I saw a very cheap PlayStation mouse when I was in a GameStation in Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago. I only remembered about Policenauts a couple days after leaving there.

Which GameStation was this? I was just in Edinburgh a few days ago. I didn't look too closely at that sort of stuff, though.
Anyway, I got a PS mouse last year myself. It makes such a difference.

The two-story one on Prince's Street. Most of the second-hand/retro stuff is on the first floor, but some of the peripherals are on the ground floor. I'm pretty sure I saw a PlayStation mouse in a bag, there. This would have been around 3 weeks ago, though.
If you're in there again, you can always ask at the counter, as most of the best stuff was behind there (sealed Majora's Mask, near-mint Super Mario Kart, etc.).

Ah, okay. I won't be back for several months, but I'll try and remember next time I'm there. Thanks for the tip.

My Gamestation is rather crap, we only have a sparse amount of retro games (only ones I am particularly interested in right now) and the staff are useless. I always gets my best stuff off the net, since I've not bought anything in my local game stores in about six months now.

The quality really seems to differ drastically from town to town. The large one I found in Liverpool (not in St. John's Shopping Centre) last year was really brilliant. There was an incredible range of retro games for even quite unpopular consoles (the Saturn range was really great). The one that I usually go to in Inverness is pretty crap, though. They only have a small stand for their retro section, which covers fairly mainstream consoles at very high prices (I saw a Tekken 3 demo selling for £4!).

Am I remembering right that you live in Shetland, 87th?

Close, but no cigar. It's Orkney. No Gamestations up here, unfortunately. There's a record shop up here called "Grooves" that recently made a half-assed attempt at getting into retro gaming by selling some highly overpriced consoles (in admittedly very good condition) and some Atari 2600 games, but that's all we have in the way of retro gaming.
I'm always quite enthusiastic about visiting Gamestation stores when I'm on the mainland. I'm going to Osaka in summer (June 11th - July 11th), so I expect to be overwhelmed by Den Den Town.

I'm also moving into a flat with 3 friends in Dundee this August, so I should have a bit more choice, soon.
I know you're in the UK too, Osiris, but I've never been sure where?

Ahhh! A Scot! Well my friend, my father is Scottish (Glaswegian to be exact) and he's just come back from visiting family there just last weekend. Orkney though, can't say I've ever heard of it, I'll have to inquire with him about it. But yeah, you're right about the various Gamestations, they do differ a hell of a lot; just not enough retro gamers around these parts I don't think, unfortunately.

It's a group of islands between Shetland (the north-most Scottish islands) and mainland UK. I live on the main island, which is officially called Pomona, but no one has called it that for years. It's generally called the mainland, which makes it all the more confusing when talking about your position in the UK.

Interesting. My dad will know about it then; he practically toured all the islands nearby and his uncle worked on the docks nearby, so he will know about it. Thanks for the info.

Ah, okay. I thought it was one of the northern isles.
The cousin I bought the PS3 for actually lives in good ol' FFFundee. Maybe we could all get together next time I'm there?
Me, I was born in Greenock but grew up across the Clyde.

Yeah, sure (bear in mind I'm only moving there in late August). You're dew a few free pints after all your translations work.

Sure, I won't be there again for at least another 6 months anyway. And I might just take you up on that.

I have to fill Snake Plissken's role in this instance and say that; I bet one of you is just waiting to molest the other when you meet! Haha. I am only jesting.

The translation is complete, however it is not implemented into the game (as is my understanding) it will be done by the end of this year, however.

Correct, the translation of the text is done. The text reinsertion has been tested in the cut-scenes and it displays fine. The problem still left to fix concerns the in-game text display. It comes back distorted sometimes due to the larger English text files running off code designed for smaller Japanese text files. That's what our programmer is working on right now, and the reason it's taking all this time is because it's a complex process full of trial and error.

so this game must have compression right. this isnt a hacking job for a noob. lol that means i cant do much. so does text insertion have a problem with the pointers?

Yeah, it does have a pretty tough compression scheme, but he got around it after about a week of experimenting.
The problem with the in-game text is that the memory allocated for it doesn't always leave enough room for the entire file (there is one for each location in the game) to fit. This is what he's working on right now. He's making sure the entire translated script will fit without having to make any cuts.

Wehee... my copy of Policenauts (PSX) arriwed just today.
But since i can't understand Japanese (or at least not well enough) i'll have to wait for translation patch release before i'm going to play it.
Anyway, i think Policenauts is nice item in my MGS/Kojima games collection so i'm grateful to have that game even if i can't play it just yet.

I can tell this person is going to have one helluva time with the Saturn and PC Engine versions of the game then...

most people are going to have a hell of a time getting a finished saturn translation to run at all!
i don't think there was a pc engine version, if i'm not mistaken

I guess he meant the PC98 version.
But I suppose that version would be much harder to translate because it has no subtitles during voiced dialogues. (Instead it has talking heads...what were they thinking when they removed them from the console versions?)

As much as I liked the talking heads, it seemed to me, that it differentiated them and us; aren't games supposed to, especially in point and click adventures immserse you into the character? Therefore, removing the talking heads seemed to stop this 'them and us' feel about it all I think. Besides, I like that each version of the game offers something different, certainly makes buying all versions enjoyable actually.
