MG movie confirmed

Post by Marc »

It was announced by Kojima in the latest Hidechan that they are indeed doing a Hollywood MG film. No other details yet.

Sounds awkward, yet interesting. I didn't think Kojima ever had any plans to do a movie, or let anyone else do a MGS movie. If he really is involved, that could be great, but I highly doubt that.

I'm sure he'll at least be approving the script, etc.

Hopefully this will be a Metal Gear movie, not necessarily a Metal Gear Solid movie. There's a real opportunity here to expose people to the parts of the MG saga that they're not familiar with-- gamers included. Ideally, they could start with a Kill Bill style two-parter, one film covering Outer Heaven (MG0 and the second detailing the Zanzibar Land Uprising (MG2:SS).

I'm interested to see how the pull off the casting here-- how many Japanese-American actors are there out there who could fill the roles of Big Boss and Snake? Would the filmmakers be tempted to try and wedge characters like Ocelot or Raiden into the stories while preserving continuity (Ocelot as Shalashaska, perhaps, hunting down Gray Fox while staying out of Snake's way as an opperative for BB or the <B>Patriots</B>-- Jack could easily be included among the war orphans of ZL, perhaps amongst other characters who canonically are part of Outer Heaven's forces, like Sniper Wolf or Vulcan Raven)? Hopefully, Kojima can co-write the script himself, and perhaps even co-direct in the same way that Lucas co-helmed ESB and ROTJ (without credit) or Frank Miller shared the same duties on Sin City.

Was it stated specifically that it would be a Metal Gear or Metal Gear Solid movie?

The voice actress who plays Mei Ling and Paramedic just asked Kojima and Murashu why don't they consider making a movie (since MGS4 looks so cinematic, she commented), and Kojima replied, Actually we are. He didn't specifiy MG or MGS.

I'm not so sure I like the Metal Gear movie idea... It's like something I just read about the Silent Hill movie, that is, at a videogame movie's very best, they will just make you wish you were playing the videogame.

I don't see them carrying over the Japanese-American angle. Count on an American actor playing Snake/Big Boss.

That would be fun, but unless someone like Tarentino is the director, I don't think any studio would bankroll a true two-parter for an unproven movie franchise like MG. Also, the storylines from the first two games (MG, especially), while movie-like for videogames at the time, don't really have enough the grabbing turns of the Solid games for a movie audience, IMHO.

You never know. Anything based on a popular franchise (gaming or otherwise) usually is guarenteed hit in the box office.

That does seem likely, as Snake himself in the games has gotten progressively less and less Japanese in his appearance. Big Boss' blue eyes is what may have clinched it. I still think it would be interesting for them to try and keep that in the movie-- Hey, maybe they could do it CG and just keep all the same production/voice talent as the games. The only problem there is it would run the risk of becoming another Final Fantasy movie.

Hey-- shooting films back to back is almost standard now if you want to build a franchise. As for the storylines of the first two games--well, just because they have to be broadened doesn't mean there isn't potential for them to be adapted into great films. Imagine how Kojima could rewrite the stories to fit them into the cultural and political landscape of 1995 and 1999, just as he did for the MGS games in the 60's and 21st century. Unless Kojima ever considers remaking the MG games up to the same standards of current generation graphics and gameplay (not to mention updating the now anachronistic ideas throughout MG2:SS), this could be his best chance to establish a genuine continuity for the series.

Just to make this as clear as possible.. here is what I understood (Osiris, please correct me if I am wrong)
Houko Kuwashima: I'd like to watch a movie...(referring to MGS4) It is like a movie, isn't it?

Kojima Hideo: It became a movie!

Houko Kuwashima: (Laughs)

Kojima Hideo: At Hollywood....

Houko Kuwashima: Ehhhhhh!!!!!!!!!
And they later say that it is being made in English.

Just keep in mind that my Japanese is not that good, Marc can correct me later.

From memory...

They're talking about MGS4 before this (and how Mei Ling will be in MGS4 and how Paramedic will be in a/the PSP MG game - this is interesting). She was shown a trailer for MGS4, and comments at how cinematic it looks. She then asks them, "Why don't you make a movie?" And Kojima replies, "We are. A Hollywood movie." Then she asks if it's going to be released soon, and Kojima says he can't talk about its release date.

Anyone know how reliable jeux-france is? According to them:
Hideo Kojima wrote:'It's going to be a Hollywood film. It won't be that German director [Uwe Boll]. Viggo Mortensen would make a perfect Snake, but maybe he's a little too old. Metal Gear Solid, which was set in Alaska, would make a perfect setting for the movie.'

Didn't they start the "Frank Miller is working on the PSP MGS comic game" rumor? (which I tried to explain to people was false).

The MG games are so cinematic that you don't need a movie. But I'm going to see it all the same. I'm sure it will be great!

Snake is an American. This is proven by the fact that the solid games focus on the U.S government, and Snake's real name David is not a Japanese name.

Snake has Eastern blood as well, as exemplified by Raven's line:

The Raven has put the mark of death upon you. Blood from the east flows within your veins. Ah... your ancestors too were raised on the barren plains of Mongolia. Inuit and Japanese are cousins to each other... We share many ancestors, you and I...

Since he's a clone, it must go back to Big Boss's geneology.

Snake is half British, half Japanese. Anyway, Metal Gear Solid movie is seemingly going to be based on the 'Aslaka' script of MGS1 -- Kojima has said that it'd translate well for the movie. I just hope they get an actor capable of portraying Liquid and Solid properly.

In MetalGear 1+2 Snake was British/Japanese, but they made him American/Japanese for MGS. Couldn't tell you why, though.

Who needs another re-telling of MGS1? It sounds like Kojima's really phoning this one in. Of course, not that this would be any different than the majority of game-based films.... err.... all game-based films, but I'm surprised he's collaborating on such an effortless idea. Still, effortless or not, I guess this is the only way to shut people up who are desperate for Metal Gear to be made into a film. He's such a push-over.
