snatcher1988:
You know there is a 'spoiler' button that you can use to hide spoilers so people don't see em, its along the top row of buttons right next to the 'bold' one.

I'm bad at making spoilers. Everytime I try to do them, they end up looking something like this:
See what I mean?

Your quote of him works, his original statement doesn't. Very odd.

Thanks, Charlie. I just went back, found out the problem, and re-edited my post.

Something tells me that I should try to avoid this area of the forums, least until the fan translation is complete. =P
Don't want to stumble upon any spoilers.

You know, I've been avoiding the other topics in this section of the forum to avoid spoilers. I'm pretty thankful I didn't see the post that started this particular conversation, but that means I have to follow your route, Synthoid.
I guess I'll do the same, but, at the same time, I want to know exactly when the patch will be out. So, I'm a bit conflicted - I don't want to wait a second longer than I have to!
I guess you'll see me in the other sections from now on. Will the E-Mail Subscribers from Policenauts.net at least get immediate notice?

Look, I apologize if I angered any of you guys just recently. I just didn't know any better until now. I promise I will never make the same mistake again.

No apologies necessary, friend.

Yeah, don't worry about it - We're all just edgy as we get closer to "late 2007." We invested a good amount to import copies of the game (Especially those that are acquiring copies now, when demand is rising and there aren't enough PlayStation versions reaching eBay.), and we've invested just as much of our time in checking up on the progress of the patches. So, we tend to get agitated quickly, especially since information has been scarce for a while now.
Now that I think about it, maybe a "NO SPOILERS" warning on the topic title would prevent similar incidents.

I think at this point, it'd be pretty hard to spoil the game, aside from what can be gathered from the visual aspect. Not may of us have any idea of what's going on, which could only lead to fake spoilers, such as "OMG, Tony is Johnathan's Father!" I don't think that there's much to worry about right now.

Actually, that's not the case for a good number of us - Like I've said on other occasions, many of us have simply secured our copy, and are waiting for the patch before playing the game. (Have any of you tried to play Seiken Densetsu 3 without English text?)
Spoilers, fake or real, should be avoided. (Even the fake ones can give certain aspects of the game away.)
It's best to use this topic for it's intended purpose: Provide patch updates whenever they become available.

Indeed a mail will be immediately sent out when the thing is ready to all the mails subscribed to Policenouts.net.
Thanks a lot for the support, knowing that there is interest and by fellow lovers of the genre is one of the factors that pushes us forward. Believe me that we'd love to get this out as soon as possible, just as you guys. We ain't holding anything or creating expectation. We are being as honest as we can be with you guys.

Hey, Snatcher - Haven't seen you in a while! (Which is probably my fault for sticking to this one topic for so long.)
I'm glad you appreciate the support - As annoying as we can be at times, we truly love the genre as well as obscure, high-quality gaming. For most of us, Snatcher grabbed our interest, and this website has given us a place to convene and discuss how awesome the experience was. Due to the patches project, we finally have something new to be excited about - An awesome game that has been lost to US and European gamers for almost a decade! For this, we truly appreciate the efforts of you and your team.
It's so rare to find a game like Snatcher, and those of us that really loved it were saddened by the events that kept Policenauts from leaving Japan. Needless to say, the patches give us hope and anticipation, and, indeed, waiting for the patches has been part of the fun. (Keeping away from spoilers is always the hardest part, though.)
If it's not out of line, Snatcher, can I ask if things are still on schedule? If it's too much information, don't worry about replying; I simply can't control myself when it comes to patch information.

How bad is pricing? I magically got a copy via usenet when some guy living between Hawaii and Japan read my inquiries and snagged this and and Snatcher for PSX. $32 shipped back in err... early 1999.
I did finish the game somehow with minimal moonspeak knowledge and that old FAQ for the scene in that I think is a purse store or something equally silly.
PS: Yea, long-time lurker.

The bottom line is that while we said our goal was to get it out in '07 (and it is), in reality it'll be done when it's done. Commercial games slip dates from time to time as well, and those people are working full-time for a paycheck for whatever they're doing. So please just be patient with us. I know it's hard waiting, but we're nearing the finish line now, when you consider the project started over 5 years ago.

A new newsletter on the current status would be nice
I like how the translators for "Mother 3" have a blog to keep everyone informed on the current status. I understand that there is a tremondous amount of work involved in hacking this project, but it would be nice to get more updates on the situation, even if its just a bit. You're always going to have to put up with people begging for a release date and such, so I believe having an update every now and then will help cool the flames a bit. People like to know that projects are still active.
Anyway, this is just a suggestion since I can't remember the last time i got a newsletter from you guys. Either way, translating a game like Policenauts is a huge accomplishment in itself, and i commend you guys for it.

The current status is that our programmer is still working on the last big hurdle of the project, which is making sure the in-game text all fits. The problem is that the English text files are larger than the original Japanese, taking up more memory than the original code allows for. So, he needs to find a way around this by using other areas of memory to display the text that doesn't fit in the original location. The nature of the work is such that one day there will be a breakthrough and everything will fall into place from there. He tries A and that doesn't work, so then he tries B. If B doesn't work, he tries C, and so on. But eventually, one method will work.
So to go over it again:
The translation is done.
The text implementation in the cut-scenes is done.
He's working on this last part all by himself; we put out a request for anyone with ASM knowledge who wanted to help, but there were no takers. So please, just have patience while he finishes this part.
Once that's done, we just have to implement some minor redone graphics (mainly changing "Hojyo" to "Hojo" in various places) and English end credits, beta test it, make any necessary readjustments to the text, then we're good to go.
The reason we announced it way ahead of its release, when we weren't completely sure of a date, was:
1) To give fans some anticipation time. Am I wrong in thinking people like the chance to look forward to projects like these?
but more importantly
2) To give Konami a chance to ask us to stop if that was their choice.
We originally just considered releasing it out of the blue one day when it was done, but after some consideration, we decided this wasn't right (mainly for (2)).
We know that we would never just give up and drop the project, but I realize now that not everyone will be aware of this, so we'll send out a newsletter to let everyone know.

Just replace the opening credit music with the theme from Escape from New York and you're set.

I can imagine the end credits is going to be a bitch and a half, that'll be a lot of scrolling text to do!
And I don't really mind when this comes. Whoever is trying that method you just mentioned, really deserves a pay cheque, since first and foremost, that will be the most tedious job to do when you're not being paid for and two, they deserve a job over at Konami for all the work put into it. Sounds like a pain, jeez. Not that I'm saying the rest of you aren't had a hard time, either or anything, heh.

I think if Konami was going to do anything, they would have done so already. Unless they're waiting for the project to be finished, so they can snatch it away then...that would suck.
