No prob. I came across it when I was taking a script writing class while online looking for some info on Joseph Campbell and the Monomyth (or the atypical Hero's Journey). Showed it to my course instructor who found it to be quite humorous as well.

This has probably already been thought of, but you might be able to fit all the text into RAM if the text were compressed/encoded into a smaller format. Huffman coding or LZW are possibilities. The benefit of using something like Huffman coding is that the strings don't need to be decompressed, they can be read straight from the format they are encoded in. More complicated compression would need a buffer of some kind.

Also, something like dual tile encoding could be used to encode very frequently occurring sets of characters into a single byte pattern (a program would need to do an analysis of the script to choose the best sets).

Another idea would be to try streaming the text off of the disk. Stick the largest contiguous block of text into memory that you can, then when the program seems like its going to start requesting text outside of that block, discard some older text and stream in the new text a small bit at a time from the disk every vblank. It might be possible to keep it simple by using a sliding window of the text (so only a contiguous block of text is loaded at any one time), but I have no idea. This idea is probably more complicated than I make it seem and I have no idea how well it would work (text strings might need to be re-organized so that it is read more sequentially and not all over the place which would defeat the purpose of the sliding window).

Sorry if these have already been attempted. I hope they at least give some inspiration.

Thanks Densetsu, but the kind of problems that are being faced now, are not of such kind. We appreciate the effort though.

I think it has something to do with timing and getting the necessary amount of text on-screen during dialogue due to the Japanese language requiring less space than the English language.

Perhaps abbreviating every possible word would help? Like people= ppl policenaut=plcnt and=& to= -, et cetera?

Almost like texting or an AIM convo, a whole paragraph could be expressed in two lines.

Umm, was that a joke? That would be REALLY hard to read, and I'd much rather have to wait another YEAR instead of having to read everything like that. Oh, and what Lupin movie would that be (I've missed the last couple)?

lol, why stop there? You could pull a Wasteland and just have all the text in printable form and just tell the player to read whichever line is relevant

Yeah, me too, and I'm never dissapointed because I usually don't expect much. Every time I come back to check the posts I tell myself to be patient (it doesn't work too well).

Yeah.... a joke... heh heh (Bows head in shame of his serious suggestion.) It was Jefferson who suggested it to me, I was just telling you guys how Jefferson felt on the subject, as he spells all his words with three letters or less.

Also, Jimbo, It's the brand new one that JUST came out in Japan where green and red jackets somehow are in the same city and they fight, or something, I will try to find the promo site.

Please do. It was really annoying when Adult Swim (an extension of Cartoon Network in the US) cancelled the show. Now I'm forced to buy the dvds (I haven't picked up any of the manga yet).

Actually I thought that the original Lupin series had him in a green jacket as well. Then the second series, which was broadcast in the USA had him in a red jacket. I read that on wikipedia or something, so I could be wrong.

I have a few volumes. They are hilarious, written much better than the show, if you can believe it.

There was also a pink jacket in the early 90's.

I'll have to ask my friend for the trailer of the new one again.

I think that Lupin is an aquired taste or something, because I knew a lot of people who said that it was stupid and only slightly entertaining. I loved the show, but it got cancelled before they could complete more than one season on Cartoon Network. I think it's just a bit too out of this world for most people. What's the content (adultwise) for the manga? I'm not sure that a manga with tons of nudity would fly in my household, so that's the one thing that might keep me from buying them.

Yeah you have to have a certain sense of humor to digg the show.

The manga, well, not TONS of nudity, but I would say perhaps lots. Not tons, but lots. There's also lots of innuendo and sex. The sex is displayed though in a clever motif using the sign for male and the sign for female. The book wouldn't roll over well if your parents or girlfriend like to read over your shoulder while you were reading a chapter with it, though. I think Monkey Punch is a great writer, but likes to toss in evidence of his perversion a bit too often.

Yeah, I'm not so sure that my girlfriend OR my family would appreciate it, but at least I know the content now. I'm just realizing how many different tastes people have as far as anime goes. It's no different than regular movies. Half of my friends who saw Akira said that it was too weird, the other half loved it. Half of them saw Lupin and hated, the other half loved it. Half of them saw Ghost in the Shell, and MOST of them hated it. I guess it's just different tastes, but it's surprising that people can't find enjoyment in movies like Akira. Then I think about my movie tastes and I love stuff like Evil Dead, but I found 300 to be mediocre (I didn't like the film style that much). I guess no matter what genre, there's always extreme preferences. One thing that annoys me is when people say this anime sucks and that anime sucks. The problem is that they don't look at the various aspects of the show. In Akira, none of my friends understood the ending
Spoiler:
Where Tetsuo goes berserk and creats a minuature Big Bang. Because of that, they didn't understand the symbolism of him taking the form of a baby on the radar screen.
I do my best to find the good aspect in every movie/anime that I see. I thought some things in 300 were cool, and I understood why people loved it so much. Just because I didn't like the movie overall, doesn't mean that I said that it sucked. (apologies for the long post)

If I may jump in here, I feel this is the exact scenario I was referring to in my previous post: We're not sure what the problem is so the amount of help we could potentially provide is stifled. Not to ignore X_Lupin's post, but I want to hear Artemio elaborate with as much detail as he can possibly divulge. Without more information, all we can do is sit here idly, hoping that someone from the team exclaims "I have done it!" It's been months now; Outside assistance seems more than necessary at this point.

Therefore, we want to do more than watch - We're willing to help, we just need to know how.

I know I have three talented programmers I can ask, but I've never approached them because I have no information to give them. Densetsu's attempt at helping is the perfect example: Why give someone a general statement like "it relates to text implementation" when we could be completely wrong? If that's the case, more suggestions will pile in, but they're not for the current situation. Therefore, we'll simply get the same answer Densetsu received: it's "not of such kind." We'd simply lose more time.

Of course, my post sounds anxious or even somewhat abrasive. However, that's not my intention. I am simply trying to reach out to the team.
