Freezing issue on emulator
Freezing issue on emulator
Alright, first off, I'll admit, I'm not the most educated when it comes to emulators and such. So, please bear with me as I try to explain my problem.
I'm playing Snatcher for the first time right now. I'm using Kega Fusion (I use a mac) emulator to play the sega CD iso I downloaded (in case it's important, what I downloaded has the iso image, and 21 mp3 audio files for it). I have the BIOS and everything, and, it was playing just fine. However, when I leave Junker HQ to go to the factory ruins (first time, after Gibsons call for backup), I get in the turbocycle, and as it's "departing" it freezes on the image below (running the animation actually) and will continue to play the sound effect.
Can anyone help me? Any more info I need to supply? It'd be greatly appreciated, and thank you

Re: Freezing issue on emulator
iso/mp3 rips of snatcher are notorious for freezing in that spot. i know for a fact though that if you have an actual copy of the game, or a good (bin/cue) rip of it that the mac version of Kega will work fine through that spot on the rest of the game. you may be able to get past that spot with a better cue sheet, but I'm not 100% sure that will work.
Re: Freezing issue on emulator
Well, I've been searching for various iso's and such all night, and every one of them is the same as mine, no fix. Again, I just have the iso + the mp3 files, and I use kega fusion, just loading straight of the iso. I'm going to keep looking, but, if anyone can help narrow down the search, it'd be a great help.
Thanks again

Re: Freezing issue on emulator
Maybe if you can find a only ISO version... It would be much bigger than the ISO+MP3 (kinda like 300MB, I think).
Re: Freezing issue on emulator
I'm still trying to get a "good" image. Goodness, over the last two days I've probably downloaded and deleted at least 2-3 gb of Snatcher iso's. I neeeeed this game D:

Re: Freezing issue on emulator
Do you hear Gillian's voice over start and end and then it starts looping? or does it just start looping? if you don't hear the voice over at all you check to make sure you have the mp3s in the same directory and named properly. i've heard some people say that could be if problem. if you still have a problem then, i can rip a cue sheet for you and see if that helps, or maybe post a save state or something.
Re: Freezing issue on emulator
they're all in the right spot, I've checked. A cue sheet or a save would be wonderful help, I'd really appreciate it!
Oh, and no Gillian's voice, just the annoying buzzing sound or whatever looping

Re: Freezing issue on emulator
Well, I have another solution if NOTHING else works...
Use virtual desktop or something similar to play the game in GENS emulator (A Win XP emulator). I got tired of trying to make it work in kega as well, so that's what I did with my macbook.
I know it's not the most sophisticated solution, but if you run out of options you have at least something to fall back on.

Re: Freezing issue on emulator
I'll keep that in mind, thank you. But I'd really rather get it working on Kega IF it's possible. Otherwise, I'll just go with that.

Re: Freezing issue on emulator
here is the cue sheet, sorry it took me a while to find it. it was on my desktop when lately ive been away and using my laptop more often than not. obviously you'll have to rename the binary to whatever your ISO is, and then rename each of the audio tracks on the cue sheet as well. hopefully this helps, because i dont know when ill have time to play through the first bit of the game to get a save file if it doesnt.
EDIT: attachment didnt work, just gonna post it in spoiler tags

Ok, so I want to make sure I've done this right. Below I attached a screen shot of the directory Snatcher is in. Plus the cue sheet you gave me that I edited. Please let me know if I messed something up?

Re: Freezing issue on emulator
activate perfect sync (ctrl+p) in fusion or the game locks.
Re: Freezing issue on emulator
I already have that going, I made sure of it. I'm pretty sure I didn't do that cue sheet right, so, I'm hoping someone will correct me so I can see if Supergrom's cue sheet fixes my problem.

Re: Freezing issue on emulator
its been quite a while since i messed around with iso/mp3 rips, and the best resource that i used back then (Segaxtreme) is only forums now, i dont see any of their guides. I think that you have to name each of the CD tracks in the cue sheet though, so it says "'Snatcher 02.mp3' AUDIO" (with quotes) instead of "Snatcher 02 AUDIO". also make sure that you load the game from the cue sheet, not the ISO once you do that
EDIT: actually, i just did a google search for a cue sheet example and i found a post by an old segaxtreme member giving a pretty good example. go to http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4003 and look down the page for lordofduct's post, and follow his instructions on the cue sheet. I think you wanna leave the numbers on there though for snatcher, otherwise the audio will get out of sync.

