Re: Next project
I have to admit this game is intriguing... It also has the greatest boxart ever.
Is this game going to, for real, be $300 to acquire? Would it be cheaper if you were actually in Akihabara?
Edit: I realized that the $300 copy on eBay was sealed and open ones have sold in Germany for about $150. There's gotta be some hope for a better deal on the ground in Japan.

Re: Next project
There’s a Romhacking.net page for the project.
It says that English translation of Dead of The Brain 1 is beginning, who exactly is doing the English Translation Part?
It also says Dave Shadoff & Tomaitheous our working on it and it seems the main focused right now is to finish the French version of the patch.

Re: Next project
The project isn't dead, but technically hasn't progressed in about 2 years due to being too busy. Might be time to "reanimate" the project (though free time has always been the constraint).
To clarify, we have a fully-translated text (in french) for both DotB 1 and DotB 2, and were last seen dealing with a relatively complex bug in the print routine. Reinsertions weren't able to play-test as a result.
I have been studying Japanese for a good long time now, which is actually where a good deal of that missing time went to. While I had started translating the text of DotB 1, I didn't get very far before I had to put it aside. I found it pretty challenging because there were quite a lot of context-sensitive statements which I didn't have the context for (based on only the script extract, since I haven't played the game through).
Any interested translator with perseverance and real Japanese ability (JLPT2 or better) is welcome.
If anything worth announcing occurs, I'll post something here.

I don't think they ever got a hacker for the project, probably because everyone thought it wasn't worth there time to work on translation project for a game that is already available and professionally translated in English. Which i completely understand.

Re: Next project
Yeah, I wouldn't want to translate it either. There are very few changes, and those arent even major. I really don't see the point in putting all that hard work into it just have have fans react by comparing it to their precious Sega CD version and then criticising it.
I'll give you 3 reasons as to why not to translate it. (No. 2 applies to the PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions aswell.)
1.) PC-Engine CD games are set up in a non standard format. The Data Tracks are essentially just one large sum of binary with all the Game Data lumped together and burned to the disc. This is some Serious Shit I'm talking about. Many programs have a hard time reading the Audio Tracks from a Super CD game! Let's not even talk about copying them...
2.) The Character space is too big. This is okay for Japanese which uses a large character space for Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana; but the Pre-Existing English font takes up the same amount of space as the Japanese one because all the characters are the same size. To be able to fit all the text would be absurd. Either text would need to be cut, or the font would need to be reworked, both of which are unacceptable and nearly impossible respectively.
3.) There simply arent enough differnces to make it worthwhile. Sure some Music is different and it has superb Japanese voice acting directed by Mr. Kojima himself, but what else other than censorship is to see... A better color pallet? Get real. Why is it that people go nuts over Nudity and Gore? Did it detract from the story at all?
Why do people think translating a port with so little differnces is better than translating a port with a hell of alot? (PS/SS versions) There not as bad as people say. I feel if people could understand it then they could actually enjoy the game for what its worth ranther than just nitpick.

Re: Next project
The reason the PC-Engine version was being picked for a translation is because it's considered by many to be the most pure unadulterated version of the game with no cuts or censoring, even if some of the censoring done in the later versions was probably for the better, and was all developed by Hideo Kojima himself.
Having an English version of the PC-Engine Snatcher would have been nice but not necessary, especially considering they were planning on just reinserting the Sega CD script in to the game.

Re: Next project
I agree with you, But I still don't find it worth the effort just to be able to play a slightly differnt version of a game you can play normally on a differnt system, especially with all the technical problems I've already mentioned.
As for the approval of Kojima, I don't see whats the big deal. Sure its his game, but thats not to say that if it doesn't go by him then its no good.
Reinserting the text from the Sega CD version? What is this, a fucking joke! I can't stress enough how that won't work. If they did, it would require recoding the Text Display, Font, and other Graphical Display Routines; which will take forever or just wont happen.
I forgot to mention that theres no way to translate the spoken scenes and display them along with the game without trying to modify the game, which is rediculous considering Act 3. I mean come on, look how long the Policenauts translation took, even after Slowbeef joined; and they didn't have to do anywhere near the amount of work that would take.
If there's truly anything I want to see, its a re-translation of the MSX2 version.
The grammar is truly ludicrous in the way it bounces from perfecty good English to just plain stupidity.
((COMMAND))((BLASTER))
Metal: "Remember the Junker 5 bylaws, you cant just hurt around the people."
I understand his first language isn't English, but they could have at least let someone proof read it. On top of that some lines are even accidentally left in Portuguese from the original translation! The sad part is it will probably never get fixed, same with SD Snatcher. Would you ever expect Gillian to walk into a Morgue and call it a "CHARNEL ROOM", (It said "Morgue" in the Japanese version!) or Metal to say "CHEER UP MAN" after Gillian finds out he worked on the Snatchers?
The game has spelling errors up the ass: "OFF COURSE" and "THREATH", seriously?
I'm not ungrateful, but this is just too sad a situation to be left alone. Just like the Illusion City translation; 6 of the 8 Disks get translated and then the hacker just up and decides to sell his MSX equipment and leaves without any warning or letting anyone continue.

