Fighting Psycho Mantis with Controller #1?

I'm trying to play through MGS: Integral on my PSP (with Dark Alex's firmware 3.03 oe-c, which runs amazingly!). I've just got up to Psycho Mantis though, and I've realised that I've never tried fighting him with the controller in the first slot, before. You can't configure which slot you're in on the PSP's emulation software, either.

Does anyone have any tips for beating Mantis with the controller in the first slot? I've barely been able to deal damage on him, so far.

Oh, and if anyone wants, I can make a full guide on how to play PSone games on the PSP without illegally downloading the games.

I think if you get killed a couple of times, you can then destroy the statues in the corners of the room by shooting them. Those will reduce his power and you should then be able to beat him.

Yep, that's right. You have to call Campbell though, until he tells you, that you have to change the controller port. If you get killed after that, then you can destroy the statues, it has the same effect as if you change the controller port. And if you call Campbell after that, he and Naomi even explain the meaning of those statues and why it disturbes Psycho Mantis mind control power.

I'll try that, thanks! I do have a couple of concerns about playing the rest of the game on my PSP, though. I'm pretty sure that I'll break the thing if I don't submit to the torture!

I can also tell you that you can beat him dealing small blows at a time and with lotsof patience. A friend on mine gave us a Japanese copy when it was just out, and another friend of mine finished the game without an ounce of Japanese. When he saw how Mantis was defeated later in the US version, he was pissed at how much work he put into that fight =)

The detail on the battle is so fantastic, I just love it. Did you know that after an hour of surviving fighting Mantis, if you shoot at him with your FAMAS, then he can get shot, meaning that he is getting tired, the depth placed on this battle, is astronomical for gaming in its generation.

Wow! That's the first I've heard of anything like that. I suppose Kojima planned this to be as long as the fight with The End.
