Honestly I don't know how you all have kept at this project for so long. Thank you for taking the next step towards finishing the project. I just read the past 8 pages of this thread (which took a lot longer than you might think), and I realized that I've been a bit of a ghost since last semester. I would say keep at it, but that doesn't even the slightest bit necessary.

I have another question.
As I read through slowbeefs description of things yet to be done with the patch one mind-flabbergasting question popped to mind. I got the impression that most of the work that's still not done has to be made by hand, using tedious methods and building it pixel-by-pixel with blood, sweat and tears...
So my question was that does it just seem like that, or are you guys on the way to establishing a "Help Group For Traumatized Policenauts-Translation-Project Programmers"?

Dude, I'm a programmer. We're too lazy to do shit by hand.
No, all our patch methods do or will use graphical files like BMPs or PNGs, or text files.
Also, summaries are installed, so 3 more beta features to go. And the end credits...

Hahaha.
Anyways, it's great that you're so seemingly close to get the beta completed!
Are the remaining beta features tough to deal with?

...Very.
Most in-game graphics are all compressed. Scarboy's got a decompressor almost going. The recompressor is going to be nearly impossible to recreate, so we're going to see if we can make a crappier version that basically tells it to draw the pixels we want it to. That will cover telops and graphical changes.
Solving that will leave cinema overlays which Artemio is working on.
I've sorta got downtime, so I"m helping out where I can, but also trying to bug hunt.

ummm, i only know a little about programming but how do you write a decompressor w/o writing a recompressor? i mean, i know you'd have to reverse the algorithm but i'm assuming the problem is more than that. if so, how did write a decompressor w/o the original algorithm?
btw, been following this a while and THANKS EVERYONE FOR ALL THE HARD WORK!! but especially for the recent technical updates, i really enjoy reading this stuff

It's easy, you just look at exactly what the game does to decompress the image and you port it to another language. The compressor is the difficult part because you actually have to understand the algorithm and do it backwards.

If anyone wants to show their tits, then please start another thread. Or better yet: use that great and wonderful button next to peoples' names that says "Send Message."

If you're a girl, and you're reading this right now, go ahead and PM me a topless. A simple webcam photo will do, unless you've got a nicer camera handy. Much appreciated, and happy new year.

Man, January 2009 is going to mark TWO FULL YEARS since it was announced the translation was finished and everyone got excited, expecting the patch sometime in summer '07... geez, were we wrong. Two long years of fevered anticipation, and the project itself goes all the way back to around 2002...

Shit happens.
It is amazing that even though that deadline has been reached and left WAY behind, I'm sure almost everyone kept looking forward to this release, at the point that it didn't matter how sad/dissapointed we were, we just couldn't avoid taking a look at this thread for news.
Does it matter now? not really... beta stage, man!
It just cannot take another year, can it?
