PlayItBogart's NES Metal Gear 1 review on revver

Post by snatcher1988 »

http://revver.com/video/943553/metal-gear-nes-review/

Anyone remember PlayItBogart, who used to review games on YouTube? Well, now he reviews games on revver, because apparently, Take 2 wrongfully flagged his ass over a video he posted about Grand Theft Auto 4.

Anyways, here is his review of the NES Metal Gear, a true disgrace to the original MSX game that Kojima worked on. This review sums up all the fuck-ups with this version of the game accurately.

P.S. First Blood Part 1 music at the end FTW!

I like this review more than his Snake's Revenge one since he actually talks about flaws in the game.

I remember when I was about 12 and I tried to play the NES game. I never made it past the guard dogs, so I finally gave up. Now when I play the MSX version, it's so much better. But I still never new that the NES game was so full of holes.

The worst part is that some of the radio messages are out of place due to the new area layout. For example, if you contact Schneider at the roof of Building 1, he'll tell you the Bomb Blast Suit is in the second floor, when its actually in Building 4 (the place where Gray Fox is locked).

Geez, it sounds like the lamest metal gear game ever. I wonder if most people even consider it metal gear at all (I wouldn't).

None of the NES MG games should be considered the true old-school MG games. Period. The true old-school MG games, were, and will forever be the ones released for the Japanese MSX2.

Yet, the game did reasonably well enough to inspire Snake's Revenge, which inspired Kojima to create Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, which eventually served as the foundation of Metal Gear Solid. Must have been Nintendo Power's hype machine.

It isn't that bad if you ignore the MSX2 version. I would say its on par with Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, which is another one of Konami's NES "classics" that weren't really that good in retrospect.

It could be worst though. The C64 and DOS versions of Metal Gear were based on the NES version. They were crappy ports of a crappy port.

I like Snake's Revenge, but meh.

Despite its arguable quality, you couldn't really call it a MetalGear game.

Only if you compare it to the real Metal Gear 2 and the later MGS games.

I thought it was a slight step up from Metal Gear 1 for the MSX2.

I'd beg to differ, but I'm not going to deny you of an opinion.

Great, now this thread has made me curious as to what Snake's Revenge was like. It looks like I'm gonna go try that one now.

Its a decent game if you can tolerate the side-scrolling segments, crapass localization and a few cheap moments here and there. I still wouldn't take it over any of the real Metal Gear games, but its good as far as NES action games are concerned and its light years ahead than the first NES game. Besides, what other stealth games were released for the NES?
