some time last month they added a new update on their progress.
Finished a new mapper version with fully automated SCC search. Support up to 16 SCC cartridges; the best option present is automatically selected. Downgrading is also possible (SCC+ -> SCC/PSG/NO MUSIC). The SCC cartridge can be located in the sub-slot. So, at this moment, any SCC cartridge available can be used to play the game!

I love that they are sticking with the original years (Prologue in 1991; Main Story in 2042), rather than have them five years ahead, like in the Sega CD version. I don't know why Marc and Artemio (No offense intended to them, BTW) used the Sega CD years for Sdatcher (which actually takes place in 2038, not 2043). I personally prefer the original years myself.

We did so because in localization we prefer the mentality of choosing the options that are familiar to the public that will consume it. Hence we changed the eye color in the image, and in general opted for the material that the English version established.

We assume that the intended audience played Snatcher in English, not in Japanese.

I respect the purist position, but I like to be consistent. Not selecting bits that match previous translations and bits that don't, with Sdatcher there was an official precedent. With SD Snatcher there is really none.

I totally understand, even though I stand by my original opinion.

What I wonder is what was the reason Kojima chose June 6, 1991 and December 2042, when he made the original game 25 years ago? Could he have known the future? As we all know, 1991 was the same year the Soviet Union fell.

And I didn't notice this before, but June 6, 1996 in the Sega CD version could very well represent "666".

22 December 2013 Rieks finished the final testplay and encountered no software issues. He did come up with a few minor textual improvements and decided to annoy Max with those, even though the project seems to be (almost?) ready for release.

15 December 2013 Max fixed all new issues and updated the version to 0.9.0 - the pre-release version! Max also did extensive testing on a real MSX2, MSX2+ and MSX Turbo R with flash cartridges to ensure full compatibility.

12 December 2013 Max found new issues that required to be fixed.

9 December 2013 Max finished all planned updates for all three disks. Max started the final testplay!
... Christmas release?

I got the following email just now. It indeed looks like they are almost ready for release!
Dear all,

It took much more time than we anticipated, but Project Melancholia, the new SD Snatcher English translation patch, is almost ready for release!

In preparation of the release, we offer you, who preordered a copy of the translation patch, the possibility of paying in advance, so that we can send you the translation patch as soon as it is ready, without having to endure any further delay because payment still has to be verified.

We will send the patch to you as soon as a) it is ready for release and b) payment is verified. The patch will be sent to you by e-mail.

Payment can be done in two ways: by (international) bank transfer or by PayPal. In both cases, any transaction costs will be for you.

Bank transfer:
Transfer EUR 10 to the following Dutch bank account number:
IBAN: NL22ABNA0467019177; BIC/SWIFT: ABNANL2A in the name of H. Warendorp Torringa, Cruquiuslaan 156, 2332 EA Leiden, The Netherlands.
Make sure to mention your name and e-mail address.

PayPal:
Transfer EUR 10 (excl. transaction costs) to rikusu@hotmail.com (Rieks Warendorp Torringa); make sure to mention your name and e-mail address.

We can't tell exactly when the patch will be released, but we expect it to be on short notice. We hope it will be in the next couple of days, but it may take a little longer.

In case you did preorder but - after all the time that has passed - don't want a copy anymore, please let us know by e-mail and we will remove you from the list.

Kind regards and happy holidays,

on behalf of Project Melancholia,
Rieks Warendorp Torringa

Wait...they are charging for the patch?

Out of respect to Konami, and Kojima it should be FREE for everyone, as they don't own the Snatcher IP.
I can understand taking "Donations" for their hard work, but charging/pre-ordering for the patch is just plain wrong IMHO.

Artemio, Marc, and SlowBeef etc. didn't charge us for their hard work on the Policenauts patch.

I have been asked, and even begged to take "Donations" for my project, but I've turned it all down.
We are building a game from scratch, and that involves a lot more work than what they are doing (no offense), and we will be releasing it for FREE.

I find what they are doing to be a great community service, but this rubs me the wrong way.

>give us money for patch
Well, excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me, princess, I'm not gonna do that. With all due respect for the hard work the translators have done, it's fucked up that they're demanding money for the patch. Donations are fine, as long as they're not shoving 'em up your throat.

UPD: There were too much 'u's and I accidentally broke the site template while writing them so I removed the 1MB worth of 'u's. Sorry.

Oh boy, a redone translation of SD Snatcher! Can't wait to download it!
...Oh I have to pay for it? Lame. I hope it's not too expensive!
... It's 12.50? Ehhhh that price seems a bit hefty. I don't think I can--
... Wait that's euros? I wonder what the price in US dollars is?
... There's no price for that on the site? Well that's a tad inconvenient. :/
TL;DR this might be convenient for some of us non-europeans should you choose to pay

$17.15 isn't too bad of a price, but I still have objections about paying for a fan translation. I mean, I understand part of the reasoning behind it (as an investment so the group can take on future projects that might require some money), but I just can't justify it. This whole thing feels wrong, even for an amoral pirate like me.

Maybe that's precisely why you feel that way. And I am not judging, it just makes sense from your perspective. I am the opposite, I don't pirate a thing.

I don't believe in charging people for my hobbies though, and for Policenauts and the other projects I've always been completely against charging anything for several more reasons. That's why my sites never have adds or donations.

However, it is their work they are charging for, for their patch. Not for the game, it is up to everyone who wants it if their work is worth it or not, regardless if you like the idea of them charging for it. I did pay them, because that's what they chose and I truly believe they did a great work. I respect their decision.

Yeah, exactly my thoughts as well.
People are generally quick to persecute people that sell their emulators/fan translation works. However, these same people usually don't think twice before buying reproduction carts/flashcarts, which are more or less in the same ball park. As much as people like to say "I will not support this because it is shady", in reality the real reason is that fan translations have this stigma of being "free" and people have devalued them to that price.

Now I'm not saying that all fan translations should charge money or that I necessarily promote this sort of distribution, I'm just saying that there's nothing heretical with someone making that choice. The team that made this has not only re-translated the entire game, but has even improved it in many ways. Think of the price tag as more of a donation then anything really.

EDIT: The team answers this question directly on their order page
Why ask money?

We know some people tend to dislike the idea of having to pay money for an MSX related production. However, we put much time and effort in realizing this translation, which of course we did because we loved doing it, but that doesn't mean we don't like to be able to drink a few beers on your account because you're enjoying our work, either. And that's not all: we have more plans for the future, and some of those might cost a little money, so we might be reinvesting any money we earn with this project in future projects. If you don't like paying money, it's fine with us, but in that case, please be consistent and leave our translation.

Also, please bear in mind that we are not asking money for software Konami created; the data that is distributed in the package, is data authentically created by ourselves, be it text or code. You still need a to provide for a copy of the original game yourself, as it is not included in the package.

I only heard about this on an unrelated IRC channel a few weeks ago and just found out it actually did get released tonight.

Now I'm hoping they comment about sales of the translation. No, seriously, not being cynical here; just curious how big their market is.
