A different 360 rumor

It's a load of shit, though!
Kotaku wrote:: A press conference in Osaka today revealed that Konami has established a development team called "Konami X Productions." The team is being headed by MGS creator Hideo Kojima. Frist, Konami X Prods. will develop the Metal Gear Solid trilogy for the Xbox 360 and MGS: Fluid Ac!d for the Zune.
The Smash: Kojima might be from Kansai, but Konami, a Tokyo-based company, does not give press conferences in Osaka. Also, news of such press conference never appeared on Konami's or Kojima Productions' sites or on any major Japanese gaming news website like Famitsu, Game Watch Impress or Dengeki Online. A well-placed source confirmed with us that this rumor is total baloney.

It's safe to assume that Konami wouldn't have messed up on the spelling of one of their upcoming games if it was genuine (check the "press release" on the link). I don't think they want to advertise MGS as a trilogy (or a "triology") when they're currently promoting the fourth one, either. And there's also the little matter of Kojima constantly telling the press that MGS4 is making him so busy that he can't work on anything else, until it's finished.

All I can say about this is, it was a good read...for a laugh.

Not a peep on the Japanese website. Utter nonsense. Who starts these things anyway? Bitter fanboys?

You answered your own question, there.

Do you think Kojima will bring anything to 360? A lot of rumours point to MGS4 on 360, but for me it is the differences in the controller, rather than any real difference in power (there really isn't much) that'd stop that happening.

Well, Kojima has very little history with the XBox series, the 360's controller is most traditional controller on a next-gen console, and Kojima believes the 360 to be less powerful than the PS3. Unless he was asked to make a game for the 360 (either from Microsoft, or someone in the industry who he highly respected), I doubt he'd feel any need to.

Didn't he appear at a Microsoft conference not so long ago? Strange, I know, but he reportedly did turn up, the reason is still unknown...

Wasn't he just sitting in the audience?

I think so. Maybe he wanted to find out more about the machine, see if it took his fancy for the future?

I've been following his comments on the 360 really closely because I'm praying nightly MGS4 goes to 360, and I think it's definitely going to happen.
A: Kojima's always been diplomatic. Metal Gears for Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, Policenauts on the friggin 3DO & more, Snatcher w/ multiple ports. He didn't DIRECT each of these projects, but had a hand in most at least.
B: Kojima's interviews say he doesn't see a technology difference btw Playstation 3 and the 360, and he specifically said "technically MGS4 could run" on the 360. GamePro (ugh) just interviewed him and there's a lot of lukewarm-to-negative feelings about Sony in there. He said he doesn't even care about HD itself, surprisingly.
C: Many companies are concerned about the cost of game development, and MGS4 is definitely one of the costliest projects. A port to a console with an American, established userbase would be good business for Metal Gear. A lot of Eastern AND Western Playstation "exclusives" are coming to 360 now, just usually later (VF, VT, Assassin's Creed, GTA, etc.)
Another rumor which you might have seen saw reported was someone with Konami of Japan saying it's 100% happening. But don't take that as gospel yet

I don't think Kojima would do it. He's too excited about his other projects. He might outsource it, but I find it hard to get excited about outsourced ports.

If it's a good outsourced port, though...

The thing is, MGS4's designed so specifically for the PS3 that hoping an outsourced port to another console is being so optomistic it's almost naive.

Can't help but hope though.

Meh, MGS2 was designed pretty specifically for the Playstation 2's goofy hardware, and they ported fine (besides that damn rain). To a more "powerful" system though.
And I know Kojima said it could technically run on the 360, I should find that interview -- he said he doesn't see a big difference btw the hardware, that it's just public perception that Sony is way more powerful. I think it'll take a number of years before the Playstation 3 can outdistance the 360 graphically in a noticeable manner consistently, if it happens at all.
I think if games like VF5 or Assassin's Creed can be played on different architecture OK, Konami'll manage. I'll take a port, even if it was slightly downgraded -- MGS4 was the only game I want for the platform, so I'll be happy to save the dough.

I wouldn't call it fine at all. Ever try playing the FPS missions on the XBox? (...ugh)

Bleh, well the main game itself was intact on Xbox, right? I never even finished Snake Tales on either system (I bought both Substances, for pretty much no reason).
I'm not a developer or anything obviously, I could be wrong about the how easy it would be to port, but that's the conclusion I've gleaned from reading devs talk about both systems. Plus Konami would like the dollars, right, so I think trying would totally be worth it to them. That game must be costing KoJ like 1,000,000 space bucks a day.

If you change the controls you can make it very playable.

I REALLY hope MGS4 doesn't go to the 360. I seem to remember Kojima telling Game Informer that, for him MGS would always be a Playstation series. Although the games have been ported to other systems, he said he believed the Playstation is where they really belong. (I could be wrong about this one though.)
edit: I checked that issue of GI. He did say that.

Regardless of what happens the PS3 version will be the best version, since it was originally designed for it.

Well, Policenauts was originally designed for the PC-98, but is that version really the best one? Personally, I prefer the Saturn version.
But yeah, a straight port would probably be inferior. The 360 has the capacity to enhance somewhat if ported properly though due to a superior GPU.

You can't compare a PC-98 to a Saturn. They're not even close. The first PC-98s appeared in the early 80s!

You're talking a difference in generation there, which doesn't apply in this case. They had time and far more advanced hardware to upgrade Policenauts. It's also in a much simpler format (2D stills over a full 3D world). There's also the fact that Policenauts was a labor of love for the team where they wanted to port it to make the game better. In this case it would just be for financial reasons. I'd imagine a 360 port would turn out like Xbox Substance. Just my feeling.

I agree with Osiris. The Saturn version of Policenauts was closer to a remake than a port, due to the leap in technology. The 360 and the PS3 are in the same technological generation, though. It would be much harder to make an accurate port on a console of the same technological standard (unless they work the same way) than on a console of a much higher standard.
