Right, Policenauts has almost as many versions as Blade Runner, haha. Almost.
And Kojima still has a poster of the game in his office! Interesting...
You can see it in this photo.

Image

They moved offices after this picture was taken, but I saw a photo of his new office and it was up there too.

Here's the full poster (from the Visual Data Book).

Image

Something interesting he's done is whenever he's had a voice actor from the game on his podcast, he always gets them to sign a framed portrait from the game. He never does this with MGS or Snatcher. He doesn't explain what it's about, though. The pictures just go up on that day's page.

Here's Hideyuki Tanaka (Jonathan).

Image

Image

You can see the original poster here, just behind Kojima's back.

Image

Then here's Kikuko Inoue (Karen).

This artwork can also be found in one of the strategy guides for the game.

Do you know whether he was really proud of his final product after all that work?
Yeah, definitely. When he wrote about the game 4 years ago for the PSone Books re-release, he said if MGS could be compared to a Hollywood blockbuster, Policenauts would be more of an independent film.
Funny thing is, that Yoji Shinkawa's first project was that game too, has he ever been vocal in his viewpoint too about the game?
Right, he did bug checking for the PC98 version, then became art director for the console versions. He likes it too. Noriaki Okamura (programmer for the game), director for ZOE1 and producer of other titles, said he doesn't think he (Okamura) will ever make a game as good as it his entire career. Shinta Nojiri (scripting and PS version assistant director), the game came up on one of the English podcasts he was on and he said, "I think it's a really cool game." Kazuki Muraoka (sound director) said it showcases Kojima the storyteller. Kumi Sato (modeller) said she considers it an honor to have been the first game she worked on after she joined Konami. Yoshikazu Matsuhana says Policenauts was the genesis of MGS, in terms of style and from a technical standpoint. Then remember what the head of Konami said about it.

But even if the game never sees an official release, I know you guys will thoroughly enjoy what comes of our project.
Translating is what you do for a living. Cool! How many languages do you work in? Japanese and English (DUH! LOL) but are there any others? Korean, Chinese? Non Asian ones?

I'd like to know. :)

Thanks again for the PN translation! You and you staff own!

Kool, I'm considering studying to become a translator too. Is it a good job?

I do mainly Japanese to English translation, but I also work the other way around occasionally. I enjoy it a lot, yeah. I like the mental process it involves. I never intended to become a translator when I started studying the language, though. It's one of those things that just sort of "happened".

Fucking sweet! Thats cool to hear.

Its been said that one really understand the language of another culture when he (she) can "get" the humor and understand the music.

That said, when you get the time translate this song:
http://rapidshare.com/files/51549375/AN ... PSY-S.flac
Just kidding! I know what it says- its one of my favorite form the 1980s J-Rock and Anime music scene. I dig it!

I like the Rosetta Stone software for learning foreign languages. My Japanese is okay all in all. Interesting that if you know enough of Japanese (working vocabulary) you can read and under stand alot of the Chinese newspaper. This due to the Kanji usage. Sure the Chinese pronounce it differently but the symbols and meanings read the same concert wise. Just random interesting points I find....

These RPG games (Share/Free ware) are okay to get better grips on Kanji.

It's almost September guys...

Anyway, I can understand why Kojima didn't make an English release.

Hopefully he'll look at this translation patch and that can give him some kind of redemption and thankfulness.

I definitly believe big things will come out of this. Just do it soon!!! ARGH.

Hahaha, don't rush them. They said late 2007 and, with the summer season coming to a close, we're getting into "mid-to-late" territory. Therefore, there's still time, and we want the patches to be perfect.

We continue to give the team our support.

To be honest, I'm waiting for December 31st. If this comes out any time before that, I consider that a bonus. (and a very welcome one at that, since MGS4, GTA4 and SSBB have all slipped to 2008 in Europe)

Ha! Already finished huh?

Okay... I understand if you have to play the game a couple times through to make sure it's alright (it took me 3 partial days to finish it my first try without a faq excluding the bomb disposal and employee code guide)

When it comes to perfection, I'm patient.

But try to release it earlier than Christmas... please?

On average, games are released in November. ;)

Go for it!

Good job again.

I can assure you we're not just sitting around playing it and having a laugh about it. The simple fact is it isn't finished yet. We'll make an announcement when there's something to announce.

The sheer technical nightmare it is to reverse engineer this game without the source code is one of the biggest reasons a fan translation has never been done before... it took quite a while to extract the text alone... it is coming and it will be worth it.

Yes I am helping beta test the game when that time comes... Marc and I have been good friends since the petition back in 2000, so I was kind of brought on board because of that... and no worries I didn't take offense to the comment. In all seriousness though it is a lot of work and rest assured all those involved are truly giving it their best, and the end result will be worth it, that I can assure you!

Oh, I know it'll be worth it. The game was awesome up until the point I had played it (near the end of Act 2). I'm very much looking forward to it.

And I know about your past endeavours, with the petition and all. Tis a shame and all that all of the movements to get the game released over here went nowhere, but it was trying right?

But yeah, I can wait. Being a Shenmue fan and all, I'm grateful that anything is coming at all! :)

Okay! I now know you're not goofing off.

I'm a patient man for perfection.

I believe you when you say it must be hard.

You're doing everyone a favor by translating this, so we thankyou for the time spent.

Thanks for the comments... although for clarification I have done none of the hacking or translating for the team... I kind of serve as moral support, and an expert beta tester when the time comes! But believe me when I say that the folks that have been involved from the get go want this done, and done right, just as bad, if not more so, than everyone else... including myself. I personally can't wait to play it in English from start to finish... that is something I have wanted for longer than I think I can possibly express.

I wouldn't even know where to begin with a translation, I can't even understand any programming language, let alone Japanese. I've been watching trailers of Policenauts, and while I obviously can't understand the words, the gameplay and imagery has me appealed. Did a bit of reading up on the synopsis on Wikipedia too, and I must say, I'm really looking forward to being able to play it.

Naturally, you've got my full support with this. :)

lol, I love this song... The 1st OP from the 2nd City Hunter series. "At first, I loved his voice, then his back and perfect fingers..."
That's kindof ironic actually, as Hideyuki Tanaka voices Hideyuki Makimura, the main character's support in the first 5 episodes. I should randomly note as well that I fucking love that show.
As well, he kinda looks like Mr. Tanaka lol;

It's been a while since I checked on things here.

How are things going in JunkerHQ land?

Hahaha, sorry Shidoni - Every once in a while I get a surge of "creativity." I've got another image (which I made from a shot of Metal Gear 2 [NES]) around here somewhere.

Very true. Even throughout the production of the patches, Konami has not revealed any plans to re-release Snatcher or Policenauts in any way. So, like Seiken Densetsu 3, all opportunities to translate the game officially have been ignored. I've put a lot of faith in the JunkerHQ team, and I can't wait to see the result of their hard work. In the meantime, I'll try and keep the discussion in this topic going - It's been too quiet lately.

At the same time, I can't wait to see how the patches are received - Will it get the game media's attention? Will Policenauts bittorrent downloads* and eBay auctions skyrocket? Will these events gain the attention of Konami or even Kojima himself? I'm interested to see how the video game world is changed by the developments of this very site.

* Shame on you, thief!
