I like this thread better. The opening post isn't as aggressive and the thread-maker has actually bothered to list some of his own. I've nothing to contribute to it, though.

My favorite movie? Probably "The Wall" by Pink Floyd...

Just steer clear of the Director's Cut.

Think of it in the same way as Lucas' director's cut of the original Star Wars trilogy. Greedo shoots first, an unimposing CG Jabba, Hayden Christiansen in the final line-up, and a bad dance number round out Lucas' "improvements". Of course, I haven't seen the Donnie Darko director's cut, so I can't tell you specifically what's worse about that version in comparison to the original, but directors who can't help but needle with their work years after its initial completion (almost always through the use of CG) are never a good thing. I never even liked Donnie Darko though, so I'm already kind of biased towards the director's cut.

comically it was this which got me back into the entire DD thing, for me, i felt the Directors Cut basically laid the story down to plain for the audience, in the original, i felt it was more open to thought and interperitation, where this one didnt, and plus, digital dreams, what was that about, i am going to buy the theatrical cut as it is soo cheap and see what was added too the DC cause i didnt think too much was but it seems way longer than the theatrical, if anyone has it what was its running time, the DC was about 2hours 10minutes

Just check out the IMDb to find out the differences between both versions.

I agree random it seemed that they tried to make it more accessible for a larger audience, which took away some parts that were open for the audience to interpret.
Also some of the cuts from the scenes and especially the music changes gave parts of the film a different atmosphere and emotion. I personally feel that the added cg wasnt necesary because it took away the ambiguity from a few of the scenes as to what was actually happening.

I don't necessarily dislike the Director's Cut, I just prefer the original by a long margin. The Director's Cut makes everything too clear, and loses some magic because of it. It is of course though Kelly's right to do what he likes with the re-release, I'm just glad the original is available.

In fact though, if I remember rightly, the original version was already how it was meant to be and he just added stuff for the Director's Cut (i.e. it wasn't populated with scenes already filmed). I just heard that from a friend though...

I think, for the Director's Cut, he just put the scenes back in that he was forced to take out in the first place, in order to keep the running time down. I don't think there are any alterations to the scenes that were already there (unless there are - I don't know, I haven't seen it).

According to my DVD, the original's running time is 108 minutes, by the way.

Well, there was 20 minutes of "never-before-seen-footage" which I would have to assume could not include deleted scenes from the first DVD which was popular enough to warrant the DC in the first place. There was also the aforementioned CG in between the cutscenes.

Here's my DD thing:

My girlfriend and I saw it two and a half years ago or so and really loved it. We watched it many times. She made me a Frank the Bunny outfit for halloween (a really good one, too). We watched it more. She's finishing school as a fashion designer and used the movie as her inspiration for her senior line (which won a nice award, no less). We went to go see the Director's Cut in the theaters and I remember thinking it was ok, if a little over the top with the meaning. I bought her the DVD for her birthday this May.

Two weeks ago she says that I should probably take the DVD back, she's not going to watch it. Now, thinking that I bought a crappy gift or her taste in movies has suddenly shifted violently, ask why. She says, "I've already seen the original soo many times that there's nothing to watch the DC for." I think that's how most fans of the original feel: The many different mysteries and things left out of the original is what really made it so rewatchable. Everything's out in the open in the DC.

Not to mention, it is quite noticeably longer. Sometimes, cuts are good.

It's only 20 minutes longer, I wouldn't say that was loads, but otherwise yeah - the Directors' Cut is just too much. Much of the inserted stuff doesn't only explain too much, thus reducing the capacity for interpretation, but it's just intrusive and dissimilar from the rest of the movie.

I think most of what was included in the DC was just simply not needed, it was fine as it was

Ichi The Killer in every way is a great film, i would be simply lying to myself if i said it was not a favourite, Kakihara, the lead in the film, is in my opinion, one of the coolest on screen characters ever created, and the ending on the roof top is nothing short os masterful, when Ichi is chasing Kakihara, the camera work and music is so great, i could go on further but i wont, just go see the film, and if i havn't said it befoe, Bubba Ho-Tep is also a favourite of mine
