Snatcher versions

Post by zavlin »

Hi, i was thinking about obtaining and playing snatcher but noticed there was a number of different versions and on different platforms. Theres also "snatcher sd" which appears to be an alternate telling of the game? Any thoughts as to which i should ideally start with? Thanks.

Start with SECA CD version.
That's the best option for a noobie, trust me.
There is many reasons... example SEGA CD version is the only Snatcher game wich has been released in western and has english voice acting. The Graphics and background art is also way better than most other Snatcher games. Musics rocks and game just simply feels fast and easy to play.

There is also some fanmade translations for original MSX version of Snatcher and SD Snatcher. The Original is of course the "same game" as SEGA CD but since it's 6 years older game, the graphics and musics are heavily downgraded. The game doesnt' have voiceacting (not even Japanese) and it's shorter. Original Snatcher is good for those who are most hardcore fans of Snatcher but i really can't recomment it for anyone who is new to the Snatcher games.

SD Snatcher is interesting case. It's also released for MSX so you can't expect much of it, if you are looking for graphics. But the thing why it's so unique is because the game genre is not adventure styled detectivesimulator but Action RPG. Yes, truly different than anyother Snatcher game... the plot and characters are basicly the same as in other versions but much have been changed and added for this game. I think this is good game for those who are played SEGA CD version just once and liked it.

And that's not all, there is of course more versions, but they are not playable in English.

I played the MSX Snatcher first, then SD Snatcher, and then the Sega CD version. I think it's the best thing I could've ever done. It's very unfortunate that I hadn't played the PCE version before the Sega CD one.

The MSX version has the best soundtrack, the graphics are mostly the same (but in 16 color), and the loading is annoying (try to play in a MSX Turbo F). The very nice to see the evolution the game went through.

Disagree about the MSX version featuring the best soundtrack. For me, that award belongs to the PC88 version.

You just can't anymore retro than hearing vintage 80's FM synthesizers in a video game.

But anyway, yeah, start with the Sega CD version. That's the first version of the game that I played.

That's a man with a good taste. I like the PC88 version too, but the MSX one was my first Snatcher experience, so maybe that's why I prefer it. Both soundtracks are pretty much the same level for me.

Sega CD first, no doubt, unless you speak Japanese. If you're a hardcore PCE nerd like me, then you'll have fun comparing the Sega CD version to the PCE afterwards. For historical sake though, might be better to play the PC88 and MSX versions after the Sega CD though.

Just finished playing through. It was entertaining and im glad i played it...but MaAaaan was the plot terrible. It was so bad it was funny. And the voiceacting...i cant remember the last time a game made me laugh this hard for being bad. I dont regret playing it.