Re: Freezing issue on emulator
I really wish I knew more about what I was doing. I tried using that, and it didn't work. At one point it started looping right before the videophone call from Gibson and stuck there. But then I changed the cue sheet some more like in the model, and now it's just back to what it was. Dang.
Thanks a lot for all the help though. I know it's a hassle

Re: Freezing issue on emulator
This problem has been bugging the crap out of me, so i downloaded an ISO/mp3 rip and gave it a go. With the generic cue sheet here i got past the turbocycle ride, but the weird part is that it never even showed gillian in the turbocycle. so that makes me nervous as far as future cut scenes go that are important to the story. I'm gonna keep trying later hopefully. i have some save files now if for some reason this doesnt work.

Re: Freezing issue on emulator
Unfortunately, it didn't work. So, if it's no trouble, I'll give the save files a try. Thank you again

Re: Freezing issue on emulator
I'm starting to think that you either have a bad rip or you're doing something else wrong. but my save file is attached anyway.

Well, the file type's not right, I'm using Kega Fusion for mac, it has a .gsx extension. But, I'm doing something wrong, or just can't find a good iso, so, I think I'm just going to forget it for now maybe I'll have better luck later, this has been so much trouble it's almost putting me off the game.

Re: Freezing issue on emulator
im also using kega fusion on a mac (version 3.52i). two macs in fact. *.gsx files are save states. *.brm files are the internal memory. Both go in Users/(your user name)/Library/Application Support/Kega Fusion by default, unless you've changed that directory in your preferences.
Edit: also just found this:

Edit again:
read somewhere else that converting to wav works. tried that and it worked like a charm (converted all mp3s to wavs, and then changed the cue sheet accordingly). an actual CD or at least a good copy of one is still the best way to go, but i can now verify that with a shoddy iso/mp3 rip you can indeed play through the infamous turbo cycle scene on Kega Fusion 3.52i on an intel mac.

that is most likely why it is not working, haha.Currently SegaCD support is via BIN/CUE only, I may add to this, but to be honest, BIN/CUE is the best option anyway.

Re: Freezing issue on emulator
Well, I converted them to wav files and it still didn't work for me, so, I don't know, I probably messed up the cue sheet somewhere.
Re: Freezing issue on emulator
I had this same problem....
It was due to me mis-labeling the Mp3 tracks, All I had to do was properly name the tracks in the correct order and it worked just fine after that.
EDIT : I will look into this and post the correct labels/track listing

Re: Freezing issue on emulator
OK, I'm gonna go through the whole process step by step because this long list of posts could be confusing. BUT before that, i will just reiterate that this is by far the best option.
barring that, or assuming that you want to back up your own copy as an ISO/mp3 rip (which logic i dont understand given the present ease of aquiring hard drive space and bandwidth ), this is how you would play it on Kega Fusion 3.52i on an Intel Mac.
1) Verify that your files are named correctly. The ISO should be called "Snatcher.iso", and the mp3s should be called "Snatcher 02.mp3" through "Snatcher 21.mp3" and all 22 of those files should be in the same directory.
2) Convert all those mp3s to wavs. This step effectively defeats the purpose of compressing the mp3s in the first place (saving storage space/bandwidth) but must take place because apparrently fusion for mac doesnt support mp3s yet. I used a free program called switch that was easy to use and pretty fast.
3) make a plain text file called "Snatcher.cue" and paste the following cue sheet (in the spoiler tags) inside it. Make sure that it is a plain text file, not RTF or some other text format that the built in TextEdit program on OSX will try to save it as. I recommend TextWrangler, once again free software.
4) open Kega Fusion and push file > Load Sega CD Image. navigate to the directory with your snatcher files in it, and open "Snatcher.cue", NOT "Snatcher.iso"
5) Assuming your bios and everything is loaded correctly, you should be able to start the game. You will know if your CD audio is working correctly if when the main snatcher Screen pops up you hear "Snatcher 02.wav"
If that doesnt work, I'm willing to bet your rip is bad. Buy a Sega Cd, and snatcher (and a justifier while you're at it) and enjoy Snatcher the way it was meant to be played.

Re: Freezing issue on emulator
Finally! I found a working version of Snatcher. This wasn't an iso with mp3 files, just a .bin with a .cue file included. Thank you all for your help, it's nice to know I can come here for any problems I might have, and I appreciate your patience. Now, I'm off to play Snatcher!
