didn't feel any connection with any of the characters, they didn't feel fleshed out enough. In the end I just didn't care who lived and who died. In addition, everything felt like it was hastily being moved along, and in the end a couple of antagonists just seemed irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. I'm guessing that this is purely something for fans of the manga.

Videodrome

I don't know where to begin with this film, it's quite possibly the strangest thing I've ever seen. It was odd in that it was bizarre, yet I felt appealed because of it. This is the first film by David Cronenberg that I've seen, and I can see now why people consider him to be a master of the "body horror" genre. I could see what kind of message the plot was portraying, yet I was easily more interested in all the crazy stuff going on. Bonus points for James Woods. Sorry if this review is rather haphazard, I really don't know how to describe it.

I'm tempted to try Scanners now.

Scanners is even better, I think! Great director.

Just watched Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola. Definitely a different take on the myth than I have ever seen before (Near Dark being my personal favourite). I'm a big fan of vampire films, so this one really blew me away just then...what cast, what a director, what a movie. 9/10

I saw The Planet Of The Apes yesterday (original, not remake). I saw it when I was really young, and it bored me, but now that I'm old enough to appreciate it, I really enjoyed it.

I heard The Simpson's Movie is on TV Links and not worth paying for, so I'm probably going to watch it on the internet later on, today.

If you've ever read Stoker's Dracula, Coppola's version is pure shit. They've took way too many liberties with the plot, Keanu Reeves' acting was some of the worst I've ever seen, and they left out/added things that didn't need to be. If you've never read it though, it would probably be an all right movie, just if they had left Reeves out of it...he was the worst part of the whole thing. :)

Dirty Harry

An entertaining, definitive cop thriller featuring the venerable Clint Eastwood as 'Dirty' Harry Callahan, a maverick detective who doesn't play by anybody's rules except his own. I particularly enjoyed his no-nonsense attitude and unique approach to policing, with his own opinion on 'justice'. The highlight of the film though is easily DS9's Andy Robinson (Garak), who turns in a chilling and memorable performance as the deranged Scorpio. Overall, a very stylish film. Decent soundtrack too.

One of my favourite parts in the film is when Scorpio commandeers a school bus and beats the kids around, forcing them to sing "Row Row Row Your Boat".

"Stupid kid! Come on sing everyone! Sing or I'll go home and kill all your mommies, sing, sing!"

Here's a tough question for you, what do you like more? French Connection or Dirty Harry? Two definitive cop movies from the 70s, with a hard boiled edge to each film.

Personnally, I'd say French Connection (for the gritty, realistic feeling, the car chase and the hard-boiled main character).
Plus I didn't like so much the first Dirty Harry - I found a bit dated. I prefer Sudden Impact and Magnum Force.

Last film I saw was The Devil Wears Prada, yesterday. I've been curious to watch it since the release and more after some friends recommended I should see it.
I enjoyed it a lot. It's not a Director movie, it's a Hollywood made movie, who lives from the actors and their representations, and I think it was quite well at that. The story is nothing new, but it's damn funny to see some of the situations the main character is put in, especially that J.K.Rowling bit, lol. The (more serious) part was very good also, but the ending is a bit stupid and doesn't quite fit with the development of the story, Don't want to spoil anything, but what happens is that the main char decides to be what she didn't want to, at the begining.
Anyway, I liked it.

As for what I want to see next... I have no clue, a lot of things. Probably Inland Empire, for the second time.

If you like Dirty Harry, you'd definitely be doing yourself a favor by checking out two other magnificent urban dramas by Don Siegel, Madigan and Charley Varrick. Each are different from one another, but they're both spectacular in their own right.

And for Friendkin admirers, you've got to see To Live an Die In L.A., which may very well be his best film. It's easily one of the best American films of the eighties.
