Ah. The name change was a bit pointless then.

Well SoA called the Japanese "Sega Mega Drive" the "Sega Genesis" for its US release. The original name stuck for a European, release, though. The European and Japanese name for the Sega CD is the "Mega CD" (because It has a CD player rather than a Cartridge Drive). Not wanting to sound connected to the original Mega Drive name, SoA called it the "Sega CD" for American release.
I only mentioned the difference in my post incase someone thought it was a typo.

Actually, I think the Mega CD version of Snatcher didn't have any of the additions that were made on the Sega CD version. You still have CD quality sound and the English VO's, but aside from that, I think it was an exact duplicate of the PC-ROMantic version. I'm not entirely sure though, so I may be wrong.

Also, 87th, since you've got a Master System, I was just wondering if you've ever played the game Alien Soldier by Treasure (the makers of such classics as Gunstar Heroes, Radiant Silvergun, and Ikaruga)?? I've wanted to play that game for an eternity now. You Europeans were lucky enough to get it, while us Americans got jack shit. I don't know why I'm asking you. I guess if you haven't played it, I suggest you pick it up, since you have the oppurtunity to do so (and I don't). I don't think you'd be disappointed. It's non-stop action from what I hear. Similar in many ways to Gunstar Heroes (it came out only a year later I believe).

The sega and mega cd versions of the game are 99% identical (game wise) just the ending varies in a word (you know which).

And the packaging differs obviosuly (plus the region of the game)

Is that right? Oh well, I haven't played the Mega CD version myself. I'm going by what I heard. Which was incorrect apparently.

Well, that should be a given to anyone (since European versions of games tend to have the same localization as their American counterparts, often with something extra throw in), but since this is Reasonwhynot... :p

I haven't played it, sorry. I am a huge fan of Gunstar Heroes, however. About 80% of Mega Drive games are regionless, though (I've heard that many Europeans bought a Nomad and had no trouble playing their favourite games on it), so since you're interested, you might want to see if it'll work, anyway. To be safe, try and download a ROM and a Emulator (just for a day), and put it on Genesis settings. See if the European ROM will work, if it does, go buy it!
I am interested after seeing this boss, though-

wasn't Alien Soldier for Mega Drive?
If it's the game I'm thinking then it was for Mega Drive and a great game by the way like all Treasure games

Freak Out (or Stretch Panic) is actually a good game and Guardian Heroes Advance is OK as for Wario I don't know

Does anyone here know enough japanese to truly appreciate the versions other than the sega cd. Ive been trying to get the cd ROMmantic for a while but i dont have the pc engine to play it on... saturns was a shame they removed the pleasure of tension... bastards...

Snatcher's right. I've got the Mega CD Version Snatcher (signed..ahem...*head explodes*) and the CD Romantic Version - they are far from the same game... As I'm sure someone with more version knowledge on here shall inform you the CD Romantic was most bascially the PC/MSX version with better visuals/CD quality sound and a third act. The Sega CD and Mega CD versions are 99.7% identical.

Now, some advice if you please. I am looking to pick up a PC Engine, as most of you all know there are different versions available - mine shall be a Japanese model, and I was wondering what version you would suggest - Turbo Duo for example?

By the way, the Mega CD version is my fave - I've got the Saturn version - MAN THAT FMV!!!!! Randam the Actionman! So bad... I prefered the music on the Mega CD by far - although theres a cool version of Pressure/Pleasure of tention on the ROMantic version (its one of the playable audio tracks) plus I think Gillains voice is so typically American and comical that it makes the game seem that bit more like a 1950's dectective film noir - know what I mean?

Indeed I know what you mean.. though I've been playing the CD-ROMantic version and I've liked it way better now that I understand some parts of it.

And yes, buy a Duo.. I've got a couple of them, and you'll have no trouble finding the system cards or other accesories. Duo (either american or japanese) will work perfectly (I'd go for the japanese one, unless you want to play non-cd american games).

I've played the PCE Snatcher (got it for $10 on eBay...including shipping...from Japan ) and I used an emulator called YAME. IF you're thinking about buying a Turbo Duo just for Snatcher then just use that emulator, it hasn't been updated in a while but it's free and it works fine.

As for my favorite version of Snatcher, the Sega CD version takes the cake. The PC-Engine verison comes in at a close second, but the Sega CD version combines the best qualities from all the versions into one game...the gore, some of the nudity, no icky borders, and Pleaure of Tension. Plus, you can even kill Jamie, forcing you to keep yourself on your toes.

BTW, Did anyone notice that they changed the naked snatchers' eyes from red in the Japanese releases to green in the Sega/Mega CD versions? Apparently they didn't want the Terminator people on their backs for copyright infringement.

PC-Engine CD version is really the best version. I have played it and it's true. But my favorite version is still being the Mega CD version because of being in English and some of the features added (although it's a pity the small censorship that it has).

The Sega CD version's the only one available in English (besides the fantranslated MSX version, which I need to obtain), so therefore it's the only one I've played.

I'm surprised I never posted a reply in this thread, but I suppose it's never too late.

My favorite version now is the PCE version. Before I knew Japanese it was the SCD version, for all the obvious reasons. I've come to like the PCE for a few reasons, though.

First, the graphics are crisper than the Sega CD. Second, I prefer the music. Not only the PCM music, but the Redbook as well. I don't like the changes they made to the Sega CD's music. If you've listened to the Zoom Tracks then that's the music I mean. I prefer the music in it, like when you first meet Random, and when Harry dies, etc. Another thing they changed is the slapstick song (when Gillian goofs up or something). It's more playful and Japanese, more Kojima you might even say, in the PCE. I don't have samples here, but you probably know what I mean. It sounds more subdued in the SCD version.

There are also a few scenes missing/changed, some less mentioned, like the jan-ken-pon game in Queen's Hospital, or Gillian running after the road runner (PCE) instead of hanging on to the back (SCD). I also like the voice acting in the PCE more now. I didn't like it before, and the SCD still has a great cast; this is just my preference.

It's also more complete than the previous versions (if you read the PCE manual then it says they cut the third act because of space and time, not because they didn't want to include it).

The SCD version was the first version I played, though, so I'll always appreciate it for that.

Same. I liked the PC Engine version best as well, it was truly the director's cut version I think; it was the last version of the game that Kojima actually worked on, so yeah, it's more Kojima alright.