Re: Next project
That happened because of several reasons. I dumped the Japanese text, Takamichi translated it and sent it o me. I published that. Then I noticed Daniel was doing a Portuguese translation based on that, and he did it by himself with what was available. So it is basically a miracle that exists... made completely without communication between the parts. You'd have to ask Daniel for his tools to re-do the work.GirianSeed573 wrote: I understand his first language isn't English, but they could have atleast let someone proof read it. Re: Next project
So, did Daniel just use Takamichi's translation or did he translate it to English from the Portuguese text?
Takamichi seems to have better English than what went into Snatcher.
Its really a shame about Illusion City (Genei Toshi). They really did a great job with what they were doing.
They were even converting it for compatability with the MSX2/2+ instead of just leaving it on the MSX Turbo-R, so they'd have a greater number of players.
I really want to get into that game, but I also really want to play it through to the end.
From what I've played so far its very impressive, and the English translation is good too.
I've heard talk of translating the Mega-CD version (which is more or less a port of the MSX one) but I've never heard anything about it being done...

I meant it wouldn’t even be a different take on the translation.GirianSeed573 wrote:Reinserting the text from the Sega CD version? What is this, a fucking joke! I also think it wouldn't be worth the effort, even with a new translation but if someone enjoys the challenge of hacking something like this and wants to do it I wouldn't try to stop him nor be upset about it.

Okay, thanks for clearing that up Artemio.
No one really answered my question as to why poeple Flip Out over Censorship...
I mean, is it really that big of a deal?

In Snatcher's case, no it's not that big a deal.GirianSeed573 wrote:No one really answered my question as to why poeple Flip Out over Censorship...

People just get worked up over it because they removed something from the game without Hideo Kojima's consent.
I'm actually happy with some of the stuff they censored in later version of the game, mainly Katrina’s age and the shower scene, which is kind of... creepy and messed up in the PC-Engine and MSX versions if you ask me.

Its kind of Creepy and Hilarious at the same time... (Gender ID )
Keep in mind that 14 is the 18 of many other countries (including Japan).
Its some thing that would clash with another culture without localization changes. Although I do agree that alot of changes were made for the better.
Again, I don't see what the point of Mr. Kojima's approval is. As long as it actually benefits the game, its fine.
Perhaps its just blind fanboy-ism? Its rediculous how much people credit him with. They act like he infuences every stage of development. You'd be suprised how much slips under his nose and how much he didn't even contribute to...

Re: Next project
I have to empathise, PC-Engine CD isn't easy to deal with, even emulating it is a lot tougher than Sega Cd. The other day, I put random mp3s with my copy of Sonic CD to play on my PSP emulator, no problem. I then tried to play a 'Proper' rip of Snatch Romantic on my PSP and still haven't managed to get it working.
So I can imagine how much difficulty would go into re-programming it.
Shame though, I guess for me, it's about playing it on the actual format. Imagine getting a PC-Engine and playing Snatcher on it with the actual pad, and being able to understand it. Small mercies I suppose.

I'd love that too JonnyTonna...

Re: Next project
I don't mind the censorship and it's understandable, especially for the time the SCD version was released. However I do mind the changed soundtrack and there was really no reason to do that shit.
My first exposure to Snatcher was the trailer from the Pilot Disk and what I loved most was the music in it. But the first version I've played was the SCD version and I was so disappointed when I never heard any of my favourite songs from the trailer. At first I assumed they composed them specifically for the trailer but then I heard Eternal Promise/Faded Memories/Beyond Sorrows on the Zoom Tracks CD and kinda put 2 and 2 together. The Sega CD soundtrack has since been a huge turn off for me, never mind that the PSX/SS versions are even worse.
